I had a wonderful stay at Princesa Garden Island Resort on Christmas Eve! The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, ensuring a seamless check-in and a comfortable experience throughout. My room was clean, spacious, and well-equipped with all the necessary amenities. One of the highlights was the thoughtful gesture of giving a gift to our toddler, which made the holiday season even more special. The breakfast buffet and festive decorations added a cozy touch to our stay. I highly recommend this hotel and look forward to staying again in the future!

We had a pleasant stay at Panja Resort. The staff are friendly. The place is near Baker's Hill (one of the tourist spots included in the city tour), around 10-15 minutes' walk from the hotel. Mitra's Ranch is also near it, but we were not able to go there due to our time limit. They also have a free ride from and to Robinsons mall. You may want to check their schedules. Also, they have free airport transfer from the hotel (only).

More about hotels in Cabayugan

Discover Cabayugan: Your Gateway to Palawan's Natural Wonders

Cabayugan, a region within the Philippines, offers a compelling proposition for international travellers seeking an authentic and breathtaking escape. Unlike the bustling metropolises or heavily touristed islands, Cabayugan presents a more intimate encounter with the archipelago's renowned natural beauty and warm hospitality. It serves as a crucial entry point to the Underground River, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and boasts a coastline dotted with pristine beaches and vibrant marine life. For those looking to experience the Philippines beyond the typical itinerary, Cabayugan provides a unique blend of adventure, relaxation, and cultural immersion, making it a destination that truly resonates with discerning global visitors.

The allure of Cabayugan is amplified by the distinct character of its various neighbourhoods and districts. From the coastal charm of Sabang, the primary gateway to the Underground River, to the more developed areas around Puerto Princesa, and the quieter, more rural settings of Bancao-Bancao, San Pedro, and Aborlan, each locale offers a different facet of the region. Tiniguiban and Concepcion present their own unique appeals, while the central Cabayugan area itself provides a local flavour. Understanding these differences is key for international travellers, as choosing where to base oneself can significantly shape the entire travel experience, from accessibility to local atmosphere.

For international travellers, Cabayugan represents exceptional value. With a starting price point around Sabang Boat Terminal/night and an average of ₱ 1,483.42/night for accommodations, it stands out as an affordable yet rich destination. This pricing is particularly attractive to travellers from the United States, Europe, and India, where similar experiences would command significantly higher costs. Cabayugan allows visitors to enjoy world-class natural attractions and comfortable stays without the prohibitive expense often associated with tropical island destinations, offering a more accessible way to explore the Philippines' natural treasures.

The accommodation landscape in Cabayugan is as diverse as its natural scenery, with options ranging from simple guesthouses to more established resorts. Sabang, in particular, is a focal point for many visitors, offering a range of lodging that caters to different budgets and preferences. Whether you're seeking a basic room to rest after a day of exploration or a more comfortable base with amenities, you can find suitable options. For those ready to plan their trip, exploring the available accommodations is a crucial first step to ensure a seamless and enjoyable stay in this captivating region. You can easily book hotel options that fit your needs.

Cabayugan appeals to a broad spectrum of international travellers. For US travellers, it offers an exotic adventure with opportunities for exploration and relaxation. European visitors often seek the cultural richness and natural beauty, appreciating the historical significance of the Underground River and the unique ecosystems. Indian travellers are drawn to the affordability, the vibrant local culture, and the ease of access from major hubs within Asia. While African travellers might find regional proximity less of a factor, the allure of a tropical destination with unique natural wonders and a welcoming atmosphere makes Cabayugan a compelling choice for anyone seeking an enriching travel experience.

Best Areas to Stay in Cabayugan

Cabayugan, while a region rather than a single city, is comprised of distinct neighbourhoods and districts, each offering a unique atmosphere and set of experiences for international visitors. Understanding these areas is crucial for tailoring your trip to your preferences, whether you prioritize proximity to natural wonders, a lively atmosphere, or a tranquil retreat. From the bustling hub of Sabang to the more serene outskirts, choosing your base within Cabayugan will significantly influence your overall journey and the memories you create.

Sabang

Sabang is the primary gateway to the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, making it a focal point for many international travellers. The vibe here is one of adventure and natural exploration, with a constant flow of visitors eager to experience the underground river. It’s a place where the energy is driven by the day's excursions, offering a lively yet relaxed atmosphere. Travellers who prioritize direct access to major attractions and enjoy a communal travel spirit will find Sabang particularly appealing. Hotels like Kamalay Pension House and Dabdab Tourist Inn are situated here, offering convenient bases for exploring the area's natural wonders.

