The accommodation was a wonderful surprise! The staff (Jefri and his wife) were incredibly kind, helpful, and friendly. Breakfast was served on the shared veranda, which had a spectacular view. Our room was right over the water, and all we had to do was step out onto the veranda to see the turtles. The room was spotlessly clean. The facilities are simple but comfortable, and the location is excellent. You only need to walk to the main street to find everything you need, but once you return to the accommodation, it is wonderfully peaceful and quiet. If I ever return to Derawan, I would definitely stay here again — and I think that says it all! Thank you, Jefri!

More about hotels in Kelay

Discover Kelay: Indonesia's Emerging Hub for Adventure and Culture

Indonesia, an archipelago renowned for its diverse landscapes and rich cultural heritage, offers countless destinations that captivate international travellers. Among these, Kelay emerges as a region brimming with potential, presenting a unique blend of natural beauty and burgeoning urban development. For those seeking an authentic Indonesian experience beyond the well-trodden paths, Kelay provides an intriguing gateway to explore the wonders of East Kalimantan. Its appeal lies not just in its proximity to stunning natural attractions but also in its developing infrastructure that caters to a growing number of global visitors.

The region of Kelay is not a monolithic entity; rather, it is a mosaic of distinct areas, each offering a different facet of the Indonesian experience. From the bustling commercial centre of Tanjung Redeb to the tranquil island allure of Maratua and the coastal charm of Derawan, Kelay presents a spectrum of environments. Understanding these variations is key for any international visitor. Choosing to stay in Tanjung Redeb might mean access to more urban amenities and business facilities, while Maratua and Derawan promise a more immersive encounter with marine life and island living. This geographical diversity ensures that travellers can tailor their Kelay adventure to their specific interests, whether they seek adventure, relaxation, or cultural immersion.

For international travellers, particularly those from markets like the United States, Europe, and India, Kelay represents an exceptional value proposition. While specific pricing for the region can fluctuate, the general cost of accommodation and daily expenses often proves more accessible compared to more established tourist hubs in Indonesia or Southeast Asia. This affordability allows for extended stays, deeper exploration of local culture, and the enjoyment of unique experiences without the financial strain. The opportunity to experience a less commercialized side of Indonesia at a favourable exchange rate makes Kelay an attractive option for budget-conscious yet experience-seeking travellers.

Kelay's accommodation landscape mirrors its diverse appeal, offering options that range from basic to more developed facilities. For instance, the presence of establishments like SPBU KELAY - KAB. BERAU, which often serves as a convenient stopover, alongside more established hotels, indicates a developing hospitality sector. Similarly, natural attractions like Mulut Besar Cave hint at the adventure that awaits, and the accommodation options aim to support these explorations. For travellers looking to secure their stay, the ability to easily book hotel rooms in advance through platforms like Traveloka ensures a smooth transition into their Kelay journey.

Ultimately, Kelay is a destination that appeals to a broad spectrum of international travellers. For American and European visitors, it offers a chance to discover a less-explored part of Indonesia, providing opportunities for adventure, nature exploration, and cultural engagement. Indian travellers may find Kelay particularly appealing due to its potential for affordable travel, diverse culinary experiences, and the ease of access through regional flight connections. While direct comparisons for African travellers might be less common, the universal draw of natural beauty, unique cultural encounters, and value for money makes Kelay a compelling choice for anyone looking to experience Indonesia beyond the typical tourist trail.

Best Areas to Stay in Kelay

Kelay, a region within Indonesia's vast archipelago, offers a diverse range of experiences, and choosing the right neighbourhood to base yourself in is crucial for an enriching visit. From the urban conveniences of Tanjung Redeb to the island paradises of Maratua and Derawan, each area presents a distinct atmosphere and set of attractions. Understanding these differences will help international travellers tailor their trip to their preferences, whether they prioritize adventure, relaxation, or cultural immersion, ensuring a more personalized and satisfying stay in this captivating Indonesian locale.

Tanjung Redeb

For international travellers, this area provides a practical base with access to essential services, transportation hubs, and a glimpse into local Indonesian life beyond the typical tourist resorts. It's particularly well-suited for business travellers or those who prefer to have amenities like banks, markets, and a variety of dining options readily available. The vibe here is one of a working town, with a friendly local population eager to share their culture.

From Tanjung Redeb, travellers can easily arrange excursions to the region's famed natural sites. The area itself boasts local markets and culinary spots where one can sample authentic Indonesian cuisine. Getting to Tanjung Redeb is straightforward, as it is served by the nearest airport, making it a convenient entry point for exploring the wider Kelay region. For those looking to explore beyond the town, numerous opportunities exist to book attractions and tours that showcase the natural beauty of Berau.

Maratua

Maratua is an island destination that embodies the classic tropical escape, renowned for its pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant marine life. For international visitors, especially those from Western countries or India seeking a tranquil retreat, Maratua offers an unparalleled opportunity to disconnect and immerse themselves in nature's splendor. The atmosphere is one of serene seclusion, with luxurious resorts and charming guesthouses dotting the coastline, providing a peaceful counterpoint to the bustling mainland.

This island is a diver's and snorkeler's dream, with numerous dive sites and coral reefs teeming with biodiversity. Accommodation here ranges from high-end resorts to more intimate guesthouses, catering to various budgets. While Maratua is more remote, access is typically via boat transfers from Tanjung Redeb or other coastal points, adding to its exclusive feel. The journey itself is part of the adventure, offering stunning ocean views and a true sense of arrival in a secluded destination.

