MacRitchie Reservoir Park is Singapore's most rewarding urban nature escape — an 11-kilometre network of trails through secondary rainforest, built around one of the city's oldest reservoirs. Unlike the more manicured parks around Marina Bay, MacRitchie feels genuinely wild: the canopy closes overhead, long-tailed macaques cross the path ahead, and the only sounds are the water, birds, and whatever footwear you brought. For a city of Singapore's density, it's a remarkable thing to have within reach.

| Area | Hours |
| Nature trail and reservoir park | 07:00 – 19:00 daily |
| TreeTop Walk | Tue–Fri: 09:00–17:00 | Sat, Sun, PH: 08:30–17:00 | Closed Mondays (except PH) |
Last entry to TreeTop Walk is 30 minutes before closing. The walk closes on Mondays unless it's a public holiday.
MacRitchie has multiple trail options suited to different fitness levels and time commitments.
| Trail | Distance | Difficulty | Highlights |
| Prunus Trail | ~2 km | Easy | Scenic boardwalk, reservoir views, short loop |
| Petaling Trail | ~5.7 km | Moderate | Forest interior, wildlife sightings, good for birding |
| TreeTop Walk Loop | ~10.3 km | Moderate-strenuous | Full loop including the suspension bridge; 3–4 hours |
The TreeTop Walk is the centrepiece — a 250-metre free-standing suspension bridge at canopy level between two ridges. The views over the forest canopy are genuinely spectacular, and the bridge itself is an engineering statement in context. It requires doing the longer loop to reach it, so plan accordingly.
1. Start early. Singapore's midday heat is unforgiving. Aim to start before 09:00, especially for the full TreeTop Walk loop. Early morning also gives you better wildlife sightings — hornbills, monitor lizards, and macaques are all more active in cooler hours.
2. Wear proper footwear. The trails are not paved. Roots, exposed soil, and uneven terrain make trail shoes or sports shoes necessary. Sandals are a bad idea.
3. Bring water and pack snacks. Facilities are minimal on the trails. Bring at least one litre of water per person for the shorter routes, more for the full loop. The café at the reservoir entrance has limited options.
4. Respect the macaques. The long-tailed macaques along the trail are wild and have learned that humans carry food. Do not feed them, do not make eye contact, and secure food in a bag. They are curious rather than aggressive, but they can take things quickly.
5. Check the TreeTop Walk schedule before you go. Arriving at the trailhead only to find the TreeTop Walk closed on a Monday is a common mistake. It also closes in certain weather conditions.
There are three main entrances, each accessible by public transport:
By car: park at MacRitchie Reservoir Park via Lornie Road. There is a fee during peak hours.
MacRitchie sits within the Central Catchment Nature Reserve, Singapore's largest remaining rainforest fragment. What you might see depends on time of day and trail chosen. Regular sightings include long-tailed macaques (common, especially near the boardwalk), smooth-coated otters (near the reservoir), monitor lizards, various hornbill species, kingfishers, and occasionally a wild boar in the deeper forest sections. The forest supports a surprisingly high bird diversity for an urban park — birding enthusiasts should bring binoculars.
MacRitchie has a small café at the main entrance, but for a proper meal after the trail, the nearest options are a short drive or taxi ride away. Three worth knowing:
At Orchard Road, LingZhi specialises in Chinese vegetarian cooking with a long reputation for quality and creativity. A good post-hike option for non-meat eaters. Clean, comfortable setting. Prices and availability subject to change.
At 7 Ann Siang Road, a relaxed French bistro known for its Steak Frites with endless fries and a French wine list. Works well as a reward meal after the longer loop. Prices and availability subject to change.
Near Novena, TungLok recreates the atmosphere of traditional Chinese teahouses — good Cantonese classics, automated tray delivery for novelty, and a comfortable setting for groups. Prices and availability subject to change.
A day at MacRitchie is free — but the rest of a Singapore trip isn't, and that's where Traveloka makes a real difference.
