Your Travel Guide to Puerto Princesa as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Puerto Princesa from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way to reach Puerto Princesa from Manila and other major Philippine cities is by air. Numerous airlines operate daily flights to Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS). Flight durations are typically around 1 hour and 15 minutes from Manila. Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book flight tickets, but budget-friendly options are often available, especially during off-peak periods.

For those seeking a more economical, albeit much longer, journey, bus travel is an option, particularly for those coming from other parts of Palawan. However, from Luzon, this would involve ferry crossings and extensive land travel, making it less practical for most travelers. If you are already in Palawan and looking to travel to Puerto Princesa, bus services are readily available and offer a fare range that is considerably lower than flights.

Driving your own vehicle is also possible if you are coming from nearby areas in Palawan. The roads leading to Puerto Princesa are generally well-maintained, though some stretches can be challenging. This option provides the most flexibility for exploring the island at your own pace once you arrive in the city.

Best Time to Visit Puerto Princesa

The ideal time to visit Puerto Princesa is generally during the dry season, which runs from November to May. During these months, you can expect sunny skies and calmer seas, perfect for island hopping tours and exploring the famous Underground River. The weather is typically warm and humid, with average temperatures ranging from 26°C to 32°C.

The wet season, from June to October, brings occasional rainfall, which can sometimes be heavy. While this period might see fewer tourists and potentially lower prices for flights and accommodation, it can also lead to tour cancellations due to weather conditions. For travelers who prefer consistent good weather for outdoor activities, the dry season is the recommended period to plan your trip.

Food and Dining Near Puerto Princesa — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

Puerto Princesa offers a delightful culinary scene that showcases the best of Filipino flavors, with a special emphasis on fresh seafood. A must-try is the Kinilaw, the Filipino version of ceviche, where fresh raw fish is "cooked" in vinegar, ginger, onions, and chili. It’s a refreshing appetizer that perfectly captures the taste of the sea. Many local eateries and restaurants serve this dish.

Another local specialty you should seek out is Tamilok, a type of woodworm harvested from mangrove trees. It's typically served fresh, dipped in vinegar, or sometimes cooked. While its appearance might be unusual, its taste is often described as briny and slightly sweet, offering a unique gastronomic adventure for the brave. Ka Lui Restaurant, mentioned earlier, is a renowned place to try such local delicacies.

For those who love grilled dishes, look for fresh seafood like prawns, squid, and fish grilled to perfection. Many restaurants offer a "paluto" style where you can choose your fresh catch and have it prepared according to your preference. Don't forget to try Halo-Halo for dessert, a popular Filipino cold treat made with shaved ice, milk, sweet beans, fruits, and topped with leche flan and ube ice cream.

Exploring the local markets and smaller eateries will give you a more authentic taste of Puerto Princesa. Trying dishes like La Paz Batchoy or Pancit Palabok can also be a satisfying experience, offering familiar yet distinct regional variations. These culinary explorations are a significant part of the travel experience for many Filipino visitors.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Puerto Princesa

Filipinos are known for their hospitality, and Puerto Princesa is no exception. A common local custom is the "po" and "opo" when addressing elders or those in authority, showing respect. When visiting churches or more traditional establishments, dressing modestly is appreciated. Understanding and respecting these simple cultural norms will enhance your interactions with locals.

Safety in Puerto Princesa is generally good, but as with any travel, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings. Keep your valuables secure, especially in crowded areas or markets. Avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas late at night. For emergencies, the local police hotline is typically 911, and it's advisable to have the contact number of your hotel readily available.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable map application like Google Maps is indispensable for navigation. Ride-hailing apps or local transport apps can be useful for getting around the city. For communication, ensure you have a messaging app like WhatsApp or Messenger to stay connected with family and friends back home.

It's also beneficial to have a currency converter app if you plan on shopping or dining extensively. For booking activities and tours, the Traveloka app is your go-to platform. Having these tools on your mobile device can make your trip to Puerto Princesa smoother and more enjoyable, allowing you to focus on the beauty and adventure the city offers.

