This is a great hotel, excellent value for money. The staff are very attentive. I stayed for 4 nights, but didn't request housekeeping, yet the staff kept checking in and messaging me to ask if I needed anything. They are incredibly thoughtful. If I visit Chiang Mai again, I will definitely stay here again. ✌🏻👍🏻

It's excellent! I stay here every time I go to Chiang Mai. It's close to food, shopping, and entertainment – everything is nearby. There's plenty of parking; I never worry about parking. Or if I want to go somewhere else, I can just flag down a red songthaew (local taxi) right in front of the hotel. The food is good, and the staff are great.

I received a room and a birthday cake. It was a wonderful experience. The room was clean and comfortable. The hotel atmosphere was great, located in the heart of the city. The pool had a great view, the food was delicious, and the service was excellent from the moment I stepped in until I left. I forgot something and they quickly helped me get it back. I really liked the check-in and check-out times. They were very flexible. You can check in and out at any time.

The hotel surrounding is very nice, nearby shopping street and cafe. The ambiance is calm and somehow it feels very relaxing. They have a dispenser and refrigerator filled with cold water, which is a good point since Chiangmai is very hot. The staff is also friendly.

We had a great 4-night stay at Eastin. The staff were super friendly and helpful. They always tried to give us the best support whenever requested. The moment we arrived at the hotel lobby, we felt welcomed by the doorbell. When checking in and out, it was quick, smooth, and full of hospitality (especially the young man). The room was spacious and clean. A kitchen for simple cooking was available. Also, you can access the gym, swimming pool, and kids club (remember to register at the lobby). The bed was comfortable for a good sleep. Besides, it’s walking distance to One Nimman complex, Maya shopping mall, Think Park Shibuya, and many delicious restaurants like Cherng Doi Roast Kitchen, Ginger Farm, Mae Jin, etc. We will definitely come back if visiting Chiang Mai again. Thank you Eastin Tan for everything 🥰

More about hotels in Su Thep

Su Thep: A Cultural Crossroads Beyond Chiang Mai's Old City

For travellers from the Philippines seeking a distinct Thai experience beyond the well-trodden paths of Bangkok or Phuket, Su Thep offers a compelling blend of modern vibrancy and traditional charm. While Thailand is renowned for its bustling metropolises and serene islands, Su Thep, a district within the larger Chiang Mai province, carves out its own niche. It’s a place where contemporary art, innovative cuisine, and a youthful energy converge with the spiritual serenity of ancient temples and lush natural landscapes. This unique juxtaposition provides a refreshing perspective for international visitors, offering a taste of Lanna culture infused with a cosmopolitan flair that sets it apart from other Thai destinations.

The character of Su Thep is not monolithic; it’s a mosaic of distinct neighbourhoods, each offering a different facet of the region's appeal. Nimmanhamin, for instance, pulses with a trendy, artistic vibe, drawing in creatives and digital nomads with its chic cafes, independent boutiques, and vibrant nightlife. In contrast, the areas closer to the Chiang Mai University and the iconic Chiang Mai Zoo offer a more laid-back, academic atmosphere, interspersed with local eateries and green spaces. Understanding these variations is key to crafting an itinerary that truly resonates, as choosing where to base yourself within Su Thep can profoundly shape your entire travel experience, from the pace of your days to the accessibility of local culture and amenities.

From a value perspective, Su Thep presents an attractive proposition for international travellers, including those from the US, Europe, and India. With an average starting price around ₱431.43 per night for accommodation, it offers a significantly more affordable entry point into a high-quality travel experience compared to many Western destinations or even other major Asian cities. Even mid-range hotels in areas like Huay Kaew can be found for around ₱1,500 to ₱2,000 per night, offering excellent amenities and comfort. This affordability extends to dining and activities, allowing visitors to explore more and enjoy a richer cultural immersion without the financial strain often associated with international travel.

