Your Travel Guide to Puerto Princesa as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Puerto Princesa from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

The most convenient way for most Filipino travelers to reach Puerto Princesa is by air. Major airlines operate daily flights from Manila (MNL) to Puerto Princesa International Airport (PPS). Flight durations are typically around 1 hour and 15 minutes. Fares can vary significantly depending on the season and how far in advance you book, but budget-friendly options are often available, especially if you plan ahead and book flight tickets during promotional periods.

For those seeking a more economical, albeit significantly longer, journey, bus travel is an option, though less common for direct routes to Palawan due to the sea crossing. Typically, travelers would take a bus from Manila to a port city like Batangas, then a ferry to Puerto Princesa. This multi-leg journey can take over 24 hours and is best suited for travelers with ample time and a preference for overland and sea travel.

Driving your own vehicle is generally not feasible for reaching Palawan from Luzon due to the geographical separation. The primary mode of transport to the island remains air travel. Once you arrive in Puerto Princesa, getting around the city is easy with tricycles, taxis, and motorcycle rentals readily available. For inter-island travel or longer distances within Palawan, vans and buses are common.

Best Time to Visit Puerto Princesa

Puerto Princesa enjoys a tropical climate year-round, meaning you can expect warm temperatures regardless of when you visit. The dry season, generally from November to May, is considered the peak tourist season. During these months, you'll experience less rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor activities like island hopping, exploring the Underground River, and enjoying the beaches. The seas are typically calmer, providing excellent conditions for water-based adventures.

The wet season runs from June to October. While this period sees more frequent rain showers, they are often short-lived and followed by sunshine. Traveling during the wet season can offer a more laid-back atmosphere with fewer crowds and potentially lower prices for accommodation and tours. It's a good time to visit if you don't mind occasional rain and are looking for a more tranquil experience. Regardless of the season, always pack light clothing, swimwear, and rain gear just in case.

Food and Dining Near Puerto Princesa — What Filipino Travelers Must Try

No trip to Puerto Princesa is complete without indulging in its local culinary scene. A must-try is the fresh seafood, abundant thanks to Palawan's coastal location. Grilled fish, prawns, and squid are staples, often prepared simply to highlight their natural flavors. Look for local eateries or carinderias that serve 'kinilaw', a Filipino ceviche made with raw fish marinated in vinegar, onions, ginger, and chili. It's a refreshing and zesty dish perfect for the tropical climate.

Another local specialty you should seek out is 'tamilok', a type of woodworm harvested from mangrove trees. While it might sound adventurous, it's considered a delicacy by many. It's typically served fresh, similar to kinilaw, with a squeeze of lime and a dash of vinegar. For those with a sweet tooth, try 'ube halaya', a rich purple yam pudding, or 'bukayo', a sweet coconut confection. These desserts offer a delightful end to any meal.

Don't forget to sample 'Lato', a type of seaweed that resembles tiny grapes. It has a unique texture and a slightly salty, oceanic taste, often enjoyed as a salad with tomatoes and onions. Many restaurants along the Puerto Princesa Baywalk offer these local delights. Exploring the local markets is also a great way to discover fresh produce and try authentic Filipino snacks and meals prepared by locals.

Local Culture, Safety Tips, and Essential Apps for Puerto Princesa

Filipinos are known for their hospitality, and Puerto Princesa is no exception. A general greeting of 'Magandang araw' (Good day) or 'Salamat' (Thank you) goes a long way. Respect local customs, especially when visiting religious sites. Dress modestly when appropriate, and always ask permission before taking photos of people. The local pace of life is generally relaxed, so embrace the laid-back atmosphere.

Puerto Princesa is considered a safe city for tourists. However, like any urban area, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying expensive items. When using tricycles or taxis, agree on the fare beforehand or ensure the meter is used if available. For emergencies, the local police hotline is a good number to have.

To enhance your travel experience, consider downloading a few essential apps. A reliable map application like Google Maps is indispensable for navigation. Ride-hailing apps can be useful for getting around the city, though their availability might vary. For communication, ensure you have a messaging app like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger. Having a currency converter app can also be helpful for managing your budget.

The people are so friendly and accommodating. They took care of my mom, my sister and myself. The place is so quiet and serene. I love the rustic feel of the decors. I would love to come back. It is also very affordable. But they need to have some food to offer especially when the guests are tired to go out for lunch or dinner. But overall, 4.5 out of 5.
