I stayed 3 nights at the Meritin hotel with a colleague. The check-in process is fast and well served, but what surprised me was the deposit that had to be paid in the amount of 100 ringgit in addition to the 30 ringgit hotel tax for 3 days. In my opinion, this deposit is too big for a 3-star hotel class compared to hotels in its class that I have stayed in in Kuching. Overall the hotel is nice, clean and not far to walk to the waterfront. Located in the Chinatown area of Kuching so it is not difficult to find food around the hotel. The bedroom that I use is a family with double beds and single beds, clean rooms, fast wifi in the room and I can see the city of Kuching. There is one thing that makes me amazed is that there are some big figures posted in the hotel hallway filled with papers of visitor testimonials, this gives a good impression especially for guests. Breakfast at the hotel is pretty complete for a 3-star class and I noticed a quick refill process when there is food running out. My colleague happens to be a smoker and horel provides a restaurant area where guests are allowed to smoke there, this is really fun because the hotel does not provide smoking rooms. I will return to this hotel again if there is an event in Kuching later.

More about hotels in Bau

Discovering Bau: A Malaysian Gem Beyond the Usual Tourist Trail

For the discerning Filipino traveller seeking an authentic Malaysian experience beyond the well-trodden paths of Kuala Lumpur or Penang, Bau presents a compelling alternative. set in the heart of Sarawak, Borneo, Bau offers a unique blend of natural wonders, rich cultural heritage, and a laid-back atmosphere that appeals to those looking for a more immersive journey. Unlike the bustling metropolises, Bau invites exploration of its ancient caves, serene lakes, and vibrant local communities, providing a refreshing contrast to the familiar. This region is a gateway to understanding the diverse tapestry of Malaysian life, particularly the indigenous cultures of Borneo.

Bau's charm lies in its distinct geographical and cultural pockets, each offering a different facet of the region's identity. From the immediate vicinity of Bau town itself, with its local markets and administrative centres, to the more developed urban feel of Kuching City Center, and the burgeoning residential areas of Petra Jaya, the choice of where to base yourself significantly shapes your experience. Exploring these areas reveals a spectrum of activities and atmospheres, from the convenience of city amenities to the tranquility of rural landscapes, ensuring that every traveller can find their niche within this captivating part of Malaysia.

The economic appeal of Bau is undeniable for international visitors, especially when considering the value proposition. With an average starting price of around ₱752.91 per night for accommodations, Bau offers a significantly more budget-friendly experience compared to many other popular tourist destinations in Southeast Asia. This affordability extends to activities and local dining, allowing travellers from the United States, Europe, India, and Africa to stretch their travel budgets further. For instance, exploring natural attractions like the Fairy Caves or enjoying the scenery around Tasik Biru Bau can be done without breaking the bank, making it an attractive option for value-conscious explorers.

The accommodation landscape in Bau, while not as extensive as in major cities, offers a range of options to suit different preferences. From simple guesthouses to more established hotels, travellers can find comfortable stays that cater to their needs. For example, Serikin, a well-known area, provides access to local crafts and a glimpse into daily life. When planning your trip, it's essential to explore these options to find the perfect fit for your itinerary. You can easily book hotel accommodations that align with your budget and desired level of comfort.

Ultimately, Bau is a destination that caters to a diverse range of international travellers. For American and European visitors, it offers a chance to delve into unique cultural experiences and natural beauty, providing a departure from typical Western travel itineraries. Indian travellers will appreciate the affordability, the availability of familiar flavours in local cuisine, and the ease of access from major hubs. While direct connections for African travellers might be less common, the region's appeal lies in its unique cultural immersion and natural landscapes, offering a distinct travel narrative that stands out from more conventional Southeast Asian destinations.

Best Areas to Stay in Bau

Bau, while a relatively compact region, offers a surprising variety of neighbourhoods, each with its own distinct character and appeal for international visitors. Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Bau

Understanding local etiquette is key to a respectful and enjoyable visit to Bau. As in most of Malaysia, politeness and respect for elders and local customs are highly valued. Dress modestly when visiting religious sites or more traditional villages; while beachwear is acceptable at resorts, covering shoulders and knees is advisable in public areas. Greetings are typically warm, with a handshake being common among men, and a nod or slight bow often suffices for women. It's considered polite to accept offers of food or drink, even if you only take a small amount.

When visiting specific landmarks like the Roxy Hotel Siniawan or Badul Homestay, it's important to be mindful of the local environment. While these are tourist-friendly establishments, maintaining a respectful demeanour is always appreciated. Photography is generally permitted, but it's courteous to ask permission before taking pictures of individuals, especially in more rural settings. Queuing culture is present, and patience is appreciated. Avoid public displays of affection, as they are generally frowned upon. Being aware of these nuances will help you navigate social interactions smoothly.

