Widely-known today as one of the lavish five stars hotel in Singapore, The Fullerton Hotel Singapore has a rich background dating back to 19th century. Since that period of time, the building has played monumental roles in the history of the country.

You can still find the traces of the evolution inside the current establishment.

The establishment was started as a fort

In 1829, on the northern end of the building, Fullerton Fort stood as an artillery barrack. This was a house for soldiers and 68-pounder gun. The fort lasted until 1873 and transformed into Singapore first General Post Office and the Exchange Building.

If nowadays the proximity of The Fullerton Hotel Singapore to Singapore River becomes one of the main attractions for the hotel guests, back then this location brought potential threat of military attack. The merchants whose offices stood near the river were afraid of possible line of fire if the fort was under fire.

Re-opened in 1928 as General Post Office and the Exchange Building

Today, The Fullerton Hotel Singapore building is one of the visual lures in the country. Even from afar, the architecture is a fascination to the eyes. But how was a barrack area transformed into this beauty?

After serving as a fort for years, the government decided to turn the premises into trading business center. The construction of Fullerton Building began in 1924 and finished four years later.

The graceful building itself was a winning project by Major P.H. Keys of Keys & Dowdeswell, a Shanghai firm of architects, who participated in the architectural design project. The name of the building was taken after Robert Fullerton, the first Governor of the Straits Settlements (1826–1829).

There are five tenants in this building at that period: the General Post Office, The Exchange, Singapore Club, the Marine Department, and the Import and Export Department. It was really such a one stop center at that time, where the high men ran business and lounged at the club.

Hospital in the wartime, then a part of independence declaration

In 1942, before Britain surrendered to Japan, the building was a hospital where the wounded British shoulders were treated in operation rooms. And later during the Japanese occupation, Fullerton Building was used as a headquarter for Japanese military administration.

In the post-war years, the building’s monumental status had been widely and strongly recognized. It was displayed in the postcards and circulated around the globe. Moreover, Singapore's independence declaration took place at Fullerton Square and the crowd supported the most important moment of their time from the background of the building.

A luxurious heritage hotel of now

The renovation of Fullerton Building began after Sino Land Company Ltd acquired the building in 1997.

Inside this stunning hotel, the guests will still find the traces of solid history of Fullerton. For example, on the rooftop where once stood a lighthouse whose beacon guided ships coming to the harbor in the pastime, now perched an elegant meeting room with enchanting views of Singapore's skyline and Marina Bay waterfront. This becomes one of The Fullerton Hotel Singapore’s signature facilities.
