Your Travel Guide to Puerto Princesa as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Puerto Princesa from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way for most Filipino travelers to reach Puerto Princesa is by air. Major airlines operate daily flights from Manila (MNL) to Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS). Flight durations typically range from 1 hour to 1 hour and 15 minutes. Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book, but budget-friendly options are often available if you plan ahead.

For those coming from other major cities like Cebu or Clark, direct flights to Puerto Princesa may also be available, though sometimes connecting through Manila is necessary. It is always recommended to compare prices and schedules to find the most suitable option. You can easily book flight tickets through Traveloka to find competitive rates.

While land travel is possible for those within Palawan or willing to undertake a very long journey, it is not practical for most travelers coming from Luzon or Visayas. The ferry routes to Palawan are extensive but time-consuming. For a trip to Puerto Princesa, flying remains the most efficient and popular choice for Filipino travelers seeking to maximize their vacation time.

Best Time to Visit Puerto Princesa

Puerto Princesa enjoys a tropical climate year-round, but the best time to visit for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which typically runs from November to May. During these months, you can expect sunny days with lower chances of rain, making it ideal for outdoor activities, island hopping, and exploring the Underground River without significant weather disruptions.

The peak tourist season generally falls between December and February, coinciding with cooler temperatures and holiday breaks. While the weather is excellent, expect larger crowds and potentially higher prices for flights and accommodations. For a balance of good weather and fewer crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder months of November, March, or April.

The wet season, from June to October, brings a higher chance of rainfall, which can sometimes affect tour schedules, especially for boat trips. However, this period also offers lower prices and fewer tourists, which can be appealing for budget-conscious travelers. If you don't mind occasional rain showers, you can still have a wonderful trip during these months.

Food and Dining Near Puerto Princesa — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Palawan's cuisine is a delightful reflection of its coastal bounty and local ingredients. When in Puerto Princesa, be sure to try Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche. Fresh raw fish is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili peppers, offering a tangy and refreshing taste that perfectly complements the tropical climate. Many local eateries and restaurants serve this popular dish.

Another must-try is the Tamilok, a unique delicacy found in the mangrove areas. These woodworms are typically served fresh, dipped in vinegar, or lightly fried. While the appearance might be unusual for some, it's considered a local delicacy and an adventurous culinary experience for those willing to try it. It’s often found in local markets or specialized restaurants.

Seafood is, of course, a highlight in Puerto Princesa. Grilled fish, prawns, and squid are readily available and prepared in various delicious ways. take advantage of this on trying the local version of La Paz Batchoy, a hearty noodle soup, or the rich and flavorful Chicken Adobo, a Filipino classic that always satisfies. Exploring the local markets and small carinderias will give you an authentic taste of Palawan.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Puerto Princesa

Filipino travelers will find Puerto Princesa to be a welcoming city with a generally relaxed pace of life. Politeness and respect are highly valued, so always greet locals with a smile and use courteous language. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service. Safety in Puerto Princesa is generally good, but as with any travel destination, it's wise to take standard precautions. Keep your valuables secure, be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas, and avoid walking alone in poorly lit places late at night. For emergencies, the local police hotline is 911. It's also a good idea to have the contact details of your accommodation readily available.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is crucial for getting around. Daluyon is a beautiful beachfront resort, I love that they have kayaking and paddleboarding available for guests which we enjoyed . The breakfast is inclusive and it was delicious, service was warm and exceptional. We enjoyed our dinner at the beach and the strawberry mojito was delicious. Booking our tours was very efficient and easy, front desk is very attentive. Laundry service is also available so we did not have to pack wet clothes. The Filipino massage was very good and just what I needed to ease some tensed muscles. Daluyon is a beautiful beachfront resort with exceptional service and staff. It’s also located very close to the world famous Underground River, sadly our tour was cancelled due to some bad weather, I guess this gives us some good reason to come back, thank you Daluyon staff for such wonderful service!

My partner and I had a rocky start. We arrived in the evening and were welcomed with some drinks. They said it was liquor free but it ended up having alcohol and I’m allergic. Then the next morning when we called for the underground river tour they said we didn’t have time to be included even though that was the only day we could do it and they told us the night before to call in the morning. Anyways, they ended up finding a way for us to go in short notice, we were pretty flustered since we rushed to get ready. Nonetheless they rectified these issues by giving us two underground river tours free of charge. Although a couple things went wrong, the place itself and the staff made up for it. It is breathtakingly beautiful. The beach hardly has any people on it, so you almost have a beach to yourself. There’s paddle boards, archery, and many other things to enjoy. The hammocks and sun chairs were lovely, and the pool was so refreshing and clean. The gluten free bread is to die for! This place was the highlight of our entire month stay in the Philippines, we will definitely be returning. Thank you Daluyon!

This is the best choice in beachfront luxury at an affordable price. The pool has a swim up bar. Great rooms and top of the line restaurant. Food Simply incredible resort. Easily the best in the This place is so convenient for the underground river tour, Zipline, waterfalls, mangrove tour etc. We literally walked 20 minutes to get to the Zipline. To the underground river, we walked 10 minutes to the wharf where all tour start. If you want a headstart to all these activities without wasting 5-7 hours on the van, this is the place to stay. Service is fantastic. The food is good too. There is complimentary buffet breakfast - which includes entree options (Filipino or European). Lunch and dinner is also amazing. They make the best Pinakbet, Sisig, Sinigang etc. I did hear their food is professionally designed by a chef (Kevin Villarica who has an upscale restaurant in Rockwell). Rooms range from standard to suite style rooms. Rooms are rustic yet elegant (not cookie cutter Marriott style). We got the suite so we had an adjoining room and a living room. The AC is strong but I think they should have a ceiling fan installed too. There are 2 infinii style pools, volleyball court, lots of water activities too. The beach is just steps from your cottage. There are paddle boats and kayaks for free. The private beach includes hammocks, and loungers. There is a bar along the beach. There is a lifeguard during the day. Someone cleans the beach every morning.

Typhoon hit Palawan so our trip was cancelled. Every other one of our hotels refunded the money except this hotel. Will be claiming it through credit card dispute.

Beautiful beachfront room in one of the lodges. Direct view and access of the beach, shared with only one other resort. Food, cocktails and service were 10/10.

We stayed here for the evening after doing the Underground River and was a super chilled and lovely add on staying in beach villa room. Staff were super helpful and welcoming. Pool great and free beach equipment (kayak, SUP) was an unknown surprise. Yummy breakfast!

Staffs are super friendly and approachable they are what differs Daluyon from other resorts. They are also very thoughtful and caring to their guests. Food in the restaurant was super great and tasty I just wish there were more options but overall a fantastic experience special shout to Eula for always refilling the candy shells :)

The place is very remote and hard to access but really worth it! It is traditional, with amazing front sea view. A very particular feel overall being there in low season when it was very quiet. Staff is so nice, food is ok but probably the weakest point. An incredible experience!

Very unique stay for us--it is located off the main beach area and there is a short hike from the beach to where our room was. We loved the walk to and from and it was very peaceful. Our hosts were super helpful at answering questions. We loved the addition of utilizing the gym available as well.
