Your Travel Guide to Boracay Island as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Boracay Island from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For Filipino travelers planning a trip to Boracay Island, reaching this tropical destination is accessible from major hubs like Manila, Cebu, and Davao. The most common and efficient way is by air. From Manila (NAIA), you can take a flight to either Caticlan Airport (MPH) or Kalibo International Airport (KLO). Airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia offer numerous daily flights.

Flights to Caticlan are more convenient as it’s closer to the jetty port, with a travel time of approximately 1 hour and fares typically ranging from PHP 3,000 to PHP 7,000 round trip, depending on the season and booking time. Flights to Kalibo are often cheaper but require a longer land transfer (about 1.5 to 2 hours) to Caticlan Jetty Port. Booking your book flight in advance is highly recommended to secure better prices.

From Cebu (Mactan-Cebu International Airport), direct flights to Caticlan are also available, offering a convenient option for Visayas-based travelers. Similar to flights from Manila, expect a travel time of about 1 hour. If direct flights are not available or are more expensive, flying via Manila is also an option. For those coming from Davao, flights usually connect through Manila or Cebu. The overall flight cost and duration will depend on the chosen route and airline.

Once you land at either Caticlan or Kalibo, you’ll proceed to Caticlan Jetty Port for the boat ride to Boracay Island.

For budget-conscious travelers, land and sea travel is an alternative, though significantly longer. From Manila, you can take a bus to Caticlan Jetty Port. Several bus companies operate routes from terminals in Pasay or Cubao, with journeys lasting approximately 10 to 12 hours. Bus fares typically range from PHP 800 to PHP 1,500 one way. This option is best for those who have ample time and prefer to save on airfare.

Upon reaching Caticlan Jetty Port, you will then take the boat to Boracay Island. This method requires careful planning regarding departure times and ferry schedules.

Best Time to Visit Boracay Island

Boracay Island experiences two main seasons: the dry season (Amihan) and the wet season (Habagat). The dry season, typically from November to May, is considered the peak tourist season. During these months, the weather is generally sunny with calm seas and gentle breezes, making it ideal for beach activities, swimming, and water sports. The period between November and February offers pleasant temperatures and lower humidity, making it a comfortable time for most visitors.

This is when the island is most alive with activity, and the waters are at their clearest.

The wet season, from June to October, is characterized by stronger winds and occasional rainfall. While this period might see fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices, it can also mean rougher seas, which might affect boat tours and water activities. However, even during the wet season, Boracay can still be enjoyable, with sunny spells often interspersed with rain.

For Filipino travelers looking for a more laid-back atmosphere and potentially better deals, the shoulder months of the dry season (late October to early November) or the early part of the wet season (June to July) can offer a good balance of pleasant weather and fewer tourists.

For the best overall experience, especially for first-time visitors or those who want to maximize their beach time, the dry season from November to May is highly recommended. The period from December to April is particularly popular, so booking accommodations and flights well in advance is crucial. If you prefer a quieter visit and don't mind the possibility of occasional rain, the shoulder months or the early part of the wet season can still provide a wonderful Boracay experience.

Food and Dining Near Boracay Holiday Resort — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Boracay Island, while famous for its beaches, also boasts a culinary scene that delights Filipino palates with fresh seafood and local flavors. Near Boracay Holiday Resort, you'll find numerous eateries offering classic Filipino dishes. One absolute must-try is **Kinilaw**, the Filipino version of ceviche. Fresh, raw fish (often tuna or tanigue) is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili peppers, creating a tangy and refreshing appetizer that’s perfect for the tropical climate.

Look for it in local carinderias or seafood restaurants around Station 2.

Another essential dish is **La Paz Batchoy**, a hearty noodle soup originating from Iloilo, but widely loved across the Philippines. This rich broth, filled with pork, shrimp, and various toppings, is a comforting and flavorful meal. While not exclusively a Boracay dish, finding a well-prepared bowl in a local eatery near the hotel offers a taste of home and a satisfying meal, especially on a cooler evening.

For seafood lovers, grilled specialties are a highlight. Freshly caught fish, squid, and prawns are often grilled to perfection over charcoal. You can find these at many beachfront restaurants. The simplicity of grilling allows the natural flavors of the seafood to shine, often enhanced with just a squeeze of calamansi and a dash of soy sauce. Pair this with a side of garlic rice and a fresh ensaladang talong (grilled eggplant salad) for a truly Filipino feast.

