Your Travel Guide to Manila as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Manila from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For travelers coming from other parts of the Philippines, flying into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila is the most common and efficient method. Major airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia operate frequent flights from key cities such as Cebu, Davao, and Palawan. Fares can range from PHP 2,000 to PHP 8,000 or more, depending on the origin city, airline, and how far in advance you book flight tickets.

For those traveling from nearby Luzon provinces, bus travel is a more economical option. Numerous bus terminals in Metro Manila serve routes from Northern and Southern Luzon. For example, buses from Baguio typically take 4-6 hours and cost around PHP 500-PHP 800. Buses from Naga City in Bicol can take 8-10 hours with fares around PHP 800-PHP 1,200.

Driving to Manila is also feasible for those coming from accessible regions. Major expressways like the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) connect to the city. Toll fees will apply, varying based on the distance traveled. For instance, a trip from Pampanga might incur around PHP 300-PHP 500 in toll fees, plus fuel costs.

Best Time to Visit Manila

The ideal time to visit Manila for most Filipino travelers is during the cooler, dry season, which typically runs from November to April. During these months, the weather is generally pleasant, with lower humidity and less frequent rainfall, making it more comfortable for exploring the city's outdoor attractions and historical sites. Temperatures usually range from 24°C to 32°C.

The period from May to October is the wet season, characterized by higher humidity and the possibility of typhoons and heavy rains. While you might find fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices during this time, it's essential to be prepared for weather disruptions. Traveling during the dry season offers a more predictable and comfortable experience for sightseeing.

Food and Dining Near Manila — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Manila is complete without indulging in classic Filipino dishes. Adobo, a savory dish of meat braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and black peppercorns, is a national favorite. You can find excellent versions in many local eateries and even in Hotel H2O's restaurant. Its tangy and salty profile is a true taste of home.

Sinigang, a sour and savory soup, is another must-try, often made with tamarind broth and your choice of meat or seafood, along with various vegetables. The comforting warmth and distinct sourness are perfect for any weather. Look for it in traditional Filipino restaurants around the Malate area, not far from your hotel.

For a taste of street food culture, try Balut, a fertilized duck egg, a delicacy for the adventurous. While it might seem daunting, it's a popular local snack. For something less challenging, explore the vibrant flavors of La Paz Batchoy, a hearty noodle soup with pork and vegetables, originating from Iloilo but widely enjoyed in Manila.

Don't forget to sample Halo-Halo for dessert, a refreshing mix of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, and topped with leche flan and ube ice cream. It's the ultimate Filipino cooler, perfect for Manila's warm climate. Many cafes and restaurants offer their own unique take on this beloved treat.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Manila

Filipino culture is known for its warmth and hospitality. Greetings are important; a simple "Magandang umaga/hapon/gabi" (Good morning/afternoon/evening) goes a long way. When visiting churches or more traditional establishments, dress modestly out of respect. Always ask for permission before taking photos of people.

Manila is generally safe for tourists, but like any large city, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings. Avoid displaying expensive items openly, and be cautious of petty theft in crowded areas. Keep your valuables secure and be mindful of your belongings, especially in public transport and busy markets. For emergencies, dial 117 for the general emergency hotline.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable navigation app like Google Maps is crucial for getting around. Ride-sharing apps such as Grab are widely used and offer a convenient way to book transportation. For communication, WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger are popular among locals.

This hotel is connected to an amusement park, so if you are looking for solitude…this is not the place. In addition, one elevator was in operation so there is along wait. So many amenities were not working. Room service - not available. Hotel bar - not available. Limited restaurant eating options. Valet for luggage pick up took over 15 minutes. Cannot charge food to room - due to computer issues.

The room was lovely with a good view. Bed was comfy but broken. The air conditioner worked great, so the room stayed cool. The shower drain was blocked, so I had to be careful. There was accessible cold/hot filtered water. Staff were helpful, prompt and kind. The website needs to be updated as there are no airport transfers or room service. Grab was a lifesaver for transport and food delivery. The location was perfect for the biodome and other such activities.

checking in was a horrible .I waited downstairs at the entry for approximately 30 minutes for someone to show up to help me with my baggage. finally after the security fellow called up several times a gentleman in security uniform indicted he would get the luggage to me and I went upstairs to check in .I checked in and went to the room and the wife worked intermittently for the entire evening .it was horrible. I called th reception over and over and over again but no one answers .then gave me a little slip with a whats app number as well which I couldn't call because the wifi was constanlty not working .I then finally connected and nd in the morning 2 gentlemen came to the room and bought a modem and connected it .that too did not work after a while so two days I doid not have wifi and im so upset because you need that for flight bookings and receiving and decemminating information .this issue alone would dissuade me from booking a room there again

Their phone system and wifi system brokedown for the length of my stay. what an inconvenience. We had to go to reception personally to request for minor things lIke, toilet paper, etc. They apologize for the inconcenience, but they never offered any compensation for the inconvenience we suffered
