Bintan Island is the largest island in the Riau Archipelago province and is adjacent to Singapore. The island consists of nearly 3,000 large and small islands, spreading across Singapore and Johor Baru, Malaysia. Its strategic location made Bintan a favorite place for Indian and Chinese merchant ships in ancient times. Not surprisingly, in the 18th century, traders from Europe, Portugal, the Netherlands, and England fought each other over this island.
In 1824 the British and the Dutch closed their disputes on this island by signing the Treaty of London, which then gave all of Singapore's northern territory to the British, while Singapore's southern territory was handed over to the Dutch. Since then the destiny and history of the northern and southern regions of Singapore have been separated. Singapore became the center of British trade development, while the Dutch concentrated on Jakarta and Medan, leaving the island of Bintan.
In the following decades, with friendly relations between Indonesia and Singapore, an agreement was signed between the two parties to jointly develop the island of Bintan which would benefit both countries in the Batam–Bintan–Karimun Free Trade Zone.
The island offers travelers opportunities for surfing, adventure, and ecotourism for students and families, but is also ideal for relaxing. Bintan Resort is a 23,000-hectares beach destination on Bintan's beautiful white sand overlooking the South China Sea. Besides that, in Bintan, there are Trikora beaches and Lagoi beaches which are famous throughout the world. It is recorded that more than millions of foreign tourists visit Bintan every year.
