A Sensory Experience at Scentopia Singapore

Ever wondered what your personality smells like, or how does it relate to the scents you personally enjoy? I did. And to quench my curiosity, I did a customised perfume making workshop at Scentopia Singapore, creating a unique perfume based on my personality.

What is Scentopia Singapore?

Located along Siloso Beach Walk of Sentosa Island, Scentopia Singapore is a one-of-a-kind fragrance workshop that blends science, art and one’s personality into an immersive scent-making experience.

Known for their personality-based perfume making workshops, the space is split into different ‘scent zones’ where guests can smell different scents from over 300 botanical and orchid infused oils, before concocting their favourite blends into a signature scent for themselves.

While most of the scents and oils in the scent zones are alcohol based, Scentopia Singapore offers halal options for Muslim guests too.

My Perfume Making Experience

The whole experience started with a 3 minute questionnaire to better understand one’s personality. The questions were easy to answer, such as “What do you consider yourself to be?”, or my favourite question, which asked what the majority of my clothing in my closet is like.

Once done, I was given a ‘score’ based on 5 different scent profiles - Citrus, Fresh, Floral, Woody and Oriental - which relate to the number of scents I could pick from the different scent zones.

I think it is quite obvious what clothes are in my wardrobe - fun, loud and exaggerated pieces!

Each scent zone was themed differently and had bottles of scented stampers peppered on the walls of the zones. I was free to wander around the scent zones, smell the different scents, and record my favourite scents on a piece of paper - both in writing, as well as stamping the scent on; after which it would be rolled into a cone to smell the different scents put together.

The scents within each scent room were divided into ‘male’, ‘female’ and ‘unisex’ scents - but that doesn’t relate to one’s gender. Instead, it was because certain scents are more commonly found in perfumes catered to a certain gender.

There were also cute ‘fruits’ dangling from the ceiling filled with the more popular scents - it made me feel like I was in a garden smelling the beautiful ripe fruits, ready for picking!

I ended up spending close to an hour in the different scent zones, learning more about the different scents and how they ‘sit’ in a perfume as either a top, heart or base note, and putting together my personal blend.

I would never know 'Celery' smelled so good!

The great thing about this experience was that I could individually smell each scent component, but when put together, it produces a different medley of scents. For example, my personality quiz revealed that I was mainly a ‘floral’ scented person with hints of citrus and woody scents, but when put together, the scent was light, crisp and fruity, quite the opposite from my favourite perfume, Alien by Thiery Mugler. However, I honestly wouldn’t say no to the scent I made - it actually grew on me!

P.S. If you don’t like the scent you made at the end, you could also make another scent purely based on what you like!

Once I locked in the scent, I proceeded to concoct the perfume blend, and it was decanted into this beautiful glass bottle with my name engraved on it.

Why I Recommend Scentopia

Scentopia Singapore does not offer a point and purchase experience, instead, it taps into your senses, your personality and your creativity. The whole process of discovering my scent profile was really interesting and introspective, and surprisingly meaningful.

It also makes a really good gift or activity for your loved one, as it provides both a tangible gift and an experience that is highly personalised.

Tips If You’re Planning to Visit

It does get quite crowded at Scentopia Singapore, so remember to book your tickets on Traveloka to skip the queue and just show your QR code when you reach. I spent close to 2 hours at Scentopia Singapore, but time passed really quickly because I was having so much fun.

PS: If you’re planning a trip to Sentosa, don’t forget to get the Fun Discovery Pass to make a bang for your buck when you visit the different attractions.

If you’re looking to stay in Sentosa, you can consider staying in the newly launched Hotel Ora, while making a day trip out of visiting Scentopia Singapore, and the famous Rumours Beach Club at Sentosa Siloso Beach for good food, good music and all-around good vibes.