The accommodation landscape in Su Thep is as diverse as its neighbourhoods, catering to a wide spectrum of preferences and budgets. Areas like Nimmanhamin are dotted with stylish boutique hotels and modern serviced apartments, exemplified by properties like TRAVELODGE NIMMAN, which offers a comfortable and well-equipped stay for those who appreciate contemporary design and convenient amenities. Further afield, you can find more budget-friendly options, ensuring that whether you're looking for a luxurious retreat or a practical base for exploration, you can easily book hotel that fits your needs and budget. This accessibility makes Su Thep a prime destination for those seeking a well-rounded Thai adventure.

Su Thep is a destination that speaks to a diverse range of international travellers. For American visitors, its blend of modern urban cool in Nimmanhamin, coupled with accessible natural beauty and cultural sites, offers a familiar yet exotic escape. European travellers often find themselves drawn to the region's rich history, spiritual sites, and the opportunity for cultural immersion, appreciating the slower pace and artistic flair. Indian travellers benefit from the relatively easy connectivity, the availability of diverse culinary options that can cater to various palates, and the excellent value for money. For African travellers, Su Thep can represent an accessible gateway to Southeast Asian culture, offering a vibrant yet manageable introduction to Thailand's unique charm and hospitality.

Best Areas to Stay in Su Thep

Su Thep, while a district within Chiang Mai, presents a fascinating array of neighbourhoods, each with its own distinct character and appeal for international visitors. Choosing where to stay is a crucial decision that can significantly shape your travel experience, influencing everything from your daily commute to the local flavours you encounter. From the trendy, artistic hub of Nimmanhamin to the more serene, university-adjacent areas, understanding these nuances will help you find the perfect base for your Thai adventure.

Nimmanhamin

Nimmanhamin is the undisputed heart of Su Thep's contemporary cool, a district that pulses with a youthful, artistic energy. It’s a magnet for digital nomads, creatives, and anyone who appreciates a stylish urban environment. Think chic cafes serving artisanal coffee, independent boutiques showcasing local designers, vibrant street art, and a buzzing nightlife. This area feels distinctly modern and international, making it a comfortable and exciting base for travellers who enjoy being at the centre of the action, with a constant buzz of activity and a plethora of trendy spots to explore. Hotels like TRAVELODGE NIMMAN are perfectly situated to capture this vibe.

From Nimmanhamin, you're well-positioned to explore the wider Su Thep region and beyond. The area itself is a destination, with countless eateries, galleries, and shops to discover. For day trips, you can easily arrange transport to nearby temples, the Chiang Mai Zoo, or even venture further afield to explore the natural beauty of the surrounding mountains. Getting to Nimmanhamin from Chiang Mai International Airport is a short and affordable taxi or ride-sharing journey, typically taking around 15-20 minutes. This makes it a convenient choice for those prioritizing easy access and a lively atmosphere.

Huay Kaew

Huay Kaew offers a more balanced experience, bridging the gap between the bustling city centre and the more tranquil outskirts of Su Thep. It’s an area known for its proximity to major shopping centres like Maya Lifestyle Shopping Center and the Chiang Mai Convention Centre, making it ideal for travellers who enjoy a mix of retail therapy and convenient access to amenities. The neighbourhood has a slightly more established feel than Nimmanhamin, with a good selection of hotels and restaurants catering to both locals and tourists. It’s a practical choice for those who want to be close to urban conveniences without being in the thick of the most intense nightlife.

The practical advantages of staying in Huay Kaew are numerous. It’s a hub for transportation, with easy access to songthaews (red trucks) and taxis that can take you to other parts of Su Thep or Chiang Mai city. The Chiang Mai University campus is nearby, offering a glimpse into local student life and often featuring affordable eateries. For those interested in exploring the region's attractions, Huay Kaew serves as a good starting point for trips to Doi Suthep temple or the Mae Ping River. The journey from the airport is also straightforward, usually around 20-25 minutes by car.

Su Thep (Central/University Area)

The area broadly designated as "Su Thep" often encompasses the vicinity around Chiang Mai University and the Chiang Mai Zoo, offering a more relaxed and academic atmosphere. This part of Su Thep is characterized by its green spaces, educational institutions, and a more local feel compared to the commercial buzz of Nimmanhamin. It’s an excellent choice for travellers seeking a quieter base, perhaps students visiting the university, or those interested in exploring the natural attractions like the zoo and the nearby botanical gardens. The presence of a large student population also means a good availability of affordable food options.

