The price is okay compared to the quality of the room, okay, I stayed for a limited time, rested before going to the airport to check in, so even though it was a bit far from the airport, I still chose this place because it was a bustling place near shops and restaurants. Those who like quiet should consider because the room is not soundproof. There was 1 power outlet at the bedside that did not work, the dryer automatically turned off even though I had only dried it for 2 minutes. Dirty towels 😕 Met 2 staff members, both of whom were very enthusiastic and friendly 🫶

Spacious bedroom, delicious breakfast, and strategically located at the city center. My room was on the 24th floor with a river view, it was really beautiful. Apparently, this is a brand new hotel, so the interior design is modern and bright. Will definitely come back to stay at this hotel on my next visit to Ho Chi Minh City.

Last time I contacted myself, I got a new, beautiful room. This time I booked through traveloka and was assigned to a room for long-term stays, so the room was not new, the water table was stained and had many stains. In addition, the campus and reception lobby are beautifully decorated and the staff are lovely.

Ho Chi Minh: A City of Contrasts for the Discerning Filipino Traveller

Ho Chi Minh City, once known as Saigon, pulsates with an energy that captivates international visitors, offering a unique blend of historical depth and modern dynamism. For travellers from the Philippines, it presents an accessible yet distinctly foreign adventure, a place where the echoes of the past meet the relentless march of progress. Unlike other destinations in Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City stands out as the nation's economic powerhouse, a sprawling metropolis where French colonial architecture stands shoulder-to-shoulder with gleaming skyscrapers, and bustling markets teem with life alongside chic cafes. This vibrant urban landscape promises a sensory feast, from the aroma of street food to the cacophony of motorbikes, creating an immersive experience that is both exhilarating and deeply rewarding for those seeking a taste of Southeast Asian urbanity.

The sheer diversity within Ho Chi Minh City itself is a key draw, ensuring that no two visits are quite the same. The city is a mosaic of distinct neighbourhoods, each offering a unique flavour and atmosphere. From the bustling backpacker retreat of Phạm Ngũ Lão and the sophisticated Bến Nghé in District 1, to the more residential feel of Ward 10 in Phu Nhuan, and the further-flung, tranquil areas like Tân An Hội, Bình Mỹ, and Trung Lap Thuong in Cu Chi, the choice of where to base yourself profoundly shapes your experience. Exploring these varied districts, from the commercial heart to the quieter outskirts, reveals the multifaceted character of this immense urban area, providing ample opportunities for discovery and tailored travel.

From a value perspective, Ho Chi Minh City presents an attractive proposition for international travellers, including those from the Philippines. With an average starting price of just ₱ 922.46 per night and an overall review score of 8.0 from 256 reviews, the city offers considerable bang for your buck. This affordability extends across accommodation, dining, and activities, making it a compelling destination for budget-conscious travellers from the US, Europe, and India, who will find their PHP stretching further here than in many Western cities. This economic accessibility, combined with rich cultural experiences, positions Ho Chi Minh as a prime choice for international exploration.

The accommodation landscape in Ho Chi Minh City mirrors its diverse character, offering options to suit every preference and budget. For instance, properties like the destination Cu Chi Hotel and Golden Emerald Resorts, situated in the more rural outskirts, provide a glimpse into a different pace of life, often featuring lush grounds and a more relaxed ambiance. These establishments, while perhaps not in the city's immediate centre, offer a unique perspective on the region and are indicative of the varied lodging experiences available. For travellers looking to explore these diverse offerings, it's easy to book hotel stays that align with their desired Ho Chi Minh adventure.

Ultimately, Ho Chi Minh City appeals to a broad spectrum of international travellers. American and European visitors often seek its historical sites, vibrant street life, and burgeoning culinary scene, appreciating the blend of old and new. Indian travellers frequently find value in its affordability, excellent connectivity, and the familiar warmth of Southeast Asian hospitality, often exploring its markets and diverse food offerings. While direct flight connections might be less common for African travellers, the city's growing international profile and its status as a major hub in Southeast Asia make it an increasingly attractive destination for those looking to experience a dynamic and culturally rich Asian capital.

Best Areas to Stay in Ho Chi Minh

Ho Chi Minh City is a sprawling metropolis, and choosing the right neighbourhood to stay in is crucial for an enriching travel experience, especially for first-time international visitors. Each district offers a distinct atmosphere, from the bustling commercial centres to quieter residential pockets and areas with a deep historical background. Understanding these variations will help you select a base that best suits your travel style, interests, and desired pace, ensuring you can easily access the sights, sounds, and flavours that make this city so captivating.

District 1 (Bến Nghé, Phạm Ngũ Lão, Nguyen Cu Trinh)

District 1 is the undisputed heart of Ho Chi Minh City, a dynamic hub where business, culture, and nightlife converge. For international travellers, particularly those from Western countries, this district offers a familiar yet distinctly Vietnamese urban experience. It's home to iconic landmarks, upscale shopping, and a plethora of dining and entertainment options, making it a convenient and exciting base. The energy here is palpable, with a constant flow of people and activity, appealing to those who want to be in the thick of it all.