Don't leave Boracay without trying **Halo-Halo**, the ultimate Filipino dessert. This iconic treat is a delightful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It’s a colorful and refreshing way to end a meal or cool down on a hot afternoon. Many stalls and restaurants around D'Mall and Station 2 offer their own unique versions, so be sure to sample a few to find your favorite.

While Boracay is known for its party scene, especially in Station 2, it also offers serene spots for relaxation.

Be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas, and keep your valuables secure. Avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas late at night. It’s also wise to have the contact numbers for local authorities readily available.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) can be reached through emergency hotlines.

For a smoother trip, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is indispensable for finding your way around the island and locating restaurants or attractions. Ride-hailing apps are not prevalent on Boracay itself, as tricycles are the primary mode of transport, but apps that show ferry schedules or local transport information can be useful. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Messenger are widely used by Filipinos to stay connected.

Having these tools at your fingertips can significantly enhance your travel experience.

Location is ideal, a short walk to the beach and the Mall. Our room is big enough but definitely needs an update. The bathroom especially. We loved the swimming pool though as not all hotels in Boracay has a huge pool like this one for the price at BHR.

Staff are friendly nut they need to know more about, perhaps some in-house orientation about the tourism industry, Boracay so they can provide some insights on where to go and how to go about things. Rooms are decent. Water is strong, No internet though as a result of the recent typhoon. Breakfast was satisfying. The road towards the beach near the hotel is not nice and dirty. Perhaps because of the typhoon?

First time I have left a review on a hotel and I have stayed in hotels around 40 nights in the last 3 years. We went for breakfast the first morning only to find the breakfast was served cold and very limited. We did not attend breakfast for the remaining 2 mornings however we had friends staying at the resort at a different hotel who was happy to accept the breakfast coupon and they too complained that the breakfast was served cold, even at 6am when breakfast opened. The mattress was not great and the pillows was terrible. The taps and shower tap was wobbly and lose and felt like they could give up at any moment. We had secure safe for the first day due to no availability and on the second day we managed to receive a safe, delivered to our room but the safe was faulty and we was told the safe would be replaced and delivered back to our room but this never happened. Initially we was placed in a room with a window view which I can only describe as looking like a damaged roof of a damaged garden shed. Then on our second day we see a dead rat at the bottom of the stairs. This dirty dead rat was present for over 48 hours before being removed. I can report more issues too but I am running out of space. Overall not a great experience and would not recommend to anyone accept my enemies.

Great stay. Location is great, only a quick walk to the beach. Breakfast had a great selection. Pool is very nice and quiet, most people go to the beach and swim. Beach is very crowded. Life guards at the pool very friendly and always smiling. My original room was located next to a patio for smoking. First 2 nights were fine, but then smokers moved to that floor and were smoking all night playing music. I don’t smoke. I requested a new room and front desk was very helpful. They moved me away from smoking patio to back of hotel. New room was very quiet and no smokers around. Great service overall. I would recommend this hotel. Be sure if you don’t smoke to ask for room away from smoking patios.

The hotel itself is ok. It is located within walking distance to the beach. It is near the main road as well so easily accessible. MacDonald’s. Jollybee, souvenir and coffee shops are nearby. The pool is nice and well cared for. The pool side bar/grill is adequate. The breakfast is very typical (cold cereal, breads, eggs, longanisa, powdered “juice” drinks, etc.). There is tea and brewed coffee, as well as whole milk. The room is ok. Beds are basic (thin mattress on wood frame). The bathroom is good. Hot water and everything is functional. Room cleaning is only available on request. Amenities consist of a few small bars of soap and 2 packets of shampoo. The drinking water and soap are not replaced when the room is cleaned. We had to request toilet paper even after they cleaned the room. There is no elevator. This is important. On our second night there a man was checking in who had reserved a ground floor room and was told there were none available. He had leg problems and the stairs were difficult for him. We reserved a double bed. We were given two twin beds. We were told that there were no double beds available. The staff is laid back, friendly and attentive. Wifi is slow but mostly working. If you are on a budget and want a step above the hostel this is an option. I will not stay here next time.
