One of the best resort I have visited till now. The receptionists were really helpful and friendly. Great staff who knew how to serve the customer. The room was well equipped and the service was excellent. The scenery was beautiful and it was a relieve to walk in such a quiet and peaceful environment. I had a wonderful stay at Princesa Garden Island Resort on Christmas Eve! The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, ensuring a seamless check-in and a comfortable experience throughout. My room was clean, spacious, and well-equipped with all the necessary amenities. One of the highlights was the thoughtful gesture of giving a gift to our toddler, which made the holiday season even more special. The breakfast buffet and festive decorations added a cozy touch to our stay. I highly recommend this hotel and look forward to staying again in the future!

We had a pleasant stay at Panja Resort. The staff are friendly. The place is near Baker's Hill (one of the tourist spots included in the city tour), around 10-15 minutes' walk from the hotel. Mitra's Ranch is also near it, but we were not able to go there due to our time limit. They also have a free ride from and to Robinsons mall. You may want to check their schedules. Also, they have free airport transfer from the hotel (only).

The accommodation is worth the price. The room is clean and the front desk catered to our needs as expected. Staffs are approachable too. Breakfast is good though it's a small portion. It's okay though, we had a breakfast buffet on our last day there. There's also a free shuttle service going to the airport. All in all, it was a good experience.

More about hotels in San Rafael

San Rafael: A Philippine Region of Diverse Charms for the Global Explorer

San Rafael, a captivating region within the Philippines, offers a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and accessible adventure that appeals to a broad spectrum of international travellers. Unlike the bustling metropolises or the more heavily touristed islands, San Rafael presents a more authentic and intimate glimpse into Filipino life, complemented by a growing infrastructure that caters to discerning visitors from around the globe. Its appeal lies in its ability to provide both serene escapes and engaging activities, making it a destination that can be tailored to individual preferences, whether one seeks relaxation by the coast or exploration of local heritage.

The region's distinctiveness is amplified by its varied neighbourhoods, each offering a different facet of the San Rafael experience. From the resort-centric vibe of San Rafael itself, to the more residential feel of Bancao-Bancao, the emerging hubs in San Pedro, and the coastal allure of areas like Aborlan and Tiniguiban, the choice of where to base oneself significantly shapes the journey. Even within the broader Puerto Princesa area, districts such as Concepcion and San Manuel provide unique local flavours. Understanding these nuances allows travellers to craft an itinerary that perfectly aligns with their interests, whether it's proximity to attractions or a desire for a quieter, more local immersion.

For international visitors, San Rafael presents exceptional value, with an average nightly hotel rate of approximately ₱ 3,037.28 and an impressive overall review score of 8.9 from over 426 guest experiences. This positions San Rafael as a highly competitive destination when compared to many international locales, offering a high standard of accommodation and services at a price point that is particularly attractive to travellers from the United States, Europe, and India. The affordability does not compromise quality, but rather enhances the overall travel experience, allowing for extended stays or the exploration of more activities without significant budget strain.

The accommodation landscape in San Rafael is as varied as its geography, featuring properties that cater to different tastes and budgets. For instance, Astoria Palawan stands out as a premier resort option, offering extensive amenities and a prime location, while Sunlight Guest Hotel Puerto Princesa provides a well-regarded mid-range choice known for its service and accessibility. These establishments, among others, represent the quality and diversity available, ensuring that travellers can find a comfortable and suitable place to stay. For those ready to plan their trip, exploring these options is the first step to a memorable visit, and you can easily book hotel accommodations that fit your needs.

San Rafael is a destination that truly caters to a global audience. For American travellers, it offers a chance to experience Southeast Asian hospitality with a distinct Filipino flavour, away from the more crowded tourist trails. European visitors will appreciate the blend of natural landscapes and the opportunity to engage with local culture and history. Indian travellers will find the region offers excellent value, with good connectivity and a diverse culinary scene that can accommodate various preferences. For travellers from African nations, San Rafael provides a gateway to the unique beauty and warmth of the Philippines, offering a different yet equally rewarding travel experience.

