Your Travel Guide to Boracay Island as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Boracay Island from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For most Filipino travelers, flying is the quickest way to reach Boracay Island. Direct flights from Manila (MNL) to Caticlan Airport (MPH) are the most convenient, with travel times around 1 hour and 15 minutes. Fares can range from PHP 3,000 to PHP 6,000 for a round trip if you book flight tickets in advance, especially during off-peak seasons. Kalibo International Airport (KLO) is another option, often with cheaper flights, but requires a longer bus or van transfer (around 1.5 to 2 hours) to Caticlan Jetty Port.

Traveling by land and sea is a more budget-friendly option for those with more time. Buses from major terminals in Metro Manila to Caticlan Jetty Port are available, with fares typically ranging from PHP 1,000 to PHP 1,500 one way. The journey is long, often taking 10 to 12 hours, and involves overnight travel. This option is best for travelers who want to save money and don't mind the extended travel time.

Driving your own vehicle is also possible, though it requires navigating through Luzon and then taking a ferry. The drive from Manila to Caticlan can take around 12 to 14 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. Toll fees will add to the overall cost. This method offers flexibility but is the most time-consuming and requires significant planning.

Best Time to Visit Boracay Island

The peak season in Boracay Island generally runs from November to April, coinciding with the dry season. During these months, you can expect sunny skies, calm seas, and pleasant weather, making it ideal for beach activities. This period, however, also means higher prices for flights and accommodation, and more crowds.

For a more relaxed and wallet-conscious trip, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons, which are typically from May to June and October. The weather is still generally good, with occasional rain showers, but the crowds are smaller, and prices are more affordable. You can still enjoy the beautiful beaches and water activities without the peak season intensity.

The low season, from July to September, is characterized by the Amihan (northeast monsoon) winds, which can bring more frequent rain and rougher seas. While this period might not be ideal for sunbathing and swimming, it offers the lowest prices and the fewest tourists. It's a good time for travelers who are not deterred by occasional rain and are looking for the best deals.

Food and Dining Near Boracay Island — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Boracay is complete without indulging in fresh seafood. Grilled fish, prawns, and squid are staples, often prepared simply to highlight their natural flavors. You can find these at various beachfront eateries and local markets, where you can often choose your catch of the day.

Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche, is another must-try. Fresh raw fish is marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili peppers, offering a tangy and refreshing taste that perfectly complements the tropical climate. It's a light yet flavorful dish that showcases local ingredients.

For a taste of home, try some classic Filipino dishes like Adobo or Sinigang. These comforting stews are widely available and offer a familiar yet delicious meal. Many restaurants on the island serve these popular dishes, providing a taste of home amidst the island destination.

Don't forget to sample Halo-Halo for dessert. This popular Filipino treat is a delightful mix of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, and topped with leche flan and ube ice cream. It’s the perfect way to cool down after a day under the sun.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Boracay Island

Boracay Island is known for its friendly and welcoming local culture. Filipinos are generally hospitable, and respecting local customs is appreciated. Always greet people with a smile, and be mindful of noise levels, especially in residential areas. Tipping is not mandatory but is always appreciated for good service.

Safety is a priority for visitors. While Boracay is generally safe, it's always wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas. Keep your valuables secure and avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas late at night. The local authorities are present to ensure the safety and security of tourists.

In case of emergencies, the local police hotline is usually available through your accommodation or by dialing standard emergency numbers. It's also a good idea to have travel insurance for added peace of mind. Staying informed about local advisories is always recommended.

For your convenience, consider downloading essential apps. Ride-hailing apps might not be as prevalent as in major cities, but local transport apps or maps can be helpful. Weather apps are crucial for planning your daily activities, and communication apps like WhatsApp or Messenger are useful for staying in touch with family and friends back home.

- Staffs: Receptionist are welcoming but the Kuyas who should assist in your luggage are just staring at you like they don't like their job.- Supervisor: A woman in her 60s I think that looks the owner is a rude one who whispered when I followed up our rooms by 2pm that “mahina ang kalaban” means they are shortstaffed for housekeeping. Mind you that we were in the resort by 12:30 coming from Henann Prime and their check in time is 1pm. By 2:35pm they said that the rooms will be available after 25mins-which I got angry. No one is updating us even though we already dine in to their restaurant few steps from reception .- Room: We had infant in the room and just shocking that there is worm maybe coming from the trees outside. The room is not that clean though since they are pressured to prep instantly given the almost 3hrs waiting time. - Internet: Worst also. Weak internet, we used our mobile data instead.- Restaurant: People who assist us at lunch are helpful enough. They also lend us some utensils for the leftovers by dinner and ice bucket for our drinks. Thank you!- Breakfast: Just so-so typical filipino breakfast without brewed coffee (just instant). The crew is not accommodating also that he already clean our table even I am still eating without asking permission if this is okay. Bottom-line, given its price, its not worth the stay. Been to different hotels here in Boracay, and this is the worst so far.