Within District 1, you'll find key attractions like the Reunification Palace and Notre Dame Cathedral, alongside vibrant street markets like Ben Thanh. The Phạm Ngũ Lão area is renowned for its backpacker-friendly atmosphere, offering budget accommodation and lively bars, while areas like Bến Nghé cater to a more upscale clientele. Getting to District 1 from Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) is straightforward via taxi or ride-hailing apps, typically taking 30-45 minutes depending on traffic. This district is ideal for travellers looking to book attractions and explore the city's core.

District 3 (Vo Thi Sau)

District 3 offers a more local and slightly less frenetic atmosphere compared to the central buzz of District 1, while still being conveniently located. It's characterized by charming tree-lined streets, colonial-era villas, and a growing number of trendy cafes and eateries that appeal to both locals and expatriates. For travellers seeking a blend of authentic city living with easy access to major sights, District 3 provides a compelling option. It offers a glimpse into the daily life of Ho Chi Minh City residents, away from the main tourist throngs.

This district is a great place to discover hidden culinary gems and experience a more relaxed pace. You can wander through local markets, enjoy Vietnamese coffee culture in its many cafes, and find unique boutiques. While it doesn't boast major landmarks like District 1, its charm lies in its authenticity and its proximity to the city's core. Public buses and taxis are readily available for travel within the district and to other parts of the city. Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) is also relatively accessible from District 3, usually within a 20-30 minute drive.

Phu Nhuan District (Ward 10)

Phu Nhuan District, particularly areas like Ward 10, presents a more residential and local flavour, offering a genuine slice of Ho Chi Minh City life. It's a district where families reside, and local businesses thrive, providing a more grounded experience for travellers who wish to step away from the intense tourist circuits. While it might lack the grand landmarks of District 1, it compensates with a vibrant local food scene and a more laid-back ambiance, making it suitable for those seeking an immersive cultural experience.

This area is a fantastic spot for food enthusiasts, with numerous street food stalls and local restaurants serving authentic Vietnamese cuisine at very reasonable prices. It’s a place to observe daily routines, from morning markets to evening gatherings. While not a primary tourist destination, its central location means that key areas like District 1 are still easily reachable by a short taxi or motorbike ride. Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) is also relatively close, making it a convenient choice for travellers prioritizing proximity to the airport.

Cu Chi District (Tân An Hội, Bình Mỹ, Tan Phu Trung, Trung Lap Thuong)

The Cu Chi District, encompassing areas like Tân An Hội, Bình Mỹ, Tan Phu Trung, and Trung Lap Thuong, offers a stark contrast to the urban intensity of central Ho Chi Minh City. This region is characterized by its rural landscapes, agricultural fields, and historical significance, most notably the Cu Chi Tunnels. It appeals to travellers seeking a quieter, more nature-oriented experience, or those specifically interested in Vietnam's wartime history. It provides a peaceful retreat from the city's hustle and bustle, allowing for a different perspective on the region.

This district is primarily known for the Cu Chi Tunnels, a vast network of underground tunnels used during the Vietnam War, which is a significant historical attraction. Beyond the tunnels, visitors can explore the surrounding countryside, visit local farms, or simply enjoy the tranquility. Accommodation here often leans towards resorts or guesthouses offering a more relaxed atmosphere. Reaching Cu Chi from central Ho Chi Minh City typically involves a taxi or bus journey, taking approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. It's a worthwhile day trip or an overnight stay for those interested in history and rural Vietnam.

District 7 (Tan Phu)

District 7, particularly the Tan Phu area, has emerged as a modern and increasingly popular residential and commercial hub, especially for expatriates and families. It offers a more planned and contemporary urban environment compared to the older districts, with wide boulevards, modern apartment complexes, and a growing number of international schools and amenities. For travellers who appreciate a cleaner, more organized setting with a good range of dining and shopping options, District 7 provides a comfortable and convenient base, offering a different facet of Ho Chi Minh City's development.

This district is known for its pleasant living environment, featuring parks, shopping malls like Crescent Mall, and a diverse culinary scene catering to international tastes. It's a good option for longer stays, especially for families, due to its serviced apartments and family-friendly facilities. While it's a bit further from the historical centre of District 1, it's well-connected by road, and travel to Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) is manageable, typically taking around 30-40 minutes. It offers a blend of modern convenience and a more relaxed residential feel.

District 5 (Cholon)

Cholon, often referred to as the city's Chinatown and primarily located within District 5, is a vibrant and historically rich area brimming with Chinese culture, bustling markets, and ornate temples. For international travellers, it offers an immersive sensory experience, a stark contrast to the more Westernized parts of District 1. The narrow streets are alive with activity, from traditional medicine shops and gold merchants to bustling food stalls, making it a fascinating district to explore for those seeking a deeper cultural dive and a taste of the city's diverse heritage.