I stayed particularly in room 310 which is by far very spacious. The bed is very tidy, pillows and comforter were near 5 star hotel quality. There is a large flat screen tv, coffee desk, big windows, cabinet with so many hangers, dividers, enough to unpack all your stuff. The cr and bathroom is spotless clean. I just hope there is a separate hand soap in the hand wash tub. Bidet is a great addition, good job! Towels are quite clean. I arrived early and I tried to ask the front desk if they can let me in my room I'll be checking out by 8am the next day instead of 12 noon standard check out. They are very firm with the 2am standard check in and didn't want to reconsider. That's very rude for me especially there is no occupants when I arrived which they can easily accept me.

Although we were accommodated well, the room looked old and creepy. We were placed in the basement, and it felt like we were the only one there. It also has a foul smell and dirty ceilings. The tap water also has a weird after taste. But, kudos because the staffs were all friendly, there’s wifi, and a good set if semi-buffet breakfast.

The room itself is a junk. The room stinks. The comfort room smells like urine. The bed sheets were so dusty that made our skin itchy. The air condition was not cold. According to what we have booked as advertised it is one double bed but when we came they said it is only 2 single beds and there's no such thing as double bed in that type of room. We didn't have enough sleep because of the status of the entire room. What a disappointment!

The room featured in the app is different from what we actually stayed! Do not be fooled by the clean rooms posted on the app. The bathroom is dirty with molds on the floor as well on the toilet seat. Linens are likewise dirty and moldy. The food was fine. I requested for another room when we arrived but I was told that what I reserved was the budget room. The economy room is located just beside the new building and when it rains, you get wet in going to your room. it would have been a pleasant stay were it not for the deceptive pictures on the app. 1 star for this hotel.

We stayed here for a night because our flight bound to Clark was cancelled due to the earthquake which devastated Clark airport. I booked skylight due to the reviews and the location. I quickly booked it through app because of the budget price without even reviewing what type of room is offered. Our room was a budget room. When they assisted us to our room my friend felt terrified because the room were placed on the basement and seemed a bit scary because it was like unused for a long period of time. Next time I will review wisely the room we are booking because sometimes the price could be tricky. Also the aircon in the room is in poor condition.

We were staying in one of the budget rooms downstairs (room B7) with twin beds, though we booked for a double bed room. That room and the bathroom were old and dirty. The toilet flush didn't work properly... The room need to be renewed !!! We were very disappointed and would have made a better choice booking a more expensive standard room. The staff is very friendly and efficient. Big + : they offer free airport shuttle. The breakfast is ok.

Skylight hotel has now a different name, i'm not really sure but maybe it is manage by R*d*ors, but the changes is awesome, rooms are clean and some other rooms are being renovated, the staffs are friendly and polite and the free breakfast is so good. The wifi is good maybe because we are at the 3rd floor, we stayed there for 3 nights, and planning to be back again next time when we travel to Puerto Princesa.

We requested for a one large bed, instead they gave us two single beds. shower heater is not working, there is also noise of machinery coming from outside. Staff though were very accommodating and their services to the guests. The problem is the place itself.

The staffs are not friendly. They are not smiling at all times. They seem ungrateful and not welcoming the guests well.

I'm not expecting the room I was book is like that. The pictures I saw in their ads is great, but when we came there i'm not comfortable. The wall is dirty. Smell not good. The CR hmmm I don't like, I put the bath towel to the window of the CR, I made it curtains. The aircon, not good. Mosquitoes around.

The hotel was great! They are very accommodating with our request like late check-in, late check-out and van service to airport.. The facilities were clean and up to date.. The room included tv with cable, aircon, two beds, cabinets, shampoo, soap, towel and clean bedsheet and wifi in the lobby and restaurant area. The booking also includes breakfast buffet.. the food is great that vary to different food choices for breakfast.. I highly recommend this hotel for travellers staying in puerto princesa.. a big thumbs up!!

+ location, hot shower, good breakfast - lacking a lot information about the room. The twin room is a budget room, in the basement and did not smell good. The room is old, needs renovation. The air-con is old (one piece) and too loud. No wifi in the room. 3-star for this hotel is misleading.