Best Areas to Stay in San Rafael

San Rafael is not a monolithic destination; rather, it is a region comprised of distinct neighbourhoods and districts, each possessing its own unique character and appeal. For international visitors, understanding these differences is key to selecting the ideal base for their stay. Whether you prioritize proximity to major attractions, a tranquil beachfront setting, or a lively local atmosphere, choosing the right neighbourhood in San Rafael can significantly enhance your travel experience and ensure you discover the facets of the region that resonate most with you.

San Rafael

The eponymous district of San Rafael serves as a primary hub for many visitors, largely due to the presence of significant resorts and attractions. This area offers a well-developed tourist infrastructure, making it an accessible and convenient choice for those seeking a comfortable and amenity-rich stay. International travellers, particularly those from Western countries, often find the blend of resort-style living and proximity to key sites like the Palawan Waterpark by Astoria appealing. It provides a familiar yet distinctly Filipino environment for relaxation and recreation.

Staying in San Rafael district places you within easy reach of popular leisure facilities and offers a good starting point for exploring the wider region. The area is well-connected, with transport options readily available to ferry you to other parts of Puerto Princesa and beyond. For those looking to experience the best of San Rafael's attractions without venturing too far from their accommodation, this district is an excellent choice. It’s also a good base for those who wish to book attractions and tours in advance.

Bancao-Bancao

Bancao-Bancao presents a more serene and upscale atmosphere, often favoured by travellers seeking a peaceful retreat with access to quality accommodations and services. This neighbourhood is known for its well-appointed resorts and hotels that offer a higher degree of privacy and exclusivity. It appeals to international visitors who appreciate refined comfort and a tranquil environment, providing a stark contrast to the more bustling tourist zones. The area’s charm lies in its ability to offer a relaxing escape while still being conveniently located for accessing the region's natural beauty.

From Bancao-Bancao, visitors can easily access various natural attractions and enjoy local dining experiences. The neighbourhood itself often features beautiful grounds and amenities that encourage guests to unwind on-site. For those arriving by air, it's a relatively straightforward transfer from the airport, making it a practical choice for a relaxed start to a Philippine holiday. The area’s quietude makes it particularly suitable for couples or families looking for a peaceful base.

San Pedro

San Pedro is a dynamic district that offers a vibrant mix of local life and developing tourist facilities, making it an interesting choice for travellers who want to experience a more authentic slice of San Rafael. This area is characterized by its local communities, smaller guesthouses, and a growing number of eateries that serve traditional Filipino cuisine. It’s a neighbourhood that appeals to budget-conscious travellers, backpackers, and those seeking a more immersive cultural experience, offering a glimpse into everyday life in the Philippines.

The accessibility of San Pedro to various points of interest, including potential day trips and local markets, makes it a practical base. While it may not boast the large-scale resorts of other areas, it offers a more intimate and personal travel experience. Visitors can explore local shops, sample authentic street food, and interact with residents, gaining a deeper understanding of the region. Its location often provides good access to transportation networks for onward travel.

Aborlan

Aborlan, situated a bit further out, offers a more secluded and natural setting, appealing to travellers who are drawn to pristine beaches and a quieter, more untouched environment. This area is ideal for those looking to disconnect and immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Palawan, away from the more developed tourist centres. It’s a destination for the adventurous and nature-loving international visitor, offering a chance to experience coastal life in a more laid-back and authentic manner. The allure here is the unspoiled landscape and the tranquility it provides.

Accommodation in Aborlan often leans towards charming guesthouses and smaller resorts that emphasize a connection with nature. The area is perfect for activities such as beachcombing, swimming, and simply enjoying the coastal scenery. Its relative remoteness means that visitors here are often seeking a peaceful escape, and the journey to Aborlan, while requiring a bit more travel time from the main airport, rewards travellers with a sense of discovery and serenity. It’s a place to truly unwind and appreciate the simple beauty of the Philippines.