This district is a destination for food lovers, renowned for its authentic Chinese and Vietnamese-Chinese cuisine, from dim sum to noodle soups. Key attractions include the Thien Hau Temple and the Binh Tay Market, offering a glimpse into traditional commerce. Navigating Cholon's labyrinthine streets is part of the adventure, best done on foot or by cyclo. It's well-connected to other parts of the city by taxi and bus. While not directly adjacent to the airport, it's a manageable taxi ride away, offering a unique cultural experience within Ho Chi Minh City.

District 2 (Thao Dien)

Thao Dien in District 2 has become a prominent expatriate enclave, known for its leafy streets, stylish villas, international schools, and a sophisticated array of cafes, restaurants, and boutiques. It offers a more tranquil and upscale living experience, distinct from the city's central hustle. For travellers who appreciate a refined atmosphere, a wide selection of international cuisine, and a relaxed pace, Thao Dien provides a comfortable and convenient base, often favoured by families and long-term residents seeking a high quality of life within the urban landscape.

This area is a hub for international dining, with numerous restaurants offering global cuisines, alongside trendy cafes and yoga studios. It's a great place for leisurely strolls, shopping for unique items, and enjoying a more serene environment. While it's located a bit further east from the main historical attractions of District 1, it's well-connected by road, and travel to Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) is feasible, typically taking around 40-50 minutes depending on traffic. It's ideal for those seeking a comfortable, modern, and slightly removed urban experience.

District 4

District 4, once known for its less-than-savory reputation, has undergone a significant transformation and is now emerging as a trendy and dynamic district, particularly popular with younger locals and adventurous travellers. It's characterized by its vibrant street food scene, lively local bars, and a more gritty, authentic urban feel that contrasts with the polished veneer of District 1. For those looking to experience a more raw and energetic side of Ho Chi Minh City, away from the typical tourist trails, District 4 offers a compelling and exciting exploration.

This district is a culinary hotspot, especially for seafood and local delicacies, with numerous street food stalls and small eateries drawing crowds in the evenings. It's also home to some interesting historical sites and a growing number of independent coffee shops and art spaces. While it's geographically very close to District 1, it offers a distinctly different vibe. Getting around is easy via motorbike or taxi. Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) is accessible, though the journey might take longer due to city traffic, typically around 30-45 minutes.

District 10 (Ward 10)

District 10, including areas like Ward 10, offers a more local and residential feel, providing a genuine glimpse into the everyday life of Ho Chi Minh City residents. It's a district characterized by its bustling local markets, universities, and a wide array of affordable eateries and shops catering primarily to the local population. For travellers seeking an authentic urban experience away from the main tourist hubs, District 10 provides an opportunity to immerse themselves in the city's daily rhythm and discover local flavours and culture.

This district is a great place to explore local markets like the Ky Hoa Flower Market or the Nguyen Tri Phuong Market, offering a sensory overload of sights, sounds, and smells. It's also known for its numerous universities, contributing to a youthful and energetic atmosphere. While it doesn't have major tourist attractions, its central location makes it easy to reach other parts of the city via taxi or bus. Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) is also relatively accessible, making it a practical choice for those who want to experience a more local side of Ho Chi Minh City.

Tan Binh District (Ward 4)

Tan Binh District, particularly Ward 4, is most notable for being home to Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN), making it a crucial transit point for many travellers. Beyond its airport proximity, it's a bustling district with a mix of residential areas, commercial activity, and local markets. For travellers who prioritize convenience for early morning or late-night flights, or those who prefer to stay closer to the airport, this district offers practical accommodation options. It provides a functional base for transit passengers or those looking for easier airport access.

The main draw of Tan Binh District for travellers is its proximity to the airport, offering a range of hotels and apartments that cater to transit passengers. While it may not offer the same level of tourist attractions as central districts, it provides a more local, everyday urban experience with numerous local eateries and shops. Getting around within the district is easy with taxis and ride-hailing services. For those looking to explore the city centre, it's a straightforward taxi or bus ride away, typically taking 20-30 minutes depending on traffic.

Cu Chi (Trung Lap Ha, Trung Lap Thuong)

The areas of Trung Lap Ha and Trung Lap Thuong within Cu Chi District represent the more rural and historically significant outskirts of Ho Chi Minh City. These locations are deeply connected to Vietnam's wartime history, most famously as the site of the extensive Cu Chi Tunnels. For travellers interested in understanding the country's past and experiencing a landscape far removed from the urban sprawl, these areas offer a unique and poignant perspective. They provide a tranquil setting, allowing for reflection and a deeper appreciation of the region's resilience.

These locales are primarily visited for their historical importance, particularly the Cu Chi Tunnels, which offer a tangible connection to the war. Beyond the tunnels, the landscape is characterized by agricultural fields and a slower pace of life. Accommodation options here are fewer and tend to be more rustic or retreat-style, focusing on peace and quiet. Reaching Trung Lap Ha and Trung Lap Thuong from central Ho Chi Minh City requires a significant journey, typically 1.5 to 2 hours by car or bus, making them ideal for a dedicated day trip or an overnight stay for history enthusiasts.
