Reached hotel around 12:30 PM and the staff helped me to check in for an available room. Check-in was fast and smooth. Given a room at tower 2 and the 19th floor, the room was clean with a nice city view. I will book this hotel for my next trip with family. I will also definitely recommend this hotel to my friends & colleagues.

The hotel looks like an old building from the outside, but upon entering, it's actually quite large, with plenty of rooms. The room was clean, spacious, and comfortable. I requested a sea view and got both a sea view and a city view, allowing me to enjoy the fireworks on Chinese New Year's Eve. It was absolutely amazing. You could check in straight away in the morning, as it's just a short walk to the port building. If I ever visit Johor again, I'll definitely stay here again.

The hotel is beautifully located between the Pelangi and KSL areas, making it extremely convenient. Citrus Hotel is the best hotel to stay if planning to and from Singapore, just 5 minutes walking to JB CIQ. All the front reception was very good, my sincerely thank you to En. Putera, where he made our check-in fast and smooth as we are rushing to catch our train to SG. And thank you so much Mr. Eswaran for a great and good breakfast. Ohhh ya, the room was cleaned everyday during our stay for 4 days 3 nights. Parking just paid RM15 per day with security. My family was very happy and surely will stay in the same hotel again and again.

The hotel is walking distance to the main attraction of visiting Johor Bahru, the Legoland. Nearby you would find the Medini Mall, which you can find handfuls of restaurants, groceries, coffee shops, and causeway link bus station. The staff were very helpful and made our stay much enjoyable. They also had a Costa Coffee self-service machine, which was also a plus point in particular when craving for coffee or even hot chocolate.

I had a wonderful stay at Opero Hotel. Everything exceeded my expectations from the moment I arrived. The room was spotless, well maintained, and very comfortable. I especially loved the pillows; they were incredibly soft and made for a great night’s sleep. The highlight of my stay was definitely the breakfast buffet. Overall, Opero Hotel offers excellent comfort, cleanliness, and outstanding food. I would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a pleasant and relaxing stay.

Comfortable and clean hotel. I stayed in room 203, the room was big with a window. It was very pleasant to rest peacefully. Clean bathroom. Strong shower water, there is a bidet and jet shower in the toilet. Complete amenities. Soft bed and soft pillows. Eat Saur ala carte which is a menu that suits the Indonesian tongue. The location is outside JB Sentral but there are 2 KSL malls and Plaza Plangi. Behind the hotel there is a food court. I will stay again if I have a business trip in Spore.

Johor: A Vibrant Gateway for International Explorers

Johor, Malaysia, presents a compelling proposition for international travellers seeking a blend of culinary delights, extensive shopping opportunities, and family-centric entertainment. Unlike the more established tourist trails of Kuala Lumpur or Penang, Johor offers a more accessible and often more budget-friendly introduction to Malaysian culture and attractions. Its convenient location, particularly its proximity to Singapore, makes it a convenient stopover or a destination in its own right, promising a diverse range of experiences that cater to varied interests, from the avid shopper to the theme park enthusiast.

The sheer diversity within Johor is one of its most appealing aspects, offering distinct experiences across its various locales. From the family-focused attractions of Nusajaya/Legoland and the bustling commercial hubs of Tebrau and Johor Bahru - City Center, to the more relaxed vibes of Tampoi, Kulai, Gelang Patah, Danga Bay, and the coastal charm of Kota Tinggi, each area provides a unique flavour. Even the broader regions like Johor Bahru and Muar contribute to this rich mosaic, ensuring that travellers can tailor their visit to their specific preferences, whether they seek urban excitement or a more tranquil escape.

Compared to prices in the US or Europe, these costs are remarkably low, allowing travellers to indulge in a variety of culinary experiences without significant financial strain.

Navigating dining etiquette in Johor is straightforward. Tipping is not customary in most local eateries, though a small tip for exceptional service in higher-end restaurants is appreciated. It's common to use your right hand for eating if dining with hands, especially in more traditional settings. Meal times are generally similar to Western schedules, with breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Be adventurous and try local specialties; many vendors are happy to explain their dishes, making the dining experience both enjoyable and educational.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Johor

Understanding local customs and etiquette is crucial for a respectful and enjoyable trip to Johor. As a predominantly Muslim country, modest dress is appreciated, especially when visiting religious sites. While tourist areas are generally relaxed, it's advisable for women to dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees. Greetings typically involve a handshake, and it's polite to use your right hand for giving and receiving items. Being mindful of these cultural nuances will enhance your interactions with locals and contribute to a smoother travel experience.