Derawan

Derawan Island offers a more laid-back, yet equally captivating, island experience, known for its relaxed atmosphere and accessibility to incredible underwater adventures. It serves as a popular hub for divers and nature enthusiasts, attracting travellers who appreciate a slightly more rustic charm compared to the more developed resorts of Maratua. The island's appeal lies in its genuine local feel, where visitors can interact with the community and experience a simpler way of island life, making it a favourite for backpackers and seasoned travellers alike.

The primary draw of Derawan is its proximity to world-class diving and snorkeling spots, including the famous Derawan Marine Park, known for its sea turtles and manta rays. While accommodation options are more modest than on Maratua, they offer comfortable stays that allow easy access to the water. Reaching Derawan typically involves a boat trip from Tanjung Redeb, a journey that provides scenic coastal views and builds anticipation for the aquatic wonders that await exploration.

Pulau Kakaban

Pulau Kakaban, a unique island within the Derawan archipelago, offers a truly extraordinary natural phenomenon: a large, inland jellyfish lake where stingless jellyfish thrive. This destination is a must-see for adventurous travellers and nature lovers, particularly those from North America and Europe who are drawn to unique ecological wonders. The island's atmosphere is one of natural marvel and quiet exploration, providing a stark contrast to the typical beach resort experience and offering a profound connection with nature.

The main attraction on Kakaban is undoubtedly the opportunity to swim and snorkel amongst millions of stingless jellyfish, a rare and memorable experience. While there are no permanent accommodations on Kakaban itself, it is easily accessible as a day trip from Derawan or Maratua. Boat tours can be arranged from these islands, allowing visitors to spend several hours exploring the lake and the island's lush interior before returning to their base accommodation.

Navigating dining etiquette in Kelay is generally straightforward for international visitors. Tipping is not customary in most local eateries, though rounding up the bill or leaving a small amount for exceptional service is appreciated. Navigating Kelay: Cultural Nuances and Essential Safety Tips

Understanding local customs and etiquette is paramount for any international traveller aiming for a respectful and smooth journey in Kelay. Indonesian culture, while diverse, generally emphasizes politeness, respect for elders, and a harmonious social interaction. Visitors from the US, Europe, and India will find that while many customs are familiar, there are subtle differences in social interactions, particularly regarding personal space and directness in communication, which are important to be mindful of to avoid misunderstandings.

When visiting Kelay, particularly its religious sites or more traditional communities, dressing modestly is advisable. This typically means covering shoulders and knees. When entering homes or places of worship, it is customary to remove your shoes. Photography of people should always be done with permission. While queueing is generally observed, patience is a virtue, and understanding that schedules might be more fluid than in Western countries can help manage expectations and ensure a more relaxed experience.

Safety in Kelay is generally good, with petty crime being relatively low, especially outside of major urban centres. However, as with any travel destination, it is wise to take precautions. Keep valuables secure, be aware of your surroundings, and use reputable transportation services. Ride-hailing apps like Grab are available and offer a convenient and transparent way to get around. For navigation, offline map applications can be invaluable, especially in areas with limited mobile data connectivity.

In case of emergencies, local police and ambulance services are available. For Filipino travellers, it is always advisable to know the contact details of the nearest Philippine Embassy or Consulate in Indonesia, which can provide assistance in various situations. Carrying travel insurance is highly recommended to cover any unforeseen medical expenses or emergencies. Staying informed about any travel advisories issued by the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) before your trip is also a prudent step for ensuring a safe and secure journey.

The best time to visit Kelay generally aligns with the dry season, which typically runs from April to October. During these months, you can expect less rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor activities, island hopping, and exploring the natural attractions. While this period might see slightly higher hotel prices due to peak tourist seasons, it offers the most pleasant weather conditions. Travellers from the US, Europe, and India should note that these months often coincide with their own holiday periods, so booking well in advance is advisable.

Before embarking on your trip to Kelay, a few pre-departure preparations will ensure a smoother experience. The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR), and while major credit cards are accepted in larger hotels and establishments, carrying some cash is essential for smaller vendors and local markets. SIM cards with data plans can be purchased at the airport upon arrival. Essential apps to download include offline maps, a translation app, and ride-hailing applications. Ensure your passport has at least six months of validity remaining from your date of entry into Indonesia.

Visa Requirements for Entering Indonesia to Visit Kelay

For Philippine passport holders planning to visit Kelay, understanding the visa requirements for entering Indonesia is crucial. As of current regulations, Filipino citizens are generally granted visa-free entry into Indonesia for short stays, typically up to 30 days, for tourism purposes. This allows for a convenient and straightforward entry process, eliminating the need for a pre-arranged visa for most tourist visits. It is always recommended to confirm the latest visa policies with official Indonesian immigration sources before your travel dates.

The visa-free entry for Philippine passport holders usually requires a valid passport with at least six months of remaining validity from the date of arrival in Indonesia. Travellers may also be asked to present proof of onward travel, such as a return or onward flight ticket, and sometimes proof of sufficient funds to cover their stay. While no visa fee is associated with this visa-free entry, any extensions or stays beyond the permitted period would require a formal visa application process.

While visa-free entry simplifies the process, it is always prudent for travellers to verify the most up-to-date information regarding entry requirements directly with the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in the Philippines or the Directorate General of Immigration of Indonesia. Policies can change, and confirming your specific entry status and any required documentation before booking flights or making non-refundable arrangements is a vital step to ensure a seamless travel experience to Kelay and other parts of Indonesia.
