We stayed for 3 nights and really enjoyed our time there. Upon check-in, we had to place a RM200 refundable deposit. The room was surprisingly spacious and very clean, with a lovely view of the ocean from the balcony. Waking up to that view every morning felt like a treat. Housekeeping was on point. The room had all the essentials, and when we asked for an iron and ironing board, they sent it up quite quickly. A small but thoughtful detail was the drying rack at the balcony—super useful for drying our wet swimwear after snorkeling. The hotel only has one lift, but since it's just three floors, it wasn’t an issue at all. Plus point—the hotel is literally a minute’s walk from the jetty, so it’s super convenient, especially when you’re arriving with bags. Breakfast buffet was okay-lah… not a lot of variety, so after the first day, we decided to check out the nearby eateries for local breakfast options instead.

More about hotels in Besut

Besut: A Gateway to Malaysia's Coastal Charms for the Discerning Filipino Traveller

For Filipino travellers seeking an escape beyond the usual Southeast Asian circuit, Besut in Malaysia offers a compelling blend of natural beauty and authentic local experiences. While Malaysia is renowned for its bustling metropolises and well-trodden tourist trails, Besut presents a more serene and less commercialised facet of the country. It’s a region where the pace of life slows, allowing for genuine connection with the environment and its people. From its pristine islands to its laid-back mainland towns, Besut provides a refreshing contrast to the familiar, promising a journey that feels both exotic and accessible.

The true allure of Besut lies in its diverse geographical tapestry, a characteristic that profoundly shapes the visitor's experience. The region encompasses the famed Perhentian Islands, split into the larger, more tranquil Pulau Perhentian Besar and the smaller, livelier Pulau Perhentian Kecil, offering distinct island vibes. On the mainland, the district of Besut itself, with its administrative centre in Jerteh and the key gateway town of Kuala Besut, provides a different, more grounded perspective. Understanding these variations is crucial, as choosing to stay on one of the islands versus the mainland will dictate the entire nature of your Besut adventure.

From a value perspective, Besut presents an attractive proposition for international travellers. With a starting price of approximately ₱ 994.87 per night for accommodation and an average review score of 7.6 from over 7,000 reviews, it signals a destination that offers substantial appeal without the premium price tag often associated with popular Malaysian locales. For travellers from the US, Europe, India, and Africa, this translates into an opportunity to experience Southeast Asian coastal beauty and culture at a more accessible cost, allowing for extended stays or the exploration of more activities.

The accommodation landscape in Besut mirrors this diversity, ranging from established resorts to more intimate lodgings. Iconic properties like the Perhentian Island Resort, a 3-star resort on Pulau Perhentian Besar, offer a classic island getaway experience, while the highly-rated 5-star Perhentian Marriott Resort & Spa on Pulau Perhentian Kecil signifies the potential for luxury. These examples, among many others available on Traveloka, illustrate the spectrum of choices, ensuring that whether you're looking for a simple beach hut or a more sophisticated stay, you can book hotel options that fit your needs.

Besut caters to a broad spectrum of international travellers. For Americans and Europeans, it offers a chance to explore a less-touristed part of Malaysia, with opportunities for diving and snorkelling that rival more famous destinations. Indian travellers will find familiar hospitality and a range of dining options, with the added benefit of competitive pricing. For those travelling from Africa, Besut can serve as an accessible entry point into Southeast Asian island life, offering a blend of relaxation and adventure that is both enriching and budget-friendly.

Best Areas to Stay in Besut

Besut is not a monolithic destination; its charm is amplified by the distinct character of its various neighbourhoods and islands. For international visitors, understanding these differences is key to crafting an ideal itinerary. Whether you seek the tranquil embrace of secluded beaches, the vibrant pulse of island life, or the convenience of mainland access, Besut offers a diverse range of locales. Choosing your base wisely will significantly shape your overall travel experience, from the activities you can easily access to the local atmosphere you'll spend time in.