When visiting popular attractions like Legoland Malaysia or Danga Bay, adhering to specific rules ensures a pleasant experience for everyone. Dress codes are generally casual but appropriate for family environments. Photography is usually permitted, but always be respectful and avoid photographing individuals without their consent. Queuing culture is generally orderly, and patience is appreciated. Understanding and respecting these norms, especially in family-oriented or religious settings, demonstrates cultural sensitivity and contributes positively to your visit.

Johor is generally a safe destination for international travellers. However, like any urban area, it's wise to take precautions against petty theft, especially in crowded markets or on public transport. Using reputable ride-hailing apps like Grab is recommended for convenient and safe transportation. It's also advisable to keep valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, particularly at night. Familiarizing yourself with basic safety tips will help ensure a secure and enjoyable trip.

In case of emergencies, the national emergency number in Malaysia is 999 for police and ambulance services. For Filipino travellers, it's important to know the location of the Philippine Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, which can provide assistance if needed. While there isn't a consulate in Johor itself, the embassy is the primary point of contact for consular services. Considering travel insurance is also a prudent step to cover any unforeseen medical expenses or travel disruptions.

Getting to Johor and Getting Around

For Filipino travellers planning a trip to Johor, the most convenient way to travel is by air. Flights from Manila (MNL), Cebu (CEB), and other major Philippine hubs to Senai International Airport (JHB), which serves Johor, are readily available. While direct flights might be limited, connecting flights through Kuala Lumpur (KUL) or Singapore (SIN) are common. The total travel time can range from 4 to 8 hours, depending on the layover. Booking your flight in advance through Traveloka can secure competitive fares, often starting from ₱ 5,000 to ₱ 10,000 round trip.

Once you arrive in Johor, navigating the region is relatively straightforward. The most common and convenient mode of transport is ride-hailing services like Grab, which are widely available and affordable, with short trips costing around ₱ 100-200. Local buses also operate throughout Johor Bahru and connect to other towns, offering a very budget-friendly option. For exploring specific neighbourhoods like Nusajaya/Legoland or Danga Bay, taxis are also an option, though ride-hailing apps often provide more transparent pricing.

The best time to visit Johor is generally during the dry season, from March to October. During these months, the weather is typically sunny and less humid, making it ideal for outdoor activities and exploring attractions like Legoland Malaysia and Danga Bay. While this period can be considered peak season, especially during school holidays in Malaysia and Singapore, hotel prices remain relatively affordable compared to other international destinations. Visiting during the shoulder months can offer a good balance of pleasant weather and fewer crowds.

Before departing for Johor, ensure you have your passport, which should be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay. The local currency is the Malaysian Ringgit (MYR). While credit cards are widely accepted in hotels and larger establishments, carrying some cash for smaller vendors and local markets is advisable. Consider purchasing a local SIM card upon arrival at Senai International Airport for easy data access and communication. Essential apps to download include Grab for transport, Google Maps for navigation, and a translation app.

Visa Information

For Philippine passport holders planning to visit Malaysia, including the region of Johor, visa requirements are generally straightforward. Philippine citizens are typically granted visa-free entry into Malaysia for tourism purposes, allowing for stays of up to 30 days. This makes it a convenient destination for short trips and holidays. It is essential to ensure your passport has at least six months of validity remaining from your date of entry and that you possess proof of onward travel, such as a return flight ticket. Use Traveloka to find the best flights — book flight.

While visa-free entry is standard, immigration officials at the point of entry may request documentation to verify the purpose of your visit. This can include hotel bookings and sufficient funds to cover your stay. Although no specific visa application process is required for short tourist stays, travellers should always confirm the latest entry requirements with the Malaysian Embassy or Consulate in the Philippines before their trip, as regulations can change. Having a printed itinerary and hotel reservations can expedite the immigration process.

It is crucial for all travellers to stay informed about the most current visa and entry regulations. Immigration policies are subject to change without prior notice. Therefore, before booking your flight or making any non-refundable arrangements, it is highly recommended to verify the latest requirements directly with the official immigration authorities of Malaysia or the Malaysian Embassy in your country of residence. This proactive step ensures a smooth and hassle-free journey to Johor.