Tiniguiban

Tiniguiban offers a blend of local community living and developing tourist amenities, presenting a balanced experience for visitors. This district is known for its residential areas interspersed with guesthouses and smaller establishments, providing a more grounded feel compared to heavily commercialized zones. It’s a good option for travellers who appreciate a more local atmosphere and are looking for affordable accommodation while still having access to essential services and transport links. The neighbourhood provides a genuine sense of place for those who wish to explore beyond the typical tourist path.

From Tiniguiban, travellers can easily access various parts of Puerto Princesa and its surrounding attractions. The area’s local markets and eateries offer opportunities to sample authentic Filipino food at reasonable prices. Its accessibility makes it a convenient base for day trips and exploring the region's natural and cultural sites. For international visitors, Concepcion offers a chance to see a less commercialized side of San Rafael, with accommodations that are often more intimate and personal. This district is suitable for those who prefer a quieter stay and are interested in experiencing the local culture firsthand, away from the main tourist crowds.

The proximity of Concepcion to certain coastal attractions and its local eateries make it a practical choice for visitors. While it may require a bit more planning for transport to major sites, it rewards travellers with a more authentic and less hurried experience. It’s a place where one can enjoy the local ambiance and perhaps discover hidden spots that offer a unique perspective on the region. The area is well-suited for travellers who value authenticity and a slower travel pace.

San Manuel

This district is characterized by its local neighbourhoods, offering a more grounded experience of Filipino life. It’s an area that appeals to travellers who are looking for a more authentic and less tourist-centric environment, where they can observe and engage with the local community. The charm of San Manuel lies in its everyday atmosphere and the genuine interactions it can offer.

For international visitors, exploring these local tastes is an integral part of the travel experience, providing a delicious insight into the local way of life and the warmth of Filipino hospitality.

The culinary journey in San Rafael is best experienced by venturing into its local markets and neighbourhood eateries, particularly in areas like San Rafael and San Pedro, which are known for their authentic food scenes. While specific Halal-certified restaurants might require advance research, many local eateries are accommodating, and fresh seafood is widely available. For international travellers, the cost of dining in San Rafael offers excellent value. Street food and local eateries can provide a filling meal for as little as ₱ 100-200 (approximately $2-4 USD), while mid-range restaurants typically charge between ₱ 400-800 (approximately $8-16 USD) per person for a complete meal. Even upscale dining experiences remain considerably more affordable than in many Western countries, with a fine dining experience costing around ₱ 1,500-2,500 (approximately $30-50 USD) per person, allowing visitors to savour diverse flavours without breaking the bank.

When dining in San Rafael, embracing local customs enhances the experience. Meals are typically enjoyed at a relaxed pace, and it's customary to use utensils like a spoon and fork, with hands often used for eating rice and certain dishes. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for exceptional service, usually around 10%. Navigating the cultural landscape of San Rafael requires an understanding of local customs and etiquette, which are rooted in Filipino values of respect, hospitality, and community. While generally a welcoming place for international visitors, being aware of certain norms can prevent misunderstandings and foster more meaningful interactions. Observing local behaviour, particularly in more traditional neighbourhoods, and adopting a polite and respectful demeanour will go a long way in ensuring a positive experience.

When visiting popular sites like the Palawan Waterpark by Astoria or the Anilawan Elementary School area, it's advisable to dress modestly, especially when not in designated swimming areas. While casual attire is common, overly revealing clothing might be considered inappropriate in some settings. Photography is generally permitted, but it's always courteous to ask for permission before taking pictures of individuals, particularly children. Understanding and respecting these local customs will contribute to a smoother and more enjoyable visit.

For specific tourist concerns, local police or tourism offices can provide assistance. While San Rafael is within the Philippines, it's always wise for international travellers to have the contact details for their respective embassies or consulates in the Philippines, and to consider travel insurance for unforeseen medical needs or emergencies.
