Singapore's boutique hotel scene punches well above its weight for a city its size. The combination of Singapore's deep commitment to conservation architecture — hundreds of pre-war shophouses, colonial government buildings, and godowns (warehouses) have been carefully restored rather than demolished — and a generation of local hospitality operators with genuine design ambition has produced a remarkable range of small, distinctive hotels. What they share is a commitment to personality over scale: every hotel on this list has something to say about where it is and what Singapore is, beyond just offering a bed.

Converted from a 19th-century godown (warehouse) on the Singapore River, The Warehouse Hotel is widely considered Singapore's finest boutique property. The building has its own history — it was once a hotbed for gambling dens, secret societies, and trading activity in Robertson Quay — and the design by The Lo & Behold Group channels that past through industrial detailing, deep colours, and locally curated minibar contents. The rooftop pool looks out over the Singapore River with the CBD skyline behind it. The restaurant Po serves elevated Singaporean food; the cocktail bar has one of the most distinctive drinks programmes in the city. 37 rooms and suites; each feels considered rather than templated.
A row of heritage shophouses in Tanjong Pagar converted into 49 uniquely designed rooms and suites by New Zealand designer Anouska Hempel. The design is dramatic: a palette of black, white, and gold; four-poster beds in some rooms; spiral staircases in the Duxton Duplex Suites; a disco ball in the bar; a 1970s-inspired cocktail list. Guests are welcomed with a traditional Chinese tea ceremony with gong-chiming. The restaurant Yellow Pot serves modern Cantonese. No pool — but genuinely no equivalent in Singapore for sheer aesthetic ambition in a boutique format.
A 48-room boutique hotel in a row of restored 1930s shophouses between Clarke Quay and Chinatown. WOHA Architects — Singapore's most acclaimed architecture firm — preserved the original Chengal wood floors and 1930s Chinese inscriptions while adding contemporary elements including a rooftop infinity pool with Marina Bay Sands visible across the skyline. The Heritage Wing uses terracotta tones and Chengal wood; the Urban Wing has double-height windows with calligraphy-covered exteriors. The in-house bistro is run by Michelin-starred chef Andrew Walsh.
Designed by André Fu with meticulous references to the heritage of the Bugis neighbourhood — wooden folding doors, bespoke post-box doorbells, and original artworks throughout — Andaz Singapore occupies a 39-storey tower above Bugis. The rooftop is the main event: Mr Stork bar sits inside Instagram-famous teepee huts and offers 360-degree views of Singapore with craft cocktails. The rooftop infinity pool is one of the most design-forward hotel pools in the city. 342 rooms of generous size with city or heritage shophouse views.
InterContinental's boutique brand makes its Singapore debut in the most characterful possible neighbourhood: the Peranakan heritage district of Katong. Every surface references the area — Peranakan tile patterns in the rooms, murals depicting neighbourhood street life, the Baba Chews restaurant serving neighbourhood-specific dishes. The rooftop infinity pool looks out over the colourful shophouses and lively streets of Joo Chiat Road below. A genuinely immersive neighbourhood hotel rather than a hotel that happens to be in a neighbourhood.
Ten heritage shophouses from the early 1900s converted into a 60-room boutique hotel at the edge of Kampong Glam. Each room has a different layout and character, with full-length shutter windows, tall columns, and furnishings that reference the Malay heritage of the surrounding neighbourhood. The Farrer Horse Dining Room and Stable Bar are on-site. Walking out of the hotel onto Jalan Sultan takes you immediately into one of Singapore's most atmospheric streets, with the Sultan Mosque visible at the end of the road.
A former British military barracks from the 1930s, carefully converted into a 44-room boutique resort on Sentosa Island. The two-storey colonial heritage building retains its moulded columns and timber louvred windows, with a private lounge, complimentary all-day refreshments, and a heritage garden. Resorts World Sentosa and all three Sentosa beaches are within walking distance. The most peaceful and distinctive accommodation option on an island otherwise dominated by large resort hotels — and genuinely one of Singapore's most unusual places to stay.
