Your Travel Guide to Cebu City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Cebu City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For convenient booking, book flight tickets through Traveloka and compare fares across major airlines.

For most Filipino travelers, flying is the most convenient way to reach Cebu City. Direct flights from Manila (MNL) to Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB) are frequent, with travel times averaging around 1 hour and 15 minutes. Airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia offer numerous daily flights. You can often find competitive fares, especially if you book in advance or during promotional periods.

When booking your flight, consider using Traveloka to compare prices and find the best deals. Fares from Manila can range from PHP 2,000 to PHP 5,000 or more, depending on the season and how far in advance you book. Other major cities in the Philippines, such as Davao, Cagayan de Oro, and Iloilo, also have direct flight connections to Cebu, making it an accessible destination from various parts of the archipelago.

While less common for longer distances, bus travel is an option for those coming from nearby Visayan islands or if you prefer a more scenic, albeit much longer, journey. Ferries are also a popular mode of transport for inter-island travel, connecting Cebu to numerous other islands. For those driving their own vehicles, well-maintained highways connect Cebu to other parts of Luzon and the Visayas, though this involves multiple ferry crossings and can take several days.

Best Time to Visit Cebu City

Cebu City enjoys a tropical climate year-round, meaning you can expect warm temperatures and humidity regardless of when you visit. The dry season, typically from December to May, is generally considered the best time to visit for outdoor activities and beach excursions, as there is less rainfall. During these months, the weather is usually sunny and pleasant, perfect for exploring the city's attractions and nearby islands.

The wet season runs from June to November, characterized by more frequent rain showers, which can sometimes be heavy but are often short-lived. Despite the rain, this period can also be a good time to visit, especially if you are looking for fewer crowds and potentially lower accommodation prices. The rain doesn't usually disrupt travel plans significantly, and you can still enjoy many of the city's indoor attractions and cultural sites.

For a balance of good weather and manageable crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder months, such as November or May. These periods often offer pleasant weather without the peak season influx of tourists. Regardless of when you choose to visit, Cebu City offers a rich cultural experience and numerous activities for every type of traveler.

Food and Dining Near Cebu City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Cebu is renowned for its culinary scene, offering a delightful array of flavors that reflect its rich heritage. A must-try dish is the Cebuano Lechon, often hailed as the best in the Philippines. Unlike other versions, Cebu lechon is typically seasoned with a mix of herbs and spices, giving it a distinct and savory taste. You can find excellent lechon stalls and restaurants throughout the city, with Rico's Lechon and CNT Lechon being popular choices.

Another local delicacy that captures the essence of Cebuano cuisine is Kinilaw. This dish is the Filipino version of ceviche, featuring raw fish (often tuna or tanigue) marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili peppers. It’s a refreshing and zesty appetizer, perfect for the tropical climate. Many local eateries and even higher-end restaurants serve their own unique take on this classic dish.

For those with a sweet tooth, Halo-Halo is a beloved Filipino dessert that is particularly popular in Cebu. This icy concoction is a delightful mix of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, and topped with leche flan and ube ice cream. It’s the perfect way to cool down and satisfy your cravings after a day of exploring. You'll find numerous stalls and cafes offering this delightful treat.

Don't leave Cebu without trying Dried Mangoes, a famous pasalubong (souvenir) that many Filipinos and tourists love to bring home. These sweet and chewy mangoes are a taste of the Philippines' abundant tropical fruits. You can purchase them in various forms, from soft and chewy to crispy, at local markets and souvenir shops. They make for a perfect gift or a personal treat.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Cebu City

Cebuano culture is a blend of indigenous traditions, Spanish colonial influences, and modern Filipino life. The people are known for their warmth and hospitality. When interacting with locals, a polite greeting and a smile go a long way. While English is widely spoken, learning a few basic Cebuano phrases like "Maayong adlaw" (Good day) can be appreciated.

Safety in Cebu City is generally comparable to other major urban centers in the Philippines. It's advisable to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas, and to secure your belongings. Avoid displaying expensive items openly and be cautious of petty theft. For emergencies, the national emergency hotline is 911. It's also wise to have the contact numbers of your embassy or consulate readily available.

