I’m very fussy so I’m hard to please, the pools and location to the beach are good and a general relaxing feeling around the resort a bit expensive for the accommodation but worth a visit, they also got me into my room 1 hour earlier which was nice and a added bonus a late check-out till 12. See you again and I will recommend this place. Regards.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Phi Phi Don

Understanding local customs is key to a respectful and enjoyable visit to Phi Phi Don. While the island is accustomed to international tourists, showing respect for Thai culture will greatly enhance your interactions. The "wai," a slight bow with palms pressed together, is a common greeting and sign of respect; a polite nod is usually sufficient in return from tourists. Always dress modestly when visiting temples or more traditional areas, covering shoulders and knees. Public displays of affection should be kept to a minimum. Remember that the head is considered sacred, so avoid touching anyone's head, and never point your feet at people or religious icons.

When visiting popular spots like the viewpoints or beaches, maintaining a respectful demeanor is appreciated. While Phi Phi Don is generally a relaxed environment, it's wise to be mindful of noise levels, especially in residential areas or during quiet hours. Photography is usually permitted, but it's always polite to ask for permission before taking close-up photos of individuals. At the ₱ 2,399.07/night hotels and resorts, standard hotel etiquette applies – be mindful of shared facilities and respect quiet hours. For any cultural sites, observe signage and follow any specific rules laid out by local authorities to ensure the preservation of these places.

Safety in Phi Phi Don is generally good, but like any popular tourist destination, it's wise to take precautions. Keep your valuables secure and avoid displaying large amounts of cash or expensive jewelry. Use reputable transportation services; while Grab is available in some parts of Thailand, on Phi Phi Don, longtail boats and local taxis are common. Negotiate fares before starting your journey. Be aware of your surroundings, especially at night, and stick to well-lit areas. For Filipino travellers, it's always recommended to have travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and lost belongings, providing peace of mind throughout your trip.

For emergencies in Phi Phi Don, dial 191 for general police assistance. Tourist police are also available and can be a valuable resource for visitors. The nearest Philippine Embassy or Consulate in Thailand is located in Bangkok, which can provide assistance to Filipino citizens in distress. It's advisable to have their contact details readily available. For health concerns, ensure you have any necessary vaccinations and consider carrying a basic first-aid kit. Staying hydrated and using sun protection is crucial due to the tropical climate. Always confirm any travel advisories issued by the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) before your departure.

Getting to Phi Phi Don and Getting Around

Reaching the stunning shores of Phi Phi Don from the Philippines is an adventure in itself, typically involving a flight to a major Thai hub followed by onward travel. Flights from Manila (MNL), Cebu (CEB), or Clark (CRK) to Bangkok (BKK or DMK) are frequent, with major carriers offering competitive fares. From Bangkok, you'll need to take another flight to either Krabi (KBV) or Phuket (HKT), the closest airports to Phi Phi Don.

The total travel time, including layovers, can range from 6 to 12 hours. From Krabi or Phuket airport, a transfer to the pier is required, followed by a ferry or speedboat journey to Phi Phi Don, which takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. For seamless travel planning, consider using Traveloka to book flight tickets and ferry transfers in one go.

Once you arrive on Phi Phi Don, getting around is relatively straightforward, as the main island is quite compact and largely pedestrianized. The primary mode of transport between different bays and beaches is by longtail boat, which can be hired for private tours or as a shuttle service. Walking is also a common and enjoyable way to explore the main village areas, especially around Ton Sai Bay and Ao Lo Dalam. For longer distances or more remote areas, hiring a private longtail boat is the most practical option. There are no cars or motorbikes for rent on the island, preserving its tranquil atmosphere.

The best time to visit Phi Phi Don for most international travellers is during the dry season, which typically runs from November to April. During these months, the weather is characterized by sunny skies, calm seas, and lower humidity, making it ideal for beach activities, snorkeling, and island hopping. This period coincides with peak tourist season, so expect higher prices and more crowds. For those seeking a balance between good weather and fewer people, the shoulder months of November and April can be excellent choices. The wet season, from May to October, brings occasional rain showers but also lower prices and a more serene experience for the intrepid traveller.

Before you depart for Phi Phi Don, ensure you have a few essentials sorted. The local currency is the Thai Baht (THB). While major credit cards are accepted in larger hotels and restaurants, it's wise to carry some cash for smaller vendors, longtail boat hires, and local markets. You can exchange currency at the airport or in major towns. Purchasing a local SIM card upon arrival at the airport is recommended for easy communication and data access. Essential apps to download include Google Maps for navigation, a translation app, and potentially a ride-hailing app if available on the island for convenience.

Visa Information

For Philippine passport holders planning a trip to Thailand to visit Phi Phi Don, understanding the visa requirements is crucial. Fortunately, Thailand offers visa exemption for Filipino citizens, allowing for stays of up to 30 days for tourism purposes when entering through an international airport. This means you do not need to apply for a visa in advance. However, it is essential to ensure your Philippine passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended date of departure from Thailand and that you possess proof of onward travel, such as a return or onward flight ticket.

The entry requirements for visa-exempt travellers are generally straightforward. Upon arrival at the international airport in Thailand (e.g., Bangkok, Phuket, or Krabi), you will proceed to immigration. Immigration officers may ask for your passport, proof of onward travel, and potentially evidence of sufficient funds to cover your stay, though this is not always strictly checked for short tourist visits. While no visa fee is applicable for this visa exemption, ensure your passport has sufficient blank pages for entry and exit stamps. It is always prudent to check the latest regulations with the Royal Thai Embassy in the Philippines before your travel dates.

While the visa exemption simplifies entry for Philippine passport holders, policies can change. It is highly recommended that all travellers verify the most current visa and entry requirements directly with the official immigration authorities of Thailand or the Royal Thai Embassy in the Philippines well in advance of booking flights or making travel arrangements. Confirming your eligibility to enter visa-free ensures a smooth and stress-free journey to Phi Phi Don. For those considering longer stays or different purposes of visit, specific visa applications would be necessary, requiring consultation with the embassy.
