What Guests Say About Their Stay

Margaret

/ 10
Staying here is an extraordinary experience, stepping back in time to a ryokan as it was in the 1950s (and almost as it was in 1920). The hospitality is exceptional, the staff attentive and capable, and the room spacious and evocative of an earlier era. Visitors must realize that this means very little in modern conveniences: some rooms don’t have showers and all the rooms are Japanese style with tatami floors and futon beds (set out during dinner and removed during breakfast). There are many stairs, no elevator, and the outdoor shared baths are quite a walk through the (marvelous) garden. The meals are extravagant but totally Japanese. It is an experience not to be missed, but you need to know what you are getting. (The Imperial family apparently stayed here in 1955, the first time the Emperor had ever stayed outside the royal compound.) There many wonderful indoor and outdoor museums around the area, and several fantastic gardens.

Incredibly attentive staff and a beautiful location. It feels like a hidden gem, and like you were transported into another world. It was such a stark contrast from Tokyo and was a real breath of fresh air. The food was excellent, the room was incredibly comfortable, and the outdoor hot spring was just delightful. This is also one of the few ryokans that is tattoo friendly, which was a big place for us.

The Good: Location - This is right next to the Gora train station and Cable Car. Excellent location. Walking distance from the open-air museum. Staff - The staff are helpful and want to help. The Bad: Dated - The property is SEVERELY dated. The bathrooms are old and moldy. Bathrooms - The shower area in our room was where the private onsen was which was VERY small and gross. This room has zero ventilation and 100% humidity because of the hot spring tub. So humid that the bathroom is ALWAYS wet, the ceilings are covered in droplets of water which drip on you. Cold drops of water on you while you shower or are in the onsen are very unpleasant. Also, there is visible mold on the ceilings and walls. The shower fixtures are old and crappy. Amenities - If I'm paying over $1000 per night, please give me more than one towel to be used for Onsen, shower, everything. Please also give me more than 1 tiny pillow to sleep on. Please give me more than 1 pitcher of drinking water for the day for 3 people. The Onsen - The open air Onsen is tiny, four people and it's full. Food - The Kiseki meal was good but drinks were not included. Again, I paid $1000 per night. Pricing - This place is SEVERELY overpriced for what it is. Verdict: I would not stay here again, especially for the price. Avoid this place.

The staff of Gora Kansuiro is a highlight of this ryokan. Everyone showed above and beyond hospitality, from the moment we even stepped into the parking lot! The location, tucked in the green woods with gardens and walking paths surrounding it, is perfect - just a short walk from Gora station (also note: the switchback train up the mountain to Gora station is a wonderful unique experience all on its own). We loved the expansive Sakura room up some stairs, with its beautiful sun porch looking out to the woods and ridgeline, and its private constant-recirc hot springs tub room. Every night the staff made up the futons for us while we feasted kanseki-style in the dining room (so. much. food. - unique all around, and some very tasty things though of course not every single dish/morsel is to everyone’s taste). Not very used to floor-sleeping anymore, so I did find that I needed some extra padding on my futon to get thru the night ok, and not have sore joints in the morning. Overall, Gora Konsuiro was comfortable and so memorable - we loved the sense of deep tradition and history throughout.

This is an elegant and family oriented place. Everyone is so professional and attentive. The vibe is kind and relaxed. The food is delicious and the amenities are incredible. This Ryokan is beautiful. I suggest you get the big room with its own Onsen. It’s totally worth it. And if you have tattoos they are totally fine with it. Excellent experience.

An Unforgettable Stay Defined by Grace, Care, and Thoughtful Hospitality Our stay at Gora Kansuiro was truly exceptional and deeply memorable. From the moment we arrived, we were met with genuine warmth and attentiveness that made us feel not like guests, but like we were being welcomed into something sacred and intentional. The hospitality was generous in every sense, but what stood out most was the extraordinary care given to our meals. Each dish felt thoughtfully curated, beautifully presented, and prepared with such sensitivity and precision. The staff went above and beyond to accommodate us, making the dining experience feel deeply personal rather than routine. It was clear that great pride is taken not only in the food itself, but in how it is shared. The ryokan itself is serene, elegant, and grounding. Every detail, from the tatami rooms to the onsen experience, invites you to slow down, be present, and fully absorb the calm of Hakone. The balance of tradition, comfort, and quiet refinement is impeccable. What we will remember most is the kindness—the feeling that every interaction was sincere, unhurried, and rooted in care. Gora Kansuiro is not just a place to stay; it is an experience of Japanese hospitality at its finest. We are deeply grateful and hope to return one day.

I stayed 2 nights at Gora Kansuiro as a solo traveler, in July and I absolutely loved my stay! The staff were very friendly and professional. I even got to practice my broken japanese with some of them. The ryoukan is very traditional, which is the charm, and entire reason i loved it so much. It might not be for you if you have bad knees or back, as sitting on tatami mats an sleeping on futons could be uncomfortable for you, just something to consider. My room «Sakura» had a view of the gardens, and a private onsen bath. I had a dip in my private onsen bath every time I got home from sightseeing, and in the evenings before going to bed, and it really rejuvenates you. Also, I was allowed in public bath with my two full tattoo sleeves, which was a refreshing change from everywhere else i have been so far! The outdoor bath is highly recommended in the late evening when it is dark outside. Both dinner and breakfast were traditional japanese cuisine. Everything was delicious, and the Wagyu was maybe the best thing I have tasted in my entire life. The gardens are absolutely stunning, and I highly recommend taking a stroll in the early morning. The placement is great, near Gora Station and the ropeway. I can not recommend this place enough, and might come back here next time i visit Hakone.

We absolutely loved our stay here. The traditional rooms are lovely. Some bits feel a little dated but it is part of the charm. The staff are fantastic! They were all friendly, welcoming and helpful. The food was unbelievably good. A traditional kaiseki meal every night with exquisite fish that I would never get the opportunity to try elsewhere. We both loved the outdoor onsen. It was really relaxing after a day out and about. The gardens were beautiful too. The place felt like a little piece of calm and relaxation, with the addition of excellent food.

We had the most amazing and elaborate Japanese set dinner and breakfast. Hotel staff were attentive and the garden path was lovely however the property could be better maintained specially given the price charged.