Safety in Bau is generally high, with low crime rates, particularly in the more rural areas. However, as with any travel destination, it's wise to take standard precautions. Keep your valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets or during evening hours. For transportation, ride-hailing apps like Grab are widely available and reliable in Kuching and its surrounding areas, offering a convenient and safe way to get around. Local taxis are also an option, but it's advisable to agree on a fare beforehand or ensure the meter is used.

In case of emergencies, the national emergency number in Malaysia is 999 for police and ambulance services. For Filipino travellers, it's advisable to know the contact details of the Philippine Embassy in Malaysia, located in Kuala Lumpur, for any consular assistance. While Bau is generally safe, having travel insurance is always recommended to cover unforeseen medical expenses or emergencies. Staying informed about any advisories from the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) before your trip is also a prudent step for ensuring a safe and well-prepared journey.

Getting to Bau and Getting Around

Reaching Bau from the Philippines is a straightforward journey, primarily involving flights into Kuching International Airport (KCH), which serves as the main gateway to the region. Direct flights from Manila (MNL) to KCH are not common, so most travellers will transit through Kuala Lumpur (KUL) or other regional hubs. A typical journey from Manila might involve a flight to KUL, followed by a connecting flight to KCH. The total travel time, including layovers, can range from 6 to 10 hours, with flight costs varying but generally falling between ₱8,000 to ₱15,000 for a round trip, depending on the season and booking time.

Once you arrive at Kuching International Airport (KCH), getting to Bau is a comfortable journey of approximately 45 minutes to an hour by road. Taxis and ride-sharing services like Grab are readily available at the airport and offer a convenient way to reach your accommodation in Bau or Kuching City Center. For those who prefer pre-arranged transport, many hotels can assist with airport transfers. The scenic drive itself offers a first glimpse of Sarawak's lush landscapes, setting the tone for your exploration of Bau and its natural wonders. You can book flight tickets to KCH through Traveloka for competitive prices.

Navigating within Bau and its surrounding areas is best managed with a combination of local transport and pre-arranged options. While public buses connect some of the main towns, they may not be the most convenient for reaching specific attractions like caves or remote villages. Renting a car or hiring a private driver for day trips is highly recommended for flexibility, especially for exploring natural sites. Within Kuching City Center, Grab is an efficient and affordable option for getting around. For travellers staying in Bau town, walking is feasible for local exploration, with taxis available for longer distances.

The ideal time to visit Bau is generally during the dry season, which runs from March to October. This period offers pleasant weather with less rainfall, making it perfect for outdoor activities like cave exploration and hiking. While November to February can see more rain, it's also the shoulder season, potentially offering lower prices and fewer crowds. For travellers from the US, Europe, and India, aligning your visit with their respective school holidays might mean higher prices and more visitors, so planning outside these peak times can offer a more relaxed experience.

Before your trip to Bau, ensure you have the local currency, Malaysian Ringgit (MYR), on hand for smaller purchases and local transport. ATMs are widely available in Kuching and Bau town. Consider purchasing a local SIM card at the airport for easy data access, which is invaluable for navigation and communication. Essential apps to download include Google Maps, Grab, and a translation app. While English is widely spoken, having a translation tool can be helpful. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay, a standard requirement for entry into Malaysia.

Visa Information

For Philippine passport holders planning a trip to Malaysia to visit Bau, the visa requirements are generally straightforward. As of current regulations, Filipino citizens are typically granted visa-free entry into Malaysia for tourism purposes, allowing for stays of up to 30 days. This visa-free status simplifies travel planning significantly, as there is no need to apply for a visa in advance through an embassy or visa application center. However, it is crucial to ensure your passport has at least six months of validity remaining from your date of entry into Malaysia.

When entering Malaysia, immigration officials may request proof of onward travel, such as a return flight ticket, and evidence of sufficient funds to cover your stay. While not always asked for, having these documents readily available can expedite your entry process. The length of stay granted is at the discretion of the immigration officer, but for standard tourism, the 30-day allowance is usually applied. It is always recommended to check the latest immigration policies with the Malaysian Embassy or Consulate in the Philippines before your travel dates, as regulations can change.

Given that immigration policies are subject to change, it is highly advisable for all travellers, including those from the Philippines, to verify the most current visa and entry requirements directly with the official immigration authority of Malaysia or the Malaysian Embassy in their home country before booking any flights or accommodation. This proactive step ensures you are well-prepared and avoid any last-minute complications. While visa-free entry is common for Filipinos, confirming this status and any specific conditions is a responsible part of travel planning.
