Once a fishing village, it had begun to develop significantly after the completion of Johor-Singapore Causeway in 1923 that links Malaysia to Singapore. After the World War II, the town has flourished and continue to develop until it was officially declared a city on 1 January 1994. This event was followed by the construction of Dataran Bandaraya Johor Bahru (Johor Bahru city square) as a commemoration.