From a practical standpoint, Sabang is well-equipped to handle tourist needs, with numerous tour operators, restaurants, and accommodation options. Getting to Sabang typically involves a flight into Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS), followed by a van or bus ride to the Sabang port, which takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. Once in Sabang, most activities revolve around the Underground River, boat tours, and nearby beaches. For those looking to explore further afield, car rental services are available, allowing for day trips to other parts of Palawan. It's an ideal starting point to book attractions and tours.

Cabayugan (Central Area)

The central area of Cabayugan offers a more local perspective, away from the immediate tourist bustle of Sabang but still conveniently located for accessing key attractions. This district provides a glimpse into the daily life of the region, with local markets, community centres, and a more laid-back pace. It’s a good choice for travellers who want to experience a more authentic slice of Filipino life while remaining within easy reach of the natural wonders. The atmosphere is generally peaceful, punctuated by the sounds of local commerce and community interactions.

For travellers staying in central Cabayugan, accessibility to both Puerto Princesa and Sabang is a significant advantage. Public transportation, such as local jeepneys and vans, connects this area to the main city and the coastal attractions. This makes it a practical base for those who prefer to explore at their own pace and are comfortable using local transport. While it may not have the direct beachfront access of Sabang, it offers a more grounded experience, allowing visitors to connect with the local culture and enjoy a more relaxed stay.

Bancao-Bancao

Bancao-Bancao, located within the broader Puerto Princesa area, offers a blend of accessibility and a more residential feel, making it an attractive option for travellers seeking a balance between convenience and tranquility. This district is known for its proximity to the city centre of Puerto Princesa, providing easy access to amenities, dining, and transportation hubs, while still offering a quieter environment than the immediate downtown core. It’s a good base for those who want to explore both the natural attractions of the region and the urban conveniences of the provincial capital.

The advantage of staying in Bancao-Bancao lies in its convenient location. It’s well-connected to Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS) and serves as a good starting point for day trips to Sabang and other Palawan destinations. Visitors can easily find local eateries and shops, experiencing a more authentic neighbourhood vibe. For travellers who appreciate having essential services nearby without being in the thick of tourist crowds, Bancao-Bancao presents a comfortable and practical choice for their stay in the Cabayugan region.

San Pedro

San Pedro, another district within the Puerto Princesa vicinity, offers a more serene and perhaps slightly more upscale residential atmosphere compared to the bustling tourist hubs. It’s an area where you can find well-maintained properties and a sense of calm, appealing to travellers who prioritize a peaceful environment after a day of exploration. While not directly on the coast or at the heart of the Underground River access, its well-connected nature means that key attractions are still within reasonable travel distance, often via readily available transport.

This district is particularly suited for travellers who appreciate a quieter base, perhaps families or couples looking for a more relaxed holiday. The presence of establishments like Balai Princesa and Tenzai Homestay suggests a range of accommodation options that cater to those seeking comfort and a more local feel. Getting to and from San Pedro is generally straightforward, with connections to the main transport routes of Puerto Princesa, making it a viable option for those who want to experience the natural beauty of Cabayugan without being constantly surrounded by tourist activity.

Aborlan

Aborlan, situated further south of Puerto Princesa, offers a more rural and less developed experience, appealing to travellers seeking a genuine escape from the more frequented tourist spots. This area is characterized by its natural landscapes, agricultural lands, and a slower pace of life. It’s a destination for those who want to immerse themselves in the local culture and enjoy the tranquility of the Philippine countryside, with opportunities for exploring local communities and natural scenery that might be less touched by mass tourism.

For travellers choosing Aborlan, the primary draw is its authenticity and the chance to experience a side of Palawan that is less commercialized. Accommodation options like Surya Beach Resort Palawan suggest a focus on natural settings and a more intimate experience. Access to Aborlan typically involves travel from Puerto Princesa, making it a destination for those who are willing to venture a bit further for a more secluded and genuine encounter with the region. It’s a place for reflection and connection with nature.

Puerto Princesa (City Proper)

While Cabayugan is the specific region of focus, the city of Puerto Princesa itself acts as a major hub and a convenient base for exploring the wider area, including Sabang and the Underground River. Staying within the city proper offers the most comprehensive access to amenities, including the international airport, a wide array of dining options, shopping, and a more developed infrastructure. It’s a practical choice for travellers who appreciate convenience and a variety of services at their doorstep, while still being able to arrange day trips to the natural attractions.

