Your Travel Guide to Baguio City as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Baguio City from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

Traveling to Baguio City from Manila is a popular route for many Filipinos. The most common way is by bus, with several companies like Victory Liner and Genesis Transport operating from terminals in Cubao and Pasay. The journey typically takes 4 to 6 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions, with fares ranging from PHP 700 to PHP 1,000 for regular or executive services.

For those who prefer flying, you can book flight to Clark International Airport (CRK) and then take a bus or van to Baguio, which adds about 2-3 hours to the travel time but can be faster overall.

Driving your own vehicle offers flexibility. From Metro Manila, you can take the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and then the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) towards Tarlac, eventually connecting to the TPLEX and then the MacArthur Highway leading to Baguio. The drive is approximately 250 kilometers and can take around 4 to 5 hours without significant traffic. Be prepared for toll fees, which can add up, and the winding mountain roads as you approach Baguio.

For travelers coming from other major Philippine cities like Cebu or Davao, flying is the most practical option. You would typically book a flight to Manila or Clark and then proceed with bus travel to Baguio. Some airlines might offer direct flights to Baguio's nearest airport, Loakan Airport, but these are less frequent and often more expensive. Planning your connections in advance is key to a smooth journey.

Best Time to Visit Baguio City

Baguio City experiences a generally cool climate year-round, making it a pleasant destination anytime. However, the best time to visit for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which runs from November to May. During these months, the weather is cooler and less prone to heavy rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the city's attractions. The peak season, especially around Christmas, New Year, and the Panagbenga Festival in February, sees higher tourist numbers and accommodation prices.

For those who prefer fewer crowds and potentially lower prices, the shoulder months of November and May can be excellent choices. You'll still enjoy pleasant weather, but with a more relaxed atmosphere. The rainy season, from June to October, brings lush greenery and a more dramatic, misty ambiance, but be prepared for frequent downpours, which might limit outdoor activities. If you don't mind the rain and want to experience Baguio's moody charm, this period can also be rewarding.

Food and Dining Near Baguio City — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Baguio City is a culinary delight, offering a range of flavors that appeal to Filipino palates. A must-try is the Baguio Strawberry Taho, a local twist on the classic Filipino snack, featuring fresh strawberries blended into the silken tofu mixture. You can find vendors selling this refreshing treat in popular spots like Burnham Park and Mines View Park. It’s a perfect cool-down snack on a slightly warmer day.

Another local specialty is Pinikpikan, a traditional Cordilleran dish. This hearty soup involves a unique preparation method that results in tender chicken and a rich, flavorful broth. While the preparation might sound unusual, the taste is deeply satisfying and comforting, especially in Baguio's cool weather. Many local eateries and restaurants in Baguio serve authentic Pinikpikan.

Don't leave Baguio without trying their famous Strawberry Jam and Ube Jam. These sweet preserves are made from locally sourced ingredients and are perfect as pasalubong (souvenirs) for family and friends. You can find these jams in local markets, souvenir shops, and even some bakeries. Enjoy them with pandesal or as a filling for pastries.

For a more substantial meal, consider trying Wagyu Burgers or other dishes at restaurants that source local produce. The cooler climate and fertile soil of Benguet contribute to high-quality ingredients. Exploring the dining scene near Le Monet Hotel, you'll discover various cafes and restaurants offering both local and international cuisine, ensuring a diverse culinary experience for every traveler.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Baguio City

Baguio City is known for its friendly and respectful local culture. When interacting with residents, a polite demeanor and a smile go a long way. It's customary to greet elders with "po" and "opo" as a sign of respect. Stick to well-lit and populated areas, especially at night. If you encounter any issues, the local police can be reached at their emergency hotline. It's also a good idea to have the hotel's contact information readily available.

Ride-sharing apps are also available and can be a convenient way to travel between locations. For communication, messaging apps like WhatsApp or Viber are widely used by Filipinos. Having these tools on your smartphone will enhance your travel experience.

Our view was obstructed by this. The room smelled like paint because of the renovations. The paint fumes caused headache. I was charged again for my son's breakfast when I already declared him booking here on app. The towels were smelly.

We started our stay on a sour note with this hotel, there were hiccups at the onset of checking in. The manager though made efforts to make our stay comfortable at the end, thus we’re giving a good rating. There are no jeeps plying this area of Baguio so if you plan to go to downtown a lot, you’d have to hail a cab or walk about 700-800 meters (down Concentrix area) in order to take public transport. Walking distance to the Manor Hotel and Mile Hi stores. Breakfast was okay, with ample choices. Bed was comfortable. We turned on the AC even if it was raining just because we want to. The toilet was great with several options (much like Japanese toilets) We did not use the swimming pool because it was not heated as advertised. If we are to be back in Baguio, I would book a room in the downtown area. Just because we usually go to Baguio for the night market and the public market And oh, the lift’s inspection papers need to be renewed as it expired in 2018!!

Staff are helpful and polite. However, the photo of the room we booked in the app is different from the room assigned to us. In the photo, it has a bathtub, the very reason why I booked the room despite being pricey. But upon checking in, it only has a shower area, no bathtub. Also, the food served in the buffet were not properly maintained warm.

The rooms seems ok but there had been couple of things that makes us unsatisfied with our stay. One of this is the water interruption, TV channels are very limited, internet connection is slow, elevator near swimming pool is not working at the 3rd floor where we stayed. The breakfast doesn't have a lot of food choices.

Perfect for a business traveler like me. Wifi signal is strong even from the bedrooms. Clean and comfortable beds though room is too big for a solo traveler. I love the heated toilet seat. Request for a forest view room with minimal charge & enjoy the John Hay view. Very helpful staff. Wide selection from their buffet breakfast. Handy phone amenity on the rooms - free local calls and mobile data from this phone! This is the first hotel with Handy phones in Bagio, it was worth it! Will definitely go back.

Our view was obstructed by this. The room smelled like paint because of the renovations. The paint fumes caused headache. I was charged again for my son's breakfast when I already declared him booking here on app. The towels were smelly.

Location is very quiet and peaceful. There 's a trail nearby for morning walks or jog. Staff are awesome. Room is very clean and has balcony facing the forest. Definitely the hotel to book when going to Camp John Hay in Baguio.

It was just ok for me. There was a used hotel slippers under the bed. The lobby is small and a bit cramped.

The room was not exactly like in the pictures posted. For one, the bathtub was not present. But overall, the room was nice and very relaxing.

Our room was facing the street which had nonstop traffic all throughout the night. Couldn’t sleep because of the noise.

It’s proximity to the places I like to visit, the hospitality of the hotel staff, the amenities and the value for money are among the few reasons why I will continue to choose this hotel whenever I come to Baguio. And also love their breakfast buffet...