Pulau Perhentian Besar

Pulau Perhentian Besar, translating to "Big Perhentian Island," offers a more tranquil and family-oriented atmosphere compared to its smaller counterpart. This island is suited to travellers who want a relaxed pace, with beautiful stretches of sand and clear waters perfect for unwinding. Its vibe is more laid-back, attracting couples and families who appreciate a quieter island escape. The natural beauty here is paramount, with lush jungle interiors providing a stunning backdrop to the turquoise sea, making it a serene base for exploring the archipelago.

Accommodation on Pulau Perhentian Besar ranges from comfortable resorts to more rustic chalets, many offering direct beach access. Activities here focus on water sports like snorkelling, diving, and kayaking, with opportunities to explore coral reefs teeming with marine life. Day trips to nearby smaller islands or snorkelling spots are readily available. Getting to Pulau Perhentian Besar involves a ferry from Kuala Besut, which is accessible via flights to nearby airports like Sultan Mahmud Airport (TGG) in Kuala Terengganu, followed by a land transfer.

Pulau Perhentian Kecil

Pulau Perhentian Kecil, or "Small Perhentian Island," buzzes with a more energetic and youthful atmosphere, particularly around Long Beach. This island attracts backpackers, solo travellers, and groups looking for a lively social scene alongside stunning natural beauty. While it offers quieter coves and beaches, its reputation is built on its vibrant nightlife, affordable accommodation options, and a strong community feel among travellers. It’s a place where you can easily meet fellow adventurers and enjoy a more social island experience.

The island is well-equipped with a variety of guesthouses, chalets, and resorts catering to different budgets. Popular activities include snorkelling, diving, and hiking to viewpoints. The availability of beach bars and restaurants adds to its appeal. Access is via ferry from Kuala Besut, similar to Pulau Perhentian Besar. For those looking to explore the underwater world, this island is a prime spot to book attractions and diving courses, with numerous operators readily available.

Kuala Besut

Kuala Besut serves as the primary gateway to the Perhentian Islands and offers a different perspective on Besut, one rooted in local life and commerce. This bustling town is where most travellers begin their island journey, and it provides a glimpse into the daily routines of the local community. It's a practical base for those who prefer mainland amenities and easy access to transportation hubs. The atmosphere is more functional than resort-like, with local markets, eateries, and shops catering to residents and transit passengers.

Accommodation in Kuala Besut ranges from simple guesthouses and budget hotels to more comfortable inns, suitable for travellers needing a place to stay before or after their island excursions. The town is known for its fresh seafood and local Malay cuisine. Its convenient location makes it convenient for onward travel, with ferry services to the Perhentian Islands departing regularly. For travellers arriving from further afield, Kuala Besut is accessible via road from major airports like Kuala Terengganu or Kota Bharu.

Jerteh

Jerteh is the administrative and commercial heart of the Besut district, offering a more urban experience compared to the islands or coastal areas. This town is where you'll find essential services, local businesses, and a more authentic slice of Malaysian life away from the tourist crowds. It's a good option for travellers who want to experience a typical Malaysian town, explore local markets, and sample authentic regional food. The pace here is slower than in major cities but more active than the island villages.

Accommodation in Jerteh primarily consists of budget-friendly hotels and homestays, catering to business travellers and locals. It's a place to experience everyday Malaysian life, with opportunities to visit local mosques, markets, and perhaps even the nearby Trustar Corporation S/B (Bukit Yong) for a touch of local industry insight. Jerteh is well-connected by road, making it a convenient stopover point. Travellers can reach Jerteh via bus services from various Malaysian cities, or by taking a taxi from the nearest airport.

Besut Mainland (General Area)

The broader Besut mainland area, encompassing towns and villages beyond Jerteh and Kuala Besut, offers a more rural and agricultural landscape. This region is characterised by paddy fields, rubber plantations, and traditional Malay kampungs (villages). It's an area best suited for travellers seeking a deeper immersion into local culture and a quieter, more authentic Malaysian experience. Visitors here can witness traditional crafts, sample home-cooked meals, and enjoy the serene countryside, far from the typical tourist trail.

