Your Travel Guide to Makati as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Makati from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For travelers coming from other parts of the Philippines, flying into Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Metro Manila is the most common method. Major airlines like Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia Philippines operate frequent flights from various provincial capitals. Fares can range from PHP 2,000 to PHP 6,000 for a round trip, depending on the origin city and how far in advance you book your flight. From NAIA, you can take a taxi or a ride-sharing service directly to Makati, which typically costs between PHP 300 to PHP 500 and takes about 30-45 minutes, traffic permitting.

If you are traveling from nearby provinces like Pampanga, Bulacan, or Laguna, taking a bus is a more economical option. Numerous bus terminals in Metro Manila serve routes to Makati. For instance, buses from the North can alight at terminals near Cubao or Pasay, from where you can transfer to a bus or jeepney heading to Makati. Buses from the South might arrive at terminals closer to the city center. Bus fares generally range from PHP 200 to PHP 400, with travel times varying significantly based on traffic and origin.

For those driving from Luzon, expressways like the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) and the North Luzon Expressway (NLUX) provide access to Metro Manila. From SLEX, you can take the Skyway or exit at Magallanes Interchange to reach Makati. Driving offers flexibility but be prepared for potential traffic congestion, especially during peak hours. Toll fees can add up, so factor this into your budget. Using navigation apps is highly recommended for a smoother driving experience.

Best Time to Visit Makati

Makati City experiences a tropical climate, with distinct wet and dry seasons. The best time to visit for most Filipino travelers is during the dry season, which typically runs from November to April. During these months, the weather is generally sunny and less humid, with average temperatures ranging from 25°C to 32°C. This period is ideal for outdoor activities, exploring the city's attractions, and enjoying its vibrant street life without the interruption of heavy rainfall.

The cooler months within the dry season, from November to February, are particularly pleasant. While it's still warm, the humidity is lower, making it more comfortable for sightseeing and shopping. The peak tourist season often coincides with this period, especially around the Christmas holidays and Holy Week. If you prefer fewer crowds and potentially better hotel rates, consider visiting during the shoulder months of the dry season, such as late October or early May, though you might encounter occasional rain showers.

The wet season, from May to October, brings frequent rain showers and occasional typhoons. While this period can be less ideal for extensive outdoor exploration, it offers a different perspective of the city, often with fewer tourists and lower accommodation prices. If your visit falls during these months, it's advisable to have a flexible itinerary and be prepared for indoor activities, such as visiting museums, shopping malls, and enjoying the hotel's amenities.

Food and Dining Near Makati — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No culinary journey in the Philippines is complete without savoring Adobo. This iconic dish, typically made with chicken or pork braised in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, and peppercorns, offers a perfect balance of savory and tangy flavors. Many restaurants in Makati serve their own versions, from traditional to contemporary twists. Look for establishments that highlight slow-cooking methods for tender, flavorful meat.

Another Filipino favorite you must try is Sinigang, a sour and savory soup, usually made with tamarind broth, meat (pork, beef, or fish), and a variety of vegetables like kangkong, radish, and tomatoes. The sourness is incredibly refreshing, especially on a warm day. Many local eateries and even some upscale restaurants in Makati offer this comforting soup, providing a taste of home for many Filipinos and an authentic experience for visitors.

For those seeking a hearty and flavorful meal, Kare-Kare is a must. This rich stew features oxtail, tripe, and vegetables simmered in a thick, savory peanut sauce. It's traditionally served with bagoong (fermented shrimp paste) on the side, which adds a salty counterpoint to the sweetness of the sauce. Finding a well-prepared Kare-Kare in Makati can be a delightful discovery, offering a complex and satisfying dining experience.

Crispy Pata, deep-fried pork knuckle, is another indulgence that Filipino travelers often seek out. The exterior is rendered to a perfect crisp, while the meat inside remains tender and juicy. It's typically served with a soy-vinegar dipping sauce. While it might seem indulgent, sharing a Crispy Pata is a popular way to enjoy a celebratory meal with friends or family in many Makati dining spots.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Makati

Filipinos are known for their hospitality and respect for elders. When interacting with locals, using polite language like "po" and "opo" is appreciated. It's also customary to remove your shoes before entering someone's home. While Makati is generally a safe city, especially in well-trafficked areas, it's always wise to be aware of your surroundings, particularly in crowded places, to avoid petty theft.

For safety, keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items openly. It's advisable to use reputable transportation services like taxis hailed from designated stands or trusted ride-sharing apps. In case of emergencies, the general emergency number in the Philippines is 911. For specific local police assistance in Makati, you can contact their hotline.

To enhance your travel experience in Makati, several mobile applications can be very useful. Ride-sharing apps like Grab are essential for convenient and relatively affordable transportation around the city. Navigation apps such as Google Maps or Waze are indispensable for finding your way through Makati's streets and avoiding traffic. For dining recommendations and reviews, apps like Zomato or TripAdvisor can help you discover local eateries and popular restaurants.

Consider downloading a currency converter app if you plan to shop extensively or are unfamiliar with the Philippine Peso. Additionally, a translation app can be helpful if you encounter situations where communication might be a barrier, although English is widely spoken in Makati. Staying connected with a local SIM card or an international roaming plan is also recommended for easy communication and access to these helpful tools.

Room was clean and spacious but bed, furnitures, and appliances are outdated. The elevators were manually operated the whole time - need some repair. The staff is the best asset of this place. We included the breakfast option as we’ve done on previous stays but it has changed. The previous buffet at the restaurant has changed to room service. We did not have the option to select what to eat or drink and food is already cold when delivered. Quality and taste were bad. We tried to cancel breakfast after the first day but we were told they have no control over it since we booked thru Expedia. The breakfast package is not worth the price. I hope you consider a refund because we were not able to eat most ot it.

Coakroach in the room. Then they could not find my booking and had to book twice. My booking company refunded me as they would not. Very rude and stubborn hotel. Elevator is not working at this time. Have to phone to get down.

Hallway has dead cockroaches and nobody dared take them out. Room furnitures are old and have stains, sometimes, it smell like a sewer in some days. We were given room on the 10th floor on the first day but elevators are not working, need to call for the elevator to go on our floor and most of the time, you need to go down or Up one floor if you need to go down as elevator not working on the 10th floor. Staff are really nice and very accommodating but it is sad how the place was not maintained at all. Location is really good though. Maybe a change in management is the key. Their staff are really good and kudos that they maintained their demeanor the whole time we were there.

The room had a weird oder when i checked in. The elevator you are required to call the main lobby to have come to your floor. Also keep money on you since you need to put a 2000PHP security deposit even for just a day which basically cost more than 1 night. Other than that id say the area is probably the best thing about it since you have the mall within walking distance

Room was clean, it’s just an older building, staff was decent, no free parking and they had issues with elevator. Location is great, walking distance to everything. Area was clean and safe.

The staff are supportive and pleasant. The place needs a lot of upgrades. The elevator is manually operated. The air conditioning if you adjust the thermostat it will have a foul smell

The food was cold. It would have been better to eat breakfast outside. I did not use the pool although it looked fine.

The property is old. U have to call before u can use the elevator. They don't have a face cloth. They should have a scrub & dish liquid to use in washing dishes.

Yes, room clean and the staff are very good, but they have to fix the elevators, proper and fix all the doors the fire doors in the stairwell for fire because most of them don’t close and there should be no trash in the stairwell

We always stay at the Prince Plaza II Hotel when we are visiting Manila. The staff are superb, very friendly and efficient and extremely helpful. The location is excellent, with many shops and restaurants within close walking distance. We would recommend to anyone.
