We were 6 adults and 1 child, sharing 3 rooms. We got adjoining rooms with fairly large rooms. One room fit 2 large suitcases and 1 small suitcase, and still had enough space for prayer and a stroller. It was located on the lobby floor, making it easier for us, as we had an elderly person and a toddler with us. - Friendly staff - Toilet with bidet - Faucet with filter so we could refill drinking water - Clean room - Close to Rochor MRT - Next to Sevel - Less than 10 minutes to Bugis Street and Bugis Junction (lots of halal food and shopping) - Close to the bus terminal to Johor - Cool AC

It meets with our needs: Clean and comfy bed, enough space for 2, cold air-con, clean bathroom (note that the toilet has no bidet so might be a consideration for some. For me, it's OK and clean). Most important thing for me: very close to MRT station and surrounded by food vendors 👍

Near Bugis, near Sultan Mosque, near Johor bus terminal. In front of the hotel there is a bus stop, and not far from there is an MRT station, there is also a bicycle parking lot. Many Muslims, halal food, and there is a small mosque behind the hotel. The uncle who waited was very kind, although rarely at the reception desk, after checking out I was allowed to leave my bag at the reception desk. Thank you very much, if I go to Singapore I want to stay here again. Next to the hotel there is an Indian shop that sells mineral water at a cheap price.

More about hotels in Little India

Little India: A Sensory Journey Beyond Singapore's Usual Path

For travellers seeking an experience that pulsates with a distinct cultural rhythm, Little India in Singapore offers an unparalleled immersion. Unlike the sleek modernity that often defines the city-state, this vibrant enclave presents a kaleidoscope of colours, sounds, and aromas that transport visitors to another world. It’s a place where ancient traditions meet contemporary life, creating a unique atmosphere that appeals to those looking for more than just the typical tourist trail. From the intricate carvings on temple facades to the bustling marketplaces overflowing with spices and textiles, Little India provides a rich sensory tapestry.

The character of Little India itself is not monolithic; it unfolds across several distinct neighbourhoods, each offering a slightly different flavour. Areas like Farrer Park and Rochor, while intrinsically linked to the broader Little India experience, possess their own unique identities. Farrer Park, for instance, is known for its proximity to major medical facilities and the expansive City Square Mall, offering a blend of modern convenience and cultural proximity. Rochor, on the other hand, often feels more like the historical heart, with narrower streets and a denser concentration of traditional shops and eateries, shaping the overall stay depending on where one chooses to base themselves.

From a value perspective, Little India stands out as an attractive destination for international travellers. With a starting price of approximately ₱ 896.58 per night for accommodation, it offers a more accessible entry point into Singapore compared to some other districts. The area is renowned for its religious and spiritual sites, offering a peaceful respite, alongside its world-class shopping opportunities, particularly at the iconic Mustafa Centre. This combination of cultural depth and commercial vibrancy makes it a compelling choice for travellers from the US, Europe, and India, who can find excellent value for their money.

The accommodation landscape in Little India mirrors its diverse appeal, ranging from budget-friendly hostels to comfortable mid-range hotels. Properties like Hotel 81 Dickson, known for its practical amenities and accessibility, and ST Signature Jalan Besar, offering a more contemporary stay with facilities like a bar, exemplify this range. These establishments provide a solid foundation for exploring the district, allowing visitors to book hotel stays that suit their budget and preferences, ensuring a comfortable base from which to discover the wonders of this unique Singaporean neighbourhood.

Little India is a destination that resonates with a broad spectrum of international travellers. For those from the United States and Europe, it offers a fascinating glimpse into South Asian culture, history, and spirituality, providing a rich educational and sensory experience. Travellers from India will find a familiar yet distinct echo of home, with authentic cuisine, religious sites, and a vibrant community atmosphere. For visitors from Africa, Little India presents an opportunity to explore a dynamic multicultural hub within Asia, offering a blend of traditional and modern Singaporean life that is both accessible and engaging.

Best Areas to Stay in Little India

Little India, while a distinct cultural enclave, is comprised of several interconnected neighbourhoods, each offering a unique atmosphere and set of conveniences for international visitors. Choosing where to stay within this vibrant district can significantly shape your overall experience, influencing your access to key attractions, dining options, and the general ambiance of your trip. Understanding these nuances will help you find the perfect base for your Singaporean adventure.

Rochor

The Rochor area serves as a gateway to the heart of Little India, offering a dynamic blend of traditional charm and modern accessibility. For international travellers, it presents an exciting introduction to the district's vibrant street life, with a dense concentration of shops selling textiles, jewellery, and aromatic spices. This neighbourhood would particularly appeal to travellers from India and Southeast Asia who appreciate an authentic, bustling atmosphere and easy access to local eateries and cultural sites, feeling a sense of familiarity amidst the energetic streetscape.