Lodging options in this general mainland area are predominantly homestays and small, locally-run guesthouses, providing an intimate and personal hosting experience. Exploring this region might involve visiting local farms or artisanal workshops. For those interested in agricultural tourism, areas like Taman Kohafas Agro Darau offer insights into local produce and farming techniques. Getting around this area typically requires a car or motorcycle, as public transport is less frequent, and it's best accessed via road from Kuala Besut or Jerteh.

What to Eat and Where to Find It in Besut

Besut's culinary landscape is a delightful reflection of Malaysia's rich gastronomic heritage, offering a distinct flavour profile that draws from Malay, Chinese, and Indian influences, with a strong emphasis on fresh, local ingredients. For Filipino travellers, the experience of tasting authentic Malaysian dishes can be both familiar and excitingly new. Key to the Besut experience are its seafood offerings, thanks to its coastal location, and its traditional Malay cuisine, which often features aromatic spices and coconut milk. Exploring these flavours is an integral part of understanding the region's culture.

The culinary exploration in Besut is best undertaken by venturing into its local markets and eateries, particularly in areas like Kuala Besut and Jerteh. These towns are dotted with 'warungs' (small eateries) and 'kedai kopi' (coffee shops) that serve up local specialities. For Muslim travellers, Malaysia is a predominantly Muslim country, and Besut is no exception; finding Halal-certified eateries is generally straightforward, with most establishments adhering to Halal practices. Look for the Halal logo or inquire with locals for recommendations, ensuring a comfortable dining experience.

Dining in Besut offers a spectrum of price points, making it accessible for various budgets. Street food and local 'warungs' are incredibly affordable, with meals often costing as little as ₱ 50 to ₱ 150 per person. Mid-range restaurants offer a more comfortable dining experience for approximately ₱ 200 to ₱ 500 per person. Even the higher-end resort dining, while more expensive, often provides excellent value compared to similar establishments in Western countries. This affordability allows travellers to sample a wide variety of dishes without significant financial strain.

When dining in Besut, embracing local customs enhances the experience. It's customary to eat with your right hand, especially when served rice and side dishes in a traditional Malay style, though utensils are readily available. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for exceptional service, typically around 10%. Meal times are generally similar to Filipino schedules, with breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Being open to trying new flavours and understanding that some dishes might be spicier or sweeter than what you're accustomed to will lead to a more rewarding culinary journey.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Besut

Understanding and respecting local customs is paramount for any international traveller, and Besut, while generally welcoming, has its own set of social norms. Modesty in dress is appreciated, especially when visiting religious sites or more conservative areas. This means covering shoulders and knees. Public displays of affection should be kept to a minimum. When interacting with locals, a friendly demeanour and a smile go a long way. Learning a few basic Malay phrases like "Terima kasih" (Thank you) can also foster goodwill and enhance your interactions.

When visiting landmarks like Trustar Corporation S/B (Bukit Yong) or Taman Kohafas Agro Darau, it's important to be mindful of the local context. While these might be industrial or agricultural sites, they are part of the local community. Dress modestly, especially if there are local residents present. Photography is usually permitted, but it's always polite to ask permission before taking close-up photos of people. Queuing culture is generally observed, so be patient and wait your turn at any service points or entry gates.

Safety in Besut is generally high, with low crime rates, particularly in the island areas. However, standard precautions should always be taken. Keep valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets or transport hubs. For transportation, ride-hailing apps like Grab are widely available and reliable in mainland Besut and larger towns, offering a convenient and safe way to get around. On the islands, walking and boat taxis are the primary modes of transport. Always agree on fares before starting a journey if not using a metered service or app.

