These Singaporean hawker stalls have the Michelin Guide seal of approval

Any self-proclaimed foodie knows about the Michelin Guide, the international hallmark of fine dining establishments and chefs, and though it’s often associated with ‘atas’ gourmet food, that doesn’t mean they overlook the humble hawker stalls that serve up some of the finest street food around.

Not one, but TWO hawker stalls in Singapore currently hold a Michelin star, while a staggering 28 others made the Bib Gourmand list, where the Michelin Guide recognizes restaurants and street food stalls offering quality cuisines at a modest price.

So dive into the divine deliciousness of our Michelin Guide-approved picks that you should try while in Singapore!

Crowned as the world’s cheapest Michelin-starred meal on Traveloka’s “50 Cheapest Michelin Meals” list, Liao Fan Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice and Noodle’s Cantonese soy sauce chicken costs a mere S$2.20 and is the Singaporean version of comfort food. Besides chicken rice, you can also order soy sauce chicken noodle, roasted pork rice, char siew rice, and char siew noodles at S$3 or less!

Riding on the wave of its fame after being awarded a Michelin star, the owners have opened branches all around the world, from Bangkok to Melbourne. But everyone says that the best place to enjoy their soy sauce chicken is still at the original hawker stall, located in the Chinatown Food Complex. However, expect to be greeted with a long queue!

Your soup can come with a variety of parts, depending on your preference, from chunks of mutton meat, meatballs, tripe, tendon and even brain. Slow cooked, the tender meat simply falls off the bone and you’re even given a straw to suck the marrow out from the bone.

Hong Kee Beef Noodle’s signature Hainanese-style noodle dish is served either in a soup or dry, but most loyal patrons will opt for the soupy version, if only to have the satisfaction of slurping up the noodles coated in thick gravy. According to the Michelin inspector, the stall “has over 60 years of history” and its secret lies in the tasty beef stock that’s cooked for 24 hours.

Located only 5-10 minutes away from the Tanjong Pagar MRT station at Amoy Street Food Centre, its proximity to the CBD means hectic lunchtime crowds. So unless you’re okay with a long wait, avoid visiting during lunch on weekdays.

The braised duck is tender but tends to be slightly dry, which is why the sweet and herbaly sauce is the perfect accompaniment.

For those of you who like it spicy, you’ll appreciate the garlicky zing of the chili sambal served on the side. You can also choose to have stewed peanuts, beancurd or braised egg added on.