From Rochor, visitors are perfectly positioned to explore the iconic Mustafa Centre, a 24-hour shopping retreat offering everything from electronics to gold. The area is also well-connected by public transport, with the Rochor MRT station providing easy access to other parts of Singapore. Food enthusiasts can dive into a plethora of hawker stalls and small restaurants serving authentic South Indian cuisine. It’s an ideal starting point for those eager to book attractions and immerse themselves in the immediate cultural richness of Little India.

Farrer Park

Farrer Park offers a slightly more contemporary and perhaps more organised feel within the broader Little India landscape, appealing to a diverse range of international visitors. It’s home to the large City Square Mall, providing a modern shopping and dining experience alongside its proximity to traditional Little India elements. This neighbourhood is well-suited for travellers from the US and Europe who appreciate a balance of cultural exploration and modern amenities, as well as families looking for convenient access to shopping and entertainment.

This area is a hub for both leisure and wellness, with numerous medical centres and hotels that cater to a global clientele. The proximity to City Square Mall means easy access to familiar retail brands, cinemas, and a wide array of food court options, including Halal-certified choices. Getting to Farrer Park from Singapore Changi Airport is straightforward via the MRT, making it a convenient choice for those prioritising ease of arrival and departure, and offering a comfortable base for exploring the surrounding cultural attractions. Little India (Central)

The central part of Little India is where the district's most iconic sights and sounds converge, offering an intense and immersive cultural experience. This is the area that most international travellers envision when they think of Little India, with its colourful shophouses, ornate temples, and bustling streets filled with the aroma of spices and jasmine. It’s particularly appealing to travellers from India seeking an authentic taste of home, as well as Western tourists eager for a deep dive into a unique cultural milieu.

Here, visitors can wander through Serangoon Road, exploring its many shops selling saris, bangles, and traditional Indian sweets. The Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple and the Abdul Gafoor Mosque stand as testaments to the area's religious diversity. This central district is also a culinary hotspot, with countless restaurants and street food vendors offering a vast array of South Indian delicacies. It’s the perfect place to base yourself if you want to be at the epicentre of Little India’s vibrant daily life and readily access its many cultural landmarks.

Jalan Besar

While slightly on the periphery of the most concentrated Little India buzz, Jalan Besar offers a more laid-back yet equally authentic experience, making it an attractive option for a different segment of international travellers. This neighbourhood retains a strong sense of local character, with a mix of heritage shophouses, traditional eateries, and emerging trendy cafes. It appeals to travellers from Europe and the US who seek a more relaxed pace and a glimpse into Singapore's evolving urban landscape, while still being within easy reach of Little India's main attractions.

Jalan Besar is known for its diverse culinary scene, ranging from traditional hawker centres serving local Singaporean fare to charming cafes offering artisanal coffee and pastries. It’s also home to several unique boutique hotels and guesthouses, providing a more intimate lodging experience. The area is well-served by public transport, with several bus routes and nearby MRT stations connecting it to the rest of the city, including the main Little India precinct, offering a peaceful retreat after a day of exploration.

Areas around Serangoon Road and Buffalo Road are particularly dense with food options, offering everything from quick snacks to elaborate meals. For Muslim travellers, Little India is a retreat, with a multitude of Halal-certified restaurants and food stalls ensuring a wide selection of delicious and permissible dishes, making it easy to dine with confidence and enjoy the local flavours.

The cost of dining in Little India offers excellent value for international visitors. A hearty meal at a local eatery or hawker stall can range from ₱ 200 to ₱ 400, making it incredibly affordable compared to many Western countries. Mid-range restaurants might charge between ₱ 600 to ₱ 1,200 for a full meal, while more upscale dining experiences can go up to ₱ 2,500 or more. This price range is highly attractive to travellers from the Philippines, India, and even those from the US and Europe, offering a chance to savour authentic cuisine without significant expense.

Navigating the dining etiquette in Little India is straightforward and adds to the cultural experience. While tipping is not mandatory in most local eateries, a small gratuity for exceptional service is appreciated. It's common to eat with your hands, especially when enjoying dishes like dosas or thalis, though cutlery is readily available. Many establishments are casual, so dressing comfortably is the norm. Embracing the communal dining atmosphere and being open to trying new dishes will undoubtedly enhance your culinary adventure in this vibrant district.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Little India

Understanding the local customs and etiquette in Little India is key to a respectful and enjoyable visit for international travellers. While Singapore is generally a multicultural society, Little India retains distinct cultural practices that visitors should be mindful of. For instance, when visiting temples or mosques, modest dress is essential; shoulders and knees should be covered. It's also customary to remove your shoes before entering places of worship or someone's home. Being aware of these nuances will ensure a more harmonious interaction with the local community.

