Your Travel Guide to Manila as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Manila from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For Filipino travelers journeying to Manila from other major cities in the Philippines, flying remains the most efficient option. Major airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia operate frequent flights to Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) from key hubs such as Cebu, Davao, and Iloilo. Flight prices can range from PHP 1,500 to PHP 5,000 for a round trip, depending on the season and how far in advance you book. Travel time is typically between 1 to 2 hours. You can easily book flight tickets on Traveloka. book flight tickets through Traveloka for the best fares.

For those traveling from Luzon's northern or southern regions, bus travel is a more economical choice. Numerous bus companies operate daily trips to various terminals in Metro Manila, including Cubao, Pasay, and Taft Avenue. Fares typically range from PHP 500 to PHP 1,500, with travel times varying significantly from 6 to 12 hours depending on the origin point and traffic. This option is best for those who prefer a scenic route or are traveling on a tighter budget.

Driving to Manila is also an option for those coming from nearby provinces. Major expressways like the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) connect to the city. Toll fees can add up, so it's important to factor this into your budget. The journey can take anywhere from 2 to 5 hours, depending on your starting point and traffic conditions, which can be quite heavy, especially during peak hours.

Best Time to Visit Manila

The ideal time to visit Manila for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which typically runs from November to April. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower humidity, making it more comfortable for exploring the city's outdoor attractions and historical sites. The cooler months between November and February are particularly pleasant, with average temperatures ranging from 24°C to 30°C.

The wet season, from May to October, brings frequent rainfall, often in the form of heavy afternoon downpours. While this season can offer lower hotel rates and fewer crowds, it also means that outdoor activities might be disrupted. If you plan to visit during this period, it's wise to pack an umbrella and be prepared for potential changes in your itinerary due to weather. Regardless of the season, Manila's indoor attractions and culinary scene are always accessible.

Food and Dining Near Manila — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Manila is complete without indulging in its rich culinary landscape. A must-try is Adobo, the Philippines' unofficial national dish. Whether it's chicken or pork, simmered in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns, its savory and tangy flavor is a true representation of Filipino taste. You can find excellent versions in traditional eateries and even in more contemporary restaurants across the city.

Another iconic dish is Sinigang, a sour and savory soup, typically made with tamarind broth and a choice of meat like pork, beef, or fish, along with various vegetables. Its comforting, slightly tart flavor is perfect for any weather. For a taste of street food culture, try Balut, a fertilized duck embryo, which is an acquired taste but a significant part of Filipino culinary heritage. Many street vendors sell this, especially in the evenings.

For those with a sweet tooth, Halo-Halo is an absolute delight. This popular dessert is a colorful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It's the perfect refreshment on a warm Manila day. You can find this at almost any local restaurant or dessert shop. Exploring the local food scene is a key part of the travel experience.

Don't forget to sample Lechon, a whole roasted pig known for its crispy skin and succulent meat. While often a centerpiece for celebrations, many restaurants offer Lechon portions for everyday enjoyment. For a more casual dining experience, explore the local carinderias (small eateries) for authentic home-style Filipino cooking. These spots offer a genuine taste of local flavors at affordable prices.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Manila

Filipino culture is known for its warmth and hospitality. Greetings are important; a simple "Magandang umaga/hapon/gabi" (Good morning/afternoon/evening) goes a long way. Filipinos are generally respectful of elders and authority figures. When visiting churches or religious sites, dress modestly. It's also common to be invited into homes, and accepting such invitations is a sign of politeness.

When it comes to safety, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas, to avoid petty theft. Keep your valuables secure and be cautious of unsolicited offers or overly friendly strangers. For emergencies, the general emergency number in the Philippines is 911. It's also a good idea to have the contact details of your hotel and the local police station readily available.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. Grab is indispensable for ride-hailing and food delivery, making transportation and dining convenient. Google Maps is crucial for navigation, helping you find your way around the city. For communication, WhatsApp or Messenger are widely used by locals. Having these apps can significantly simplify your stay in Manila.

Understanding local customs can greatly enrich your interactions. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for good service, usually around 10%. Bargaining is common in markets, but do so politely. Being open to experiencing local traditions and engaging with the community will undoubtedly make your trip more rewarding.

Worst experience, out of the many staycations we've had, this is the only one that's different 😡 if you book with others, we were just spoiled, we almost didn't enjoy our stay there, the air conditioner was weak, it didn't get stronger, we called the receptionist to send house keeping but that's it, instead of looking for another room with proper air conditioning, they just installed electricity for housekeeping??? Then someone tripped like someone rang the doorbell in the middle of the night in our room, we also reported it, still no action, and in the morning my son, oh my god, his eyes were swollen, he was bitten by an insect in our bed, we also reported it and the next thing was to buy antihistamine ?? There was no action taken on everything we complained about, even if you change your money when you order, there is no return, you will be ashamed of them, their pool is dirty, the water is so painful to the eyes. They are strict with their rules but very irresponsible with their guesses.

It was so hot in our room. We had our air conditioning unit checked twice by the hotel staff, but it still wasn't able to cool our room. We didn't even use our blankets because it was hot in our bed. There was also a hole in the wall near the bathroom and there were small cockroaches coming into our room. The heater in the shower wasn't working as well. There were also times when it was noisy in the corridor. People in the front desk were nice, but I will never go back to this hotel again. I wasn't expecting much but a good night 's sleep at the least would've been nice. I am disappointed.

Customer service is awesome. However, I find it uncomfy to hear noises at night especially slamming of doors even at 1am!