Staying in this part of Su Thep provides easy access to the Chiang Mai Zoo, a popular attraction for families and animal lovers. The university campus itself is a pleasant place to wander, and nearby streets are lined with local eateries and small shops. For cultural excursions, the iconic Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is relatively accessible from this area, often via songthaew. Getting to and from Chiang Mai International Airport is a manageable journey, typically taking about 20-30 minutes by taxi or ride-sharing service, making it a convenient, albeit less central, option for exploring Su Thep.

Old City Fringe (Near Huay Kaew/Su Thep)

While the historic Old City of Chiang Mai is a distinct area, the fringes bordering Su Thep, particularly near Huay Kaew and the university, offer a compelling blend of accessibility and local flavour. This zone provides a more authentic glimpse into Chiang Mai life, away from the most concentrated tourist crowds but still within easy reach of key attractions. You'll find a mix of traditional guesthouses, local markets, and eateries frequented by residents, offering a more immersive cultural experience. It’s ideal for travellers who want to experience the real Su Thep while maintaining convenient access to the city's main sights.

This transitional area is perfect for those who want to explore the Old City's temples and markets but prefer a quieter evening. It’s also a good base for accessing the natural beauty surrounding Su Thep, including Doi Suthep. Public transport, primarily songthaews, is readily available and connects you efficiently to both the Old City and the more modern districts like Nimmanhamin. The journey from Chiang Mai International Airport is typically around 20-25 minutes, making it a practical choice for travellers seeking a balance between cultural immersion and urban convenience. You can easily book attractions and tours from here.

What to Eat and Where to Find It in Su Thep

Su Thep, located within the cultural heartland of Northern Thailand, offers a culinary landscape that is both deeply traditional and excitingly contemporary. While Thailand is globally celebrated for its diverse cuisine, Su Thep presents its own unique flavours and dining experiences that are a must-try for any visitor. From the aromatic spices of Lanna cuisine to the innovative fusion dishes found in its trendy cafes, the district provides a gastronomic journey that reflects its vibrant identity. Exploring these local tastes is an essential part of understanding the soul of this captivating region.

The culinary scene in Su Thep is best explored through its diverse offerings, from bustling street food stalls to sophisticated restaurants. Iconic Lanna dishes like Khao Soi, a rich and creamy curry noodle soup, and Sai Oua, a flavourful Northern Thai sausage, are readily available and highly recommended. For Muslim travellers, finding Halal-certified eateries is becoming increasingly feasible, with many restaurants in tourist-friendly areas like Nimmanhamin offering Halal options or clearly indicating their adherence to Islamic dietary laws. Exploring local markets, such as the Warorot Market (Kad Luang) on the outskirts of Su Thep, provides an authentic glimpse into the local food culture and an opportunity to sample a wide array of regional specialties.

Dining in Su Thep offers remarkable value for international travellers. Street food, a classic Thai experience, can be enjoyed for as little as ₱50-₱150 per meal, making it incredibly accessible for budget-conscious visitors from the Philippines, India, or Africa. Mid-range restaurants, offering a more comfortable dining environment with a wider selection of dishes, typically range from ₱300 to ₱800 per person. Even upscale dining experiences in areas like Nimmanhamin, while more expensive, still present competitive pricing compared to Western cities, often costing around ₱1,000 to ₱2,000 per person for a multi-course meal, allowing travellers from the US and Europe to indulge without excessive cost.

Navigating dining etiquette in Su Thep is straightforward and adds to the cultural experience. Tipping is not mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service, with a small amount (around 10-20 Baht) often left at street food stalls or in casual eateries, and a slightly larger percentage (5-10%) at more formal restaurants. It's customary to use the provided cutlery, and sharing dishes is common practice in Thai dining. When dining at local establishments, observing how locals eat can provide helpful cues. Meal times are generally flexible, with locals often eating throughout the day, and it's polite to wait for your host or elders to begin eating before you do.

