Your Travel Guide to Boracay Island as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Boracay Island from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For most Filipino travelers, the quickest way to reach Boracay Island is by air. Flights from Manila (MNL) to Caticlan Airport (MPH) are the most convenient, taking approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. Fares can range from PHP 2,500 to PHP 6,000 or more, depending on the season and how far in advance you book flight tickets. From Caticlan Airport, it's a short tricycle ride to Caticlan Jetty Port, followed by a 15-minute boat ride to Boracay.

Alternatively, you can fly into Kalibo International Airport (KLO), which often has cheaper flight options. Flights from Manila to Kalibo take about 1 hour and 20 minutes, with fares sometimes as low as PHP 1,500 to PHP 4,000. However, from Kalibo Airport, you'll need to take a bus or van to Caticlan Jetty Port, a journey of about 1.5 to 2 hours, costing around PHP 250-350. This makes the total travel time longer but can be a more budget-friendly approach.

For those who prefer land travel or are coming from nearby provinces, bus services are available to Caticlan. From Metro Manila, a direct bus to Caticlan can take around 10-12 hours and typically costs between PHP 1,000 to PHP 1,500. This option is best suited for travelers who want to save on airfare and don't mind a longer journey. Once you reach Caticlan, you'll proceed to the jetty port for the boat transfer to Boracay Island.

Best Time to Visit Boracay Island

The peak season for visiting Boracay Island, Aklan, generally runs from November to April. During these months, the weather is typically dry and sunny, with calmer seas, making it ideal for beach activities, swimming, and water sports. This period, especially around Christmas, New Year, and Holy Week, sees the highest number of tourists, so expect larger crowds and potentially higher prices for accommodation and flights.

For a more relaxed and wallet-conscious trip, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons or the off-peak months. The months of May to October constitute the "green season" or rainy season, though Boracay still experiences plenty of sunshine interspersed with occasional rain showers. Traveling during this time can offer lower prices and fewer crowds, allowing for a more serene experience of the island's beauty.

The Amihan season (northeast monsoon) from November to May brings calmer seas and sunny skies, making it the most popular time. The Habagat season (southwest monsoon) from June to October can bring stronger winds and waves, which might affect some water activities but also offers a different, often more dramatic, coastal scenery. For a balance of good weather and fewer people, the months of May, June, October, and November are often recommended.

Food and Dining Near Boracay Island — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Boracay Island is complete without indulging in local Filipino cuisine. A must-try is Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche, featuring fresh raw fish marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili. You'll find excellent versions in many beachfront restaurants, offering a refreshing start to any meal. It’s a perfect dish to enjoy with the sea breeze.

Another staple you should seek out is La Paz Batchoy, a hearty noodle soup with pork, shrimp, and vegetables, originating from Iloilo. While Boracay is known for seafood, this comforting soup provides a taste of the Philippines' diverse culinary landscape. Many local eateries and carinderias on the island offer this flavorful dish, perfect for a satisfying lunch.

For seafood lovers, grilled items are paramount. Freshly caught fish, squid, and prawns are often grilled to perfection over charcoal. Look for stalls or restaurants offering "ihaw-ihaw" (grilled) options. Pair your grilled seafood with a side of garlic rice and a dipping sauce of soy sauce, calamansi, and chili for an authentic Filipino dining experience.

Don't forget to try Halo-Halo for dessert. This popular Filipino treat is a delightful concoction of shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, jellies, leche flan, and ube ice cream. It's the perfect way to cool down after a day under the sun. You can find this iconic dessert in almost every restaurant and food stall across Boracay Island.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Boracay Island

The staff are friendly & helpful, location is great, 1 minute walk to the beach. Sadly we did not enjoy our stay here. The rooms let this place down terribly. I booked the deluxe double room, dark, small and overall condition was tired. The balcony was absolutely useless, tiny, with an air con unit sat on it with unpleasant views. We asked to switch rooms. We were given a family room, it was a little bigger but again it was old looking. The air con unit threw out mouldy air when switched on, it was a terrible smell. The window in the room looked out into the corridor where spare beds were being stored. After a few days we noticed the room was infested with termites. It seemed as if the staff knew! We were moved to a kingsize room. Overall this room was in better condition but still there were maintenance issues. The bathroom window didn't shut so we had mosquitoes & geckos in the room. The air con unit stank just like the one in the previous room. There were light bulbs that didn't work and to top it off the bathroom door got jammed due to a faulty handle. A guy was sent to sort it out. it would appear that this was a frequent occurrence. The handle wasn't fixed, the guy put a screw driver in the door to release it. Why not just get it fixed! Lastly the hotel booked our transfer from Godofredo Airport to the hotel. They booked through Southwest Tours. The hotel charged us 1800 peso each. We later found out the cost was actually 750 peso each. We felt this was unfair.

Replace the faucets in the bathroom. You may have a pressure issue but the main problem is a design issue. Just bite the bullet and replace them. The bathroom is always wet and musty smelling.

Kept ringing me at different times of the nite asking me what I wanted for breakfast??? It's a pre set menu and obviously precooked no wonder the food is always cold. Good location quiet nice room but housekeeping was dreadfully slow to get room clean before 5pm doesn't work for me I want to use my room that I paid for and not be disturbed.

The Hotel’s Restaurant food tasted good and all the staff were friendly and accommodating. But the environment is too noisy, there are roosters always making noise. Doors and windows are not noise proof so you can hear everyone in the environment. Couldn’t sleep well because of that. The AC unit was dripping water inside the room but they were able to repair it on the 2nd day. The bathroom was smelly even though it was clean must be the drain system. The door keycards were annoying because it wouldn’t open the door at the first try and at one point they stopped working and the maintenance staff had to reset the door lock. The safe on the closet was locked when we checked in and they also had to reset it before we could use it. The mi stick for streaming Netflix was unable to connect to the Wi-Fi and when we asked them to fix it, they couldn’t get it to work. We only found out on our last day there that you could borrow beach mats and towels from the front desk. They should’ve told us that upon checking in. The prices posted on the front desk for excursions were different than the prices told to us when they gave our number to their contact person. He said the prices went up and those were probably the old prices. The elevator stopped working from the ground floor going up for our whole stay there. There were flying ants in our bedsheets. It is a close walk to the shore but you have to pass thru an alley that smells bad. I like they have a tote bag & umbrella for us to use.

We enjoyed our stay, except for the roosters making noise starting at 130am!!! We had a garden view room, which I would opt out if next time to avoid the roosters and get a good night sleep. The food at salsa was amazing!!!!

The washroom ceiling at Room 304 had huge water damage stains and would leak stinky water all over you when you use the toilet. Room 306 always smelled like food and grease. The pathways to the entrance of this property would flood when it rains, so prepare to submerge your feet/sandals in muddy pools of wetmarket water to get to and from the property.

Best hotel deal I had so far. It exceeded my expectations. The Salsa restaurant is an added bonus with unexpected amazing cuisine. Staff were super friendly and helpful. Serene definitely contributed to our family great boracay experience.

The staff members were very nice. The restaurant was not open when we got there. The room was very small for two people. The bathroom was very small. I probably wouldn’t go back. Also it took forever to get hot water. It was hard for us to get the room cleaned. They should’ve taken one bed out and left a king bed in there instead of two queens been better but as I said, the staff was very good.
