I had a wonderful stay at Princesa Garden Island Resort on Christmas Eve! The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, ensuring a seamless check-in and a comfortable experience throughout. My room was clean, spacious, and well-equipped with all the necessary amenities. One of the highlights was the thoughtful gesture of giving a gift to our toddler, which made the holiday season even more special. The breakfast buffet and festive decorations added a cozy touch to our stay. I highly recommend this hotel and look forward to staying again in the future!

We had a pleasant stay at Panja Resort. The staff are friendly. The place is near Baker's Hill (one of the tourist spots included in the city tour), around 10-15 minutes' walk from the hotel. Mitra's Ranch is also near it, but we were not able to go there due to our time limit. They also have a free ride from and to Robinsons mall. You may want to check their schedules. Also, they have free airport transfer from the hotel (only).

The accommodation is worth the price. The room is clean and the front desk catered to our needs as expected. Staffs are approachable too. Breakfast is good though it's a small portion. It's okay though, we had a breakfast buffet on our last day there. There's also a free shuttle service going to the airport. All in all, it was a good experience.

It’s an ideal location for those who wish to escape the urban bustle and immerse themselves in a more serene environment, offering a genuine connection with the natural beauty of Palawan. Visitors here often seek a slower pace and a closer interaction with the local environment.

The appeal of Aborlan lies in its proximity to natural sites that might not be as widely advertised, offering a more off-the-beaten-path experience. While public transport might be less frequent than in more urbanized districts, local arrangements can often be made for transport to key points of interest or to connect with main routes. This area is perfect for travellers who enjoy hiking, exploring rural landscapes, or simply relaxing in a quiet setting. It provides a different perspective on the Simpocan region, focusing on its natural serenity.

What to Eat and Where to Find It in Simpocan

Simpocan's culinary landscape is a vibrant reflection of Filipino cuisine, offering a delightful array of flavours that are both familiar and uniquely Palawan. A must-try is Kinilaw, a local take on ceviche, where fresh raw fish is marinated in vinegar, calamansi juice, and spices, offering a zesty and refreshing start to any meal. For those seeking heartier fare, Adobo, the national dish of the Philippines, is a staple, with each household and eatery offering its own distinct variation. Exploring local markets will also reveal an abundance of fresh seafood, grilled to perfection and seasoned with local herbs and spices, providing an authentic taste of the region's bounty.

When it comes to dining locations, Simpocan offers a spectrum from bustling local markets to charming seaside eateries. Areas like San Pedro and the central Simpocan district are known for their diverse food stalls and local restaurants where you can sample authentic Filipino dishes at affordable prices. For travellers observing Halal dietary practices, it is advisable to inquire specifically about Halal-certified establishments or to seek out restaurants that can prepare dishes without pork, often focusing on chicken, beef, or seafood. While not as widespread as in other regions, finding Halal options is possible with careful inquiry and communication.

Mid-range restaurants typically charge between ₱400 to ₱800 (approximately $8 to $16 USD) per person for a full meal, including drinks. Upscale dining experiences, while less common, might reach ₱1,000 to ₱2,000 (approximately $20 to $40 USD) per person. Navigating dining etiquette in Simpocan is generally straightforward and reflects Filipino hospitality. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service, with a small amount (around 5-10%) being customary. It's polite to wait for your host or the eldest person at the table to begin eating. When dining at local eateries, using your hands (kamayan) for certain dishes is common and acceptable, especially with grilled seafood. Always use your right hand for eating and passing food. Familiarizing yourself with basic Filipino phrases for ordering and expressing thanks can greatly enhance your dining interactions.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Simpocan

Simpocan, like much of the Philippines, is characterized by a culture of warmth and hospitality, but understanding local customs can greatly enhance your visit. The concept of "Pakikisama," or smooth interpersonal relationships, is paramount, meaning politeness, respect, and avoiding confrontation are highly valued. When interacting with locals, a friendly demeanor and a smile go a long way. It's also common for Filipinos to be indirect in their communication to avoid causing offense, so be mindful of subtle cues and avoid being overly assertive or demanding.

When visiting Simpocan, dress modestly, especially when entering churches or more traditional communities. While beachwear is acceptable at resorts and beaches, it's advisable to cover up when exploring towns or villages. Always ask for permission before taking photographs of people, particularly elders or children, as this is considered a sign of respect. When invited into someone's home, it's customary to bring a small gift, such as fruits or pastries. Removing your shoes before entering a home is also a common practice.