Cultural Norms and Staying Safe in Su Thep

Understanding and respecting local customs is paramount for a smooth and enriching travel experience in Su Thep. While Thai culture is generally known for its politeness and hospitality, certain nuances can catch international visitors off guard. In tourist-heavy areas like Nimmanhamin, the atmosphere is more cosmopolitan, and locals are accustomed to diverse behaviours. However, venturing into more traditional neighbourhoods or visiting religious sites requires a greater awareness of local etiquette, such as dressing modestly and maintaining a respectful demeanour to ensure positive interactions and avoid unintentional offence.

When visiting places like TRAVELODGE NIMMAN or R2 Hotel Chiangmai, standard hotel etiquette applies. Dress codes are generally relaxed within the hotel premises, but it's advisable to wear appropriate attire when entering hotel restaurants or common areas. Photography is usually permitted, but it's always courteous to ask for permission before taking pictures of staff or other guests. For religious sites within or near Su Thep, such as temples, it is essential to dress conservatively, covering shoulders and knees. Removing shoes before entering temples or homes is a sign of respect, and it's considered impolite to point your feet at people or religious icons.

Safety in Su Thep is generally high, making it a comfortable destination for international travellers. However, as with any urban area, exercising common sense precautions is advised. Keep valuables secure and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded markets or at night. For transportation, ride-hailing apps like Grab are widely available and offer a convenient and relatively safe way to get around, often with transparent pricing. Local songthaews are also a very affordable and common mode of transport, though agreeing on the fare beforehand is recommended. For Filipino travellers, familiarizing yourself with local emergency numbers and having travel insurance is always a prudent step.

In case of emergencies, the tourist police are available and can be contacted for assistance. For urgent medical needs, hospitals in Chiang Mai are well-equipped. The Philippine Embassy in Bangkok is the primary diplomatic mission for Filipino citizens in Thailand, and it's advisable to have their contact details handy for any consular assistance required. While Su Thep itself is a district within Chiang Mai, knowing the general emergency numbers for Thailand (e.g., Tourist Police: 1155) is beneficial. For Filipino travellers, checking the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) advisories before departure is recommended, and having contact information for the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) can be useful for OFWs.

Getting to Su Thep and Getting Around

Reaching Su Thep from the Philippines is a straightforward process, primarily involving flights into Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX), which serves the entire Chiang Mai province, including Su Thep. Travellers from Manila (MNL), Cebu (CEB), or other major Philippine hubs will typically find connecting flights, often with a layover in Bangkok (BKK) or other regional Asian cities. Direct flights are less common but may be available seasonally. Flight durations can range from approximately 6 to 10 hours, depending on the layover. The cost of flights can vary significantly, but budget around ₱10,000 to ₱25,000 for a round trip, especially if booked in advance. It's highly recommended to book flight tickets well in advance to secure the best fares.

Once you arrive at Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX), getting to your accommodation in Su Thep is convenient and affordable. Taxis and ride-sharing services like Grab are readily available at the airport, offering direct transfers to hotels in areas like Nimmanhamin or Huay Kaew. The journey typically takes 15-30 minutes, depending on traffic and your specific destination within Su Thep, and costs approximately ₱300-₱500. For those seeking a more local experience and a lower cost, airport buses or shared minivans might be an option, though they may involve more stops and longer travel times.

The best time to visit Su Thep generally aligns with Northern Thailand's cool and dry season, which runs from November to February. During these months, temperatures are pleasant, with daytime highs in the mid-20s Celsius and cooler evenings, making it ideal for exploring the city and surrounding natural attractions. This period is also peak tourist season, so expect higher hotel prices and more crowds. The hot season (March to May) can be quite warm, while the rainy season (June to October) brings humidity and frequent downpours, though it also means fewer tourists and lush green landscapes.

Before departing for Su Thep, ensure you have your essential travel documents in order. Your Philippine passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay. While Thailand offers visa-free entry for Philippine passport holders for tourism purposes for up to 30 days, it's always wise to confirm the latest regulations. Local currency is the Thai Baht (THB). While major credit cards are accepted in hotels and larger establishments, carrying some cash is essential for markets, street food, and smaller vendors.