For seamless travel, consider downloading a few essential apps. Grab is indispensable for ride-hailing and food delivery, making transportation and dining convenient. Google Maps is crucial for navigation, helping you find your way around the city and its attractions. For communication, WhatsApp or Messenger are widely used by Filipinos. Having these apps on your smartphone will greatly enhance your travel experience in Cebu.

Please do not waste your time here. Don’t be deceived with their photos. This place is terrible. Communication is terrible, place is hot as an oven because A/C does not work well, staff are hard to reach because cellular signal is very weak inside so you have to go outside just to call for help from them and you have to be bounced at 3 different staff to contact on one simple issue like the wifi password. I left the property because of the inconvenience and requested a refund but they refuse to pay me back even though i never stayed for more than 5minutes in this property. It is a trap to steal your money. They told me I booked my reservation from expedia even though i booked it through hotels.com —just realize how they’re mismanaging this business. Stay away.

First: We were not able to stay at Kara’s Condotel, not even a minute. We physically went to the property the day BEFORE our reservation because all their phones were down. Even Expedia can not reach them. Try it! It’s January 5, 2022 today. We found out that this place DO NOT have water, electricity and WiFi as stated in the Expedia website and as was stated on the Expedia receipt itinerary. It took me about 7 agents via chat with Expedia and via phone call with Expedia at 1800 397 3342, to finally get processed our refund today! I did not hit the cancel button on the Expedia automatic chat because the fine line states that when you hit the cancel button that you understand that there won’t be a refund. Now, why would I spend money on a place that says they have WiFi, water and electricity BUT there is none? And we wasted our time on this place that we almost lucked out on a hotel that ACTUALLY has those basic amenities! Luckily, we were able to find a different one that has all those BASIC amenities. Kara’s Condotel messaged me that they still open their doors for those people who just needed roof who are okey WITHOUT water, WiFi , electricity. And they (Kara’s Condotel) saidcannot initiate refund right away upon our request because they needed until our reservation date ends. And I spoke to Expedia, this wasn’t the case at all. Kara’s Condotel gave me a run around! And these are FACTS! I hope your experience with Kara’s Condotel would be a pleasant one. Mine was NOT!

Room is quite dark but is okay if you will just sleep and need many beds. Area is quite hard to go to. No commutes, but only taxis and grab.

When we arrived, they did not have the type room that was advertised and reserved! Stated it was unavailable! Tried to put us in a run down dump!! The owner stated he would contact Expedia and refund my money! I had to make reservations at another location! Expedia contacted the property and was told by the owner that he would not refund the money, Evan though it was not our fault!! This place is a ripoff, fraud plane and simple! Don’t reserve there, you will be very unhappy with the conditions of the type room they really have! Not what is advertised or shown in the photos!!! Expedia should do a better job of trying to protect there customers when this type fraud occurs! Over all, lesson learned, stand there and make sure they reimburse you while you have Expedia on the line, so what they say actually happens!! Avoid this place if you want to have a smooth vacation or stay!!!!

we celebrated christmas here but our kids did not enjoy because we are there to relax but the pool was not available monday morning.Swimming was the main reason why we are there. we are expecting bigger rooms as what the web showed but its obvious that smaller rooms were given to us granting that we got big discounts.anyway, through christmas spirit its just ok and in fairness to the unit, it was so nice. no hassle upon check in and check out. what we admired most is the caretaker of the unit. She wants to carry all our heavy bags but all of us disagree. The guards too really did there job. i can recommend this hotel to anyone.thanks to expedia.

是經濟型住房不能要求太高,但該有的都有,只是偏遠一點了,交通比較不方便,但我們家庭旅遊人多包計程車來回跳表也還算合理價格

It was a perfect place for us to stay - close to the mall and accessible to taxis. The caretaker is very polite and was always ready in assisting us with our needs.

Stay away.

It was perfect for our valentines date the area is amazingly suitable for a quiet relaxed and comfortable stay. We had the chance to stroll safely within the premises at night while jogging early mornings.

The service was okay but people and staff are very hard to contact. Guards were really helpful though. Food is also okay but takes time before it’s served. Need to cooperate closely. Room is quite dark but is okay if you will just sleep and need many beds. Area is quite hard to go to. No commutes, but only taxis and grab.