For safety in Simpocan, general precautions applicable to many travel destinations should be followed. Keep your valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets or public transport. For transportation, utilize reputable taxi services or ride-hailing apps where available. While Simpocan is generally safe, it's always wise to have emergency contact numbers readily accessible. For international travellers, knowing the contact details for your respective embassy or consulate in the Philippines is crucial for any unforeseen circumstances.

In case of emergencies, dial 911 for immediate assistance in the Philippines. For specific concerns, local police hotlines can be found through your accommodation or local information centres. It is also recommended for Filipino travellers to be aware of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) advisories and to have contact information for the nearest Philippine Embassy or Consulate if they are overseas. Considering travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and trip disruptions is a prudent step for all visitors to Simpocan.

Getting to Simpocan and Getting Around

Reaching Simpocan from major Philippine hubs is primarily facilitated by air travel. Flights from Manila (NAIA/MNL) and Cebu (CEB) are the most common routes, typically connecting through Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS), which serves as the main gateway to the region. Direct flights are available from Manila, with a flight duration of approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Flights from Cebu may involve a layover. The cost of flights can vary significantly based on the season and how far in advance you book, but budget around ₱3,000 to ₱7,000 for a round trip. Upon arrival at Puerto Princesa Airport, you can arrange for transfers to Simpocan, which is about a 30-45 minute drive depending on your specific destination within the region. You can book flight tickets conveniently through Traveloka.

Navigating within Simpocan and its surrounding areas is an adventure in itself, offering a glimpse into local transportation culture. Tricycles are the most ubiquitous form of transport for short distances within towns and between neighbourhoods, offering a flexible and affordable way to get around. For longer distances or inter-neighbourhood travel, jeepneys are a cost-effective option, following set routes. Taxis are also available, particularly in the more developed areas, and it's advisable to agree on a fare before starting your journey. Renting a motorbike can provide more freedom for exploration, especially for those comfortable with local traffic conditions.

The best time to visit Simpocan generally falls within the dry season, from November to May. During these months, you can expect sunny skies and lower humidity, making it ideal for outdoor activities, beach visits, and exploring the natural attractions. The shoulder months of November and May often offer a good balance of pleasant weather and fewer crowds. The wet season, from June to October, brings higher rainfall, which can sometimes lead to disruptions in travel plans, though it also means fewer tourists and potentially lower accommodation prices.

Before departing for Simpocan, ensure you have the local currency, Philippine Peso (PHP), readily available. While major establishments might accept credit cards, smaller vendors and local transport often require cash. ATMs are available in Puerto Princesa and larger towns, but it's wise to carry some cash upon arrival. Consider purchasing a local SIM card at the airport for affordable data and calls, which is invaluable for navigation and communication. Essential apps include Google Maps for navigation, a translation app, and ride-hailing apps if available in the area.

Visa Information

For Philippine passport holders planning to visit Simpocan, which is within the Philippines, no visa is required as you are travelling domestically. However, it is essential to ensure your Philippine passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay, a standard requirement for all domestic travel and international travel. You will need to present your passport for identification purposes when checking into hotels, boarding flights, and at any checkpoints. It is always advisable to carry a photocopy of your passport separately from the original document.

While no visa is necessary for Filipino citizens travelling within the Philippines, it is crucial to be aware of any potential travel advisories or specific local regulations that may be in place. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) often issues travel advisories for certain regions within the Philippines, and it is prudent to check the latest information on their official website before your trip. Ensuring you have proof of onward travel, such as a return flight ticket, and sufficient funds for your stay, though not always strictly checked for domestic travel, can be beneficial.

As you are travelling domestically within the Philippines, the visa requirements for citizens of the United States, European countries, India, and African nations to enter the Philippines to reach Simpocan are the primary consideration. Most of these nationalities are granted visa-free entry for tourism purposes for a specific period, typically 30 days, which can sometimes be extended. However, policies can change, and it is imperative for all international travellers to verify the latest visa regulations with the Bureau of Immigration of the Philippines or the nearest Philippine Embassy or Consulate in their home country well in advance of booking their book flight.
