This was my first time staying at a Ketapang hotel, namely the Nevada Hotel. The room was spacious, with pillows and bolsters, making it feel like sleeping at home. The blankets were comfortable and thick, the hot water worked well, and it was very clean. The breakfast was varied, but what was impressive was the unique Malay food. The chef and staff were also friendly, and the facilities included a gym and a delicious restaurant, allowing for a relaxing coffee. The receptionist was also friendly and immediately responded to our needs. Check-in and check-out were quick and easy. Overall, I highly recommend staying at the Nevada Hotel if you're in Ketapang.

This is my husband and my first experience staying at the fave hotel Ketapang, incidentally its location inside the mall, making it easier for us to access the mall without having to get far away from the hotel. The room is clean and fragrant, even the toilet. It's a pleasure to stay at a hotel that cares about the environment like this, not only bamboo toothber brush, They even put adrinking in every room instead of plastic bottles, Don't worry they also provide several water dispensers outside the room to refill our too. less plastic less worry, good job fave hotel!

What to Eat and Where to Find It in Singkup

Singkup, located within the culinary landscape of Indonesia, offers a delightful array of flavours that reflect the nation's rich gastronomic heritage. While specific regional specialties might vary, the broader Indonesian influence means you can expect dishes rich in spices, fresh ingredients, and diverse cooking techniques. From aromatic rice dishes to flavourful satays and hearty soups, Singkup provides a palate-pleasing journey for any food enthusiast. Exploring the local eateries and markets is an essential part of experiencing the authentic culture of this Indonesian region.

For travellers seeking authentic local flavours, exploring the neighbourhood markets and smaller eateries in areas like Delta Pawan or Jelai Hulu is highly recommended. These spots often serve traditional dishes prepared with generations-old recipes. For Muslim travellers, Indonesia is predominantly a Muslim country, and finding Halal-certified food is generally straightforward. Most local restaurants and warungs will serve Halal dishes, and it's always polite to inquire if unsure, though explicit Halal certification is common and widely understood.

The cost of dining in Singkup offers excellent value for international visitors. Street food and local warungs can provide delicious meals for as little as ₱50-₱100 (approximately $1-2 USD). Mid-range restaurants offering a more comfortable dining experience typically range from ₱200-₱400 (approximately $4-8 USD) per person for a full meal. Even more upscale dining experiences remain affordable compared to Western standards, often costing around ₱600-₱1000 (approximately $12-20 USD) per person, making Singkup an accessible destination for culinary exploration for travellers from the US, Europe, and India.

When dining in Singkup, embracing local customs enhances the experience. Meals are often communal, and it's polite to wait for elders or hosts to begin eating. Tipping is not always customary in smaller establishments but is appreciated in more formal restaurants, typically around 5-10% of the bill. Ordering might involve pointing at dishes in local eateries or communicating with staff in slightly more formal settings. Familiarizing yourself with basic Indonesian phrases for ordering food can also be very helpful and is often met with warm appreciation from locals.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Singkup

Understanding local customs is key to a respectful and enjoyable visit to Singkup. Indonesians are generally known for their politeness and hospitality. When interacting with locals, a gentle demeanour and a smile go a long way. It's customary to use your right hand for giving and receiving items, as the left hand is sometimes considered unclean. Showing respect for elders and religious practices is paramount; always dress modestly when visiting religious sites or more conservative areas within Singkup.

When visiting Singkup, particularly its cultural sites or places of worship, adhering to appropriate dress codes is essential. This typically means covering shoulders and knees. In many local settings, particularly outside of major tourist hubs, it's advisable to ask permission before taking photographs of people. Queue culture is generally relaxed, but patience and politeness are appreciated. Being mindful of these social cues will ensure smoother interactions and a more positive experience for you and the local community.

For practical safety in Singkup, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets or transport hubs. While generally safe, petty theft can occur, so keeping valuables secure and out of sight is recommended. For transportation, ride-hailing apps like Grab are widely available and offer a convenient and relatively safe way to get around. Familiarizing yourself with the local currency and having small denominations handy for smaller purchases can also be useful.

In case of emergencies in Singkup, local police and ambulance services are available. It is advisable to have the contact numbers readily accessible. For Filipino travellers, knowing the contact details for the Philippine Embassy or Consulate in Indonesia is crucial for any consular assistance needed. Additionally, considering travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and unforeseen events is a prudent step for all international visitors, ensuring peace of mind throughout your journey.

Getting to Singkup and Getting Around

Reaching Singkup from the Philippines is typically a multi-leg journey, as direct flights are uncommon. Travellers from Manila (NAIA/MNL), Cebu (CEB), or other Philippine hubs will likely need to connect through major international airports in Southeast Asia, such as Kuala Lumpur or Singapore, before flying to the nearest major airport serving Singkup. Flight durations can vary significantly, often ranging from 8 to 15 hours or more, depending on layovers. The estimated cost for a round-trip book flight can range from ₱15,000 to ₱30,000 or more, depending on the season and booking time. The primary gateway airport for Singkup is typically Ketapang Airport (KTG), with transfer times to the city centre varying based on traffic.

Navigating within Singkup offers a variety of options to suit different preferences and budgets. Local buses and minivans (angkot) are the most economical way to travel between different parts of the region, though they can be crowded and follow fixed routes. Taxis and ride-hailing services like Grab are readily available, especially in more developed areas like Delta Pawan, offering a more comfortable and direct mode of transport. For shorter distances, motorcycle taxis (ojek) are a quick and efficient option. Prices for taxis and ride-hailing services are generally affordable, with short trips costing around ₱50-₱150 (approximately $1-3 USD).

The best time to visit Singkup generally aligns with Indonesia's dry season, which typically runs from May to September. During these months, the weather is usually sunny and pleasant, with lower humidity, making it ideal for outdoor exploration and sightseeing. This period also coincides with peak tourist seasons in many parts of Indonesia, so expect slightly higher hotel prices and more crowds. For travellers seeking a quieter experience and potentially lower rates, the shoulder months of April and October can offer a good balance of favourable weather and fewer tourists.

Before embarking on your trip to Singkup, a pre-departure checklist is essential. Ensure you have sufficient Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) for initial expenses, though major hotels and some shops may accept credit cards. Purchasing a local SIM card upon arrival at the airport is recommended for easy data access and communication. Essential apps to download include offline maps (like Google Maps or Maps.me), a translation app, and the Grab app for transportation. Beyond your passport, ensure you have copies of important documents and any necessary travel insurance details.

Visa Information

For Philippine passport holders planning to visit Singkup, which is located in Indonesia, understanding the visa requirements is crucial. As of current regulations, Philippine citizens are generally granted visa-free entry into Indonesia for short stays, typically up to 30 days, for tourism or business purposes. This allows for a convenient entry without the need for pre-application at an embassy or consulate. However, it is always recommended to verify the latest visa policies with official Indonesian immigration sources before your travel dates, as regulations can change.

The visa-free entry for Philippine passport holders usually requires that your passport be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay and that you possess a confirmed onward or return ticket. While no visa fee is associated with this visa-free facility, travellers should be prepared to present proof of sufficient funds to cover their stay if requested by immigration officials. The duration of stay granted is at the discretion of the immigration officer upon arrival.