When visiting popular landmarks like City Square Mall and the Mustafa Centre, general Singaporean etiquette applies, with an added layer of cultural sensitivity. While malls are modern and accommodating, maintaining a respectful demeanour is always appreciated. Photography within religious sites is often restricted or requires permission, so it's best to ask before taking pictures. At the Mustafa Centre, a bustling 24-hour department store, expect crowds and be patient. Queuing is orderly, and respecting personal space, even in crowded environments, is a common practice.

Safety in Little India is generally high, reflecting Singapore's reputation as one of the safest cities globally. However, as with any busy tourist area, it's wise to be aware of your surroundings and take standard precautions against petty theft, especially in crowded markets. Utilising reliable transport options like the MRT or reputable ride-hailing apps such as Grab is recommended. For travellers from the Philippines, the familiarity of a well-developed public transport system and the general safety of the area should provide a sense of ease and security during their exploration.

In case of emergencies, Singapore has a robust emergency response system. Dialing 999 will connect you to the police, and 995 for the ambulance and fire services. For Filipino travellers, it's also prudent to know the contact details for the Philippine Embassy in Singapore, which can provide assistance in various situations. While Little India is very safe, having travel insurance is always a wise precaution for any international trip, covering unforeseen medical needs or other travel disruptions, ensuring peace of mind throughout your stay.

Getting to Little India and Getting Around

For travellers from the Philippines, reaching Little India in Singapore is a straightforward process, primarily involving flights from major hubs like Manila (MNL), Cebu (CEB), or Clark (CRK). Direct flights are available from Manila to Singapore Changi Airport (SIN), typically taking around 3.5 to 4 hours and costing approximately ₱ 8,000 to ₱ 15,000 depending on the season and booking time. Connecting flights from other Philippine cities will naturally take longer. Singapore Changi Airport is exceptionally well-connected, and from there, Little India is easily accessible via the MRT system.

Once you arrive in Singapore, navigating to and around Little India is remarkably efficient thanks to the city's world-class public transportation network. The Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system is the most convenient and cost-effective way to travel. Little India has its own MRT station on the North East Line and Downtown Line, making it directly accessible from many parts of the city. A single MRT ride typically costs between ₱ 30 to ₱ 70, depending on the distance. Buses are also an extensive and affordable option, with numerous routes serving the Little India area.

The best time to visit Little India, and Singapore in general, is often during the drier months, from February to April. During this period, the weather is generally pleasant with less rainfall, making it ideal for exploring the outdoor attractions and bustling streets. While Singapore experiences a tropical climate year-round, avoiding the monsoon season (typically November to January) can enhance your travel experience. Hotel prices might see a slight increase during peak tourist seasons and major holidays, so booking in advance is advisable.

Before you depart for Little India, ensure you have a few essentials sorted. The local currency is the Singapore Dollar (SGD). While credit cards are widely accepted, carrying some cash is useful for smaller vendors and hawker stalls. You can exchange currency at the airport or in the city. Purchasing a local SIM card at Changi Airport or in the city centre will provide affordable data for navigation and communication. Essential apps include Google Maps for navigation and Grab for ride-hailing, ensuring you have all the tools for a smooth trip.

Visa Information for Singapore

For Philippine passport holders planning a trip to Singapore to visit Little India, the visa requirements are straightforward and generally favourable. Philippine citizens are granted visa-free entry into Singapore for tourism purposes, allowing for stays of up to 30 days. This visa-free status simplifies travel planning significantly, as there is no need to undergo a lengthy visa application process prior to departure. However, it is crucial to ensure your passport is valid for at least six months from the date of entry into Singapore. Use Traveloka to find the best flights — book flight.

When arriving at Singapore Changi Airport, immigration officers will assess your eligibility for entry. You will typically be required to present your valid Philippine passport, a completed Disembarkation/Embarkation (DE) card, and may be asked to show proof of onward travel, such as a return flight ticket, and sufficient funds to cover your stay. While not always requested, having hotel bookings for your intended duration of stay can also serve as evidence of your travel plans and financial capacity.

It is always recommended for travellers to verify the latest immigration policies and requirements directly with the official sources before making travel arrangements. The Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) of Singapore is the definitive authority for entry regulations. Confirming your visa-free status and any potential changes to entry requirements ensures a smooth and stress-free journey to Singapore and subsequently to the vibrant Little India district.