For Filipino travellers, it's reassuring to know that emergency services are accessible. In case of emergencies, dial 999 for police and ambulance. The nearest Philippine Embassy is located in Kuala Lumpur, which is a significant distance from Besut, so it's advisable to have contact details for the Philippine Embassy in Malaysia readily available. For any urgent concerns or assistance related to Overseas Workers and Welfare Administration (OWWA), their contact information should also be kept handy. Considering travel insurance is always a wise precaution for any international trip.

Getting to Besut and Getting Around

Reaching Besut from the Philippines is a journey that typically involves a flight to a major Malaysian hub followed by onward travel. While direct flights from Manila (MNL) or Cebu (CEB) to Besut are not available, travellers can fly to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) or Sultan Mahmud Airport (TGG) in Kuala Terengganu, which is the closest airport to Besut. Flights from Manila to KUL can range from ₱ 5,000 to ₱ 15,000 depending on the airline and booking time, with a flight duration of approximately 3.5 to 4 hours. From KUL, one can take a domestic flight to TGG (around 1 hour) or a bus.

Once you arrive at Sultan Mahmud Airport (TGG) in Kuala Terengganu, the most convenient way to reach Kuala Besut, the gateway to the Perhentian Islands, is by taxi or pre-booked car service, which takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours and costs around ₱ 1,000 to ₱ 1,500. Alternatively, public buses are available but may take longer and require transfers. For those heading to other parts of mainland Besut like Jerteh, bus services from Kuala Terengganu are also an option. It's advisable to book flight tickets and onward transport in advance, especially during peak seasons.

Navigating within Besut and its surrounding islands is relatively straightforward, though it varies by location. On the mainland, particularly in Jerteh and Kuala Besut, local buses and taxis are available, and ride-hailing services like Grab are operational. For travel between towns, intercity buses are a cost-effective option. On the Perhentian Islands, transportation is primarily by foot or by small boat taxis that connect different beaches and resorts. Renting a scooter can be an option for exploring the mainland at your own pace, but always ensure you have the appropriate license and insurance.

The best time to visit Besut, particularly the Perhentian Islands, is during the dry season, which generally runs from March to October. During these months, the seas are calmer, making boat travel safer and more comfortable, and the weather is typically sunny and pleasant for outdoor activities like snorkelling and diving. The peak season is usually from June to August, which sees higher prices and more crowds. The monsoon season, from November to February, brings heavy rainfall and rough seas, leading to the closure of many island resorts and limited boat services.

Before embarking on your trip to Besut, a few pre-departure preparations are essential. The local currency is the Malaysian Ringgit (MYR). While credit cards are accepted in larger hotels and resorts, it's wise to carry sufficient cash, especially for smaller establishments, markets, and boat fares on the islands. SIM cards can be purchased at the airport or in town for local calls and data. Essential apps include Google Maps for navigation, a translation app, and the Grab app for transport. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay.

Visa Information

For Philippine passport holders planning a trip to Besut, Malaysia, the visa requirements are generally straightforward. Philippine citizens are typically granted visa-free entry into Malaysia for tourism purposes, allowing for a stay of up to 30 days. This visa-free status simplifies travel planning significantly, as there is no need to apply for a visa in advance through an embassy or visa application centre. However, it is crucial to ensure your Philippine passport is valid for at least six months from your date of entry into Malaysia.

When entering Malaysia, immigration officials may request proof of onward travel, such as a return flight ticket, and sufficient funds to cover your stay. While not always asked, having these documents readily available can expedite the immigration process. The length of stay granted is at the discretion of the immigration officer. It is always recommended to check the latest entry requirements with the Malaysian High Commission in the Philippines or the Malaysian Immigration Department's official website before your travel dates, as regulations can change.

While visa-free entry is standard for Philippine passport holders, it is imperative to verify the most current regulations directly with official Malaysian immigration authorities or the Malaysian High Commission in the Philippines before booking flights and accommodation. Policies can be updated without extensive notice. Confirming your entry status and the permitted duration of stay will ensure a smooth and stress-free journey to Besut and other parts of Malaysia, allowing you to focus on enjoying your holiday.
