Your Travel Guide to Donsol as a Filipino Traveler

How to Get to Donsol from Manila and Major Philippine Cities

For convenient booking, book flight tickets through Traveloka and compare fares across major airlines.

Traveling to Donsol from Manila and other major Philippine cities is achievable through various transport options, each offering a different balance of cost and travel time. For those flying, the most practical route involves booking a flight to Legazpi City Airport (LGP) in Albay. Airlines like Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific operate flights from Manila to Legazpi. Fares can range from PHP 2,500 to PHP 6,000 or more, depending on the season and how far in advance you book your flight.

Once you land in Legazpi, you can take a bus or a van directly to Donsol. The bus journey from Legazpi to Donsol typically takes about 1.5 to 2 hours and costs around PHP 150 to PHP 250. This is a common and convenient option for many travelers. Alternatively, you can hire a private van for a more direct and comfortable transfer, though this will be more expensive.

For travelers on a tighter budget or those who prefer a scenic overland journey, buses from Manila to Donsol are available. These buses depart from terminals like Cubao and Pasay. The trip is considerably longer, usually ranging from 10 to 12 hours, with fares typically between PHP 1,000 to PHP 1,500. This option allows you to see more of the country but requires a significant time commitment.

Driving your own vehicle is also an option, offering the most flexibility. The route from Manila involves taking the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) and then the Pan-Philippine Highway, passing through Quezon Province and Bicol Region towards Sorsogon. The total driving distance is approximately 500-600 kilometers. Be prepared for tolls and varying road conditions, especially as you get closer to Donsol.

Best Time to Visit Donsol

The ideal time to visit Donsol, particularly for those interested in its famous marine life, is during the dry season, which generally runs from November to May. This period offers calmer seas and clearer waters, enhancing the experience of whale shark encounters and other water activities. The weather is typically sunny and pleasant, perfect for exploring the town and its natural attractions.

The peak season for whale shark sightings is usually from February to April. During these months, the concentration of whale sharks in the bay is at its highest, increasing your chances of a memorable encounter. However, this is also when Donsol experiences its largest influx of tourists, so expect higher accommodation rates and more crowded conditions. Booking your accommodation and tours in advance is highly recommended.

For travelers seeking a more tranquil experience and potentially lower prices, the shoulder months of November to January and May to June can be excellent choices. While whale shark sightings might be slightly less frequent than in peak months, you can still have wonderful encounters. The weather remains generally favorable, and you'll encounter fewer crowds, allowing for a more relaxed exploration of Donsol and its surroundings.

The hotel is incredibly dated and desperately needs a refresh. There were cupboards without doors, leaking taps and a missing smoke detector amongst other things. The worst part was the stained bedsheets which are unacceptable. I would not stay here again if I was paid. Surprisingly the food was good and fair price which is why it gained a star.

The place was good in the area though we weren’t able to see the whale shark due to the weather. It had a restaurant and pool in the vicinity. Staff were friendly and we were able to avail of the room massage. One thing for improvement perhaps will be the availability of the wifi in the rooms :)

Annie in the office of this resort was very helpful and has a wealth of knowledge about the area and the Phillipines. I would definitely stay at this resort again. Breakfast omelettes were delicious!

They have their own vegetable garden and you get to eat what is currently in season. A stones throw away from the start point for whale shark watching and also Whale shark adventures and tours, where you can do a number of various tours around the region. Would highly recommend.

My girlfriend and I had a nine-night stay. Some confusion with check-in. The impression from the Expedia website is a choice of 1) (Standard) Garden View, 2) Pool View, and 3) Panoramic Sea View. We booked the Panoramic Sea View. When we were shown to our ground level room, we were surprised that we were unable to see the sea but instead had a very nice view of the garden. A check back with the front desk and were told we could pay more and upgrade to a Sea View. Then, it came out they were “fully booked”. We spent four nights in the ground floor room and then we were moved to the room above which had a TV and a better view. We accepted the move. I cannot review the Panoramic Sea View room as I believe we never saw it. The room we ended up in was very nice. Perhaps the Expedia website needs to be better clarified. Nice restaurant with good food, bar, swimming pool. TV, hot shower, and air conditioning were fine. Friendly staff. Nearby dive shop.

The resort is ideally placed to visit and organise whale shark trips. The staff are friendly and nice. The restaurant serves nice affordable food and the pool has great views of the bay. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable with good air con although we turned off at night as sea breeze kept temperatures down. We managed to borrow a kettle from reception so were able to make hot drinks. Shower was hot water so a bonus. A tricycle ride into Donsol town was around p80.

Rooms were clean but basic. The staff made up for anything that was lacking in amenties though ten fold. Administration staff organized tours, transportation, massages, you name it. The restaurant staff was friendly and accommodating and the food was delicious every time.

We had an excellent stay. The resort was very clean and the staff were very nice. The resort manager was very helpful in booking us a driver to go on day trips and tell us about things to see in the area.

Food choices limited, but my diet is different from most. I follow a vegetarian diet, no salt or butter. The view from my room was outstanding. With a deck and love chair for 2. The sunsets awesome.

A very tired property that needs investment. Aircon very old and did not work very well. Limited choice of food for a vegetarian. Friendly and helpful staff. Drinks were great. Convenient for the whale shark tours.

This was the perfect location for easy access to boat trips out to swim with the whale sharks. This was our sole reason for going to Donsol, and we weren't disappointed. It was a magical experience!