The city of Puerto Princesa is home to a diverse range of accommodations, from budget-friendly inns to more established hotels and resorts like Princesa Garden Island Resort and Spa, Balai Princesa, and Rooms R Us - Voyagers Palace. This variety ensures that travellers of all budgets can find a suitable place to stay. Its central location within Palawan makes it an excellent starting point for exploring the entire island, with easy access to transportation networks that connect to various tourist destinations, including the famous Underground River.

Tiniguiban

Tiniguiban, a district within Puerto Princesa, offers a more local and less tourist-centric environment, providing a glimpse into everyday Filipino life. It’s an area that appeals to travellers seeking an authentic experience, away from the main tourist thoroughfares. While it may not have the direct attractions of Sabang, its proximity to Puerto Princesa city proper means that essential services and transportation links are readily available, making it a practical base for exploring the region. The atmosphere is generally relaxed and community-oriented.

For visitors choosing Tiniguiban, the appeal lies in its authenticity and affordability. Accommodations like Southwind Palawan suggest a focus on providing comfortable stays at reasonable prices. This area is ideal for travellers who are comfortable navigating local neighbourhoods and are looking for a more immersive cultural experience. It’s a good option for those who want to experience the Philippines beyond the typical tourist trail, offering a chance to interact with locals and observe daily life in a genuine setting.

Concepcion

Concepcion, located within the Puerto Princesa area, presents a more laid-back and potentially coastal-focused experience, depending on its specific location within the district. It’s an area that might appeal to travellers looking for a quieter escape, possibly with access to less crowded beaches or natural areas. While not as prominently featured in tourist itineraries as Sabang, its presence in the hotel data, with establishments like Cooper's Beach Resort, indicates a potential for seaside relaxation and a more tranquil holiday.

Staying in Concepcion could be ideal for travellers who are seeking a more secluded getaway, perhaps for a longer stay where they can truly unwind. The availability of resorts suggests that amenities for relaxation and leisure are present. Access to Concepcion would likely involve travel from Puerto Princesa city, making it a destination for those who are willing to venture slightly off the beaten path to find a more peaceful and less commercialized environment, offering a different perspective on the Cabayugan region.

Travellers should seek out fresh seafood, often grilled or prepared in rich coconut milk-based sauces, a reflection of the Philippines' abundant marine resources. Don't miss trying local delicacies that showcase indigenous ingredients, providing a true taste of Palawan's distinct gastronomic identity.

For an authentic dining experience, exploring the local markets and smaller eateries in areas like Sabang and the central Cabayugan district is highly recommended. These spots often serve the freshest, most flavourful dishes at affordable prices. For Muslim travellers, while dedicated Halal restaurants might be scarce, seeking out establishments that clearly prepare seafood and vegetable dishes separately from pork can be a viable option. Always inquire politely about preparation methods to ensure dietary needs are met, and look for signs of local Muslim communities for potential recommendations.

The cost of dining in Cabayugan presents excellent value for international visitors. Street food and local eateries can offer delicious meals for as little as $2-5 USD per person. Showing respect for food and the people who prepare it is always appreciated, contributing to a more harmonious and enjoyable dining interaction.

Local Etiquette & Safety

Understanding local customs is key to a respectful and enriching visit to Cabayugan. Filipinos are known for their hospitality, often expressed through a warm and friendly demeanor. It's customary to greet elders with respect, using titles like "Ate" (older sister) or "Kuya" (older brother) for those perceived as older. When invited into someone's home, it's polite to bring a small gift. Public displays of affection are generally more reserved than in Western cultures, and it's advisable to dress modestly when visiting religious sites or more traditional communities.

When staying at accommodations like Kamalay Pension House or Dabdab Tourist Inn, general etiquette applies. Respect quiet hours, especially at night, to ensure a peaceful environment for all guests. Photography of people should always be done with permission. While not strictly enforced in tourist areas, dressing in smart casual attire for meals in more formal hotel restaurants is appreciated. Queueing is generally orderly, and patience is a virtue, especially during peak seasons or when dealing with local administrative processes.

Practical safety in Cabayugan is similar to other tourist destinations in the Philippines. While the region is generally safe, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. Keep valuables secure and avoid displaying large amounts of cash. For transportation, stick to reputable taxis or tricycles, and consider using ride-hailing apps like Grab if available in the area for transparent pricing. Familiarizing yourself with offline maps and essential contact numbers can provide an added layer of security during your explorations.

In case of emergencies, dial 117 for general assistance in the Philippines. For specific needs, local police numbers can be obtained from your accommodation. It's always advisable to have travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and unforeseen events. For Filipino travellers, checking the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) website for any travel advisories or specific guidance related to the region is a good practice. Staying informed and prepared ensures a safe and enjoyable trip to Cabayugan.
