Feel The Raya Spirit in Singapore: Where to Eat, Shop and Celebrate

One of the most celebrated festivals in Singapore; Hari Raya Puasa is coming in two weeks’ time! Do you know what are the traditions of this festive occasion and how do people of the Muslim faith celebrate this day? What are the cultural practices and traditional food that people normally do and eat during this period?

If you are clueless, don’t worry as we have come up with a few things to celebrate this festival in Singapore. Read on to find out how you can celebrate this festive occasion this coming May!

Geylang Serai Bazaar

Ah, the annual Geylang Serai Bazaar returns this year (finally!). Say hello to pretty festival lights and delicious street food! For those who love to snack on traditional Malay goodies and street food, you have come to the right place.

Every year, Geylang Serai Bazaar comes alive with plenty of visitors from all over Singapore and overseas to look at the colourful lights and munch on yummy Malay delicacies. Here, you can find plenty of your pasar malam favourites such as Ramly Burger, Churros and *coughs* Bubble Tea. If you’d rather snack on traditional Malay goodies, you will be glad to know that they have classics like Vadai, Goreng Pisang and more.

Although this year’s bazaar is scaled down, it is still worth a visit and you can bask in the atmosphere while enjoying your favourite street food with your friends.

Kampong Glam

Located in Kandahar Street, the Kampong Glam Bazaar is another physical Ramadan Bazaar that you can check out this month. Organised by the One Kampong Gelam (OKG), the bazaar has about 20 F&B stalls offering a wide variety of street food such as kebabs and churros (yum!). Besides food and drinks, there will also be other activities such as a light show projected on the facade of Sultan Mosque, craft workshops that immerse you in the traditions and tours that showcase the heritage of Kampong Gelam.

If you are planning to go down with your friends, do participate in the festivities and learn about the history and culture of Kampong Gelam. It’s not everyday you get to learn and engage with Kampong Glam's heritage.

Other than a physical bazaar, there will also be virtual events such as music performances by local A-listers like Fuad Rahman, Syed Azmir and more, a virtual walkabout with 360-degree footage and even a kueh-making demonstration by chef Mel Dean.

Sounds exciting, doesn’t it? Tune in to Wisma Geylang Serai’s Facebook Page and check them out if you are interested!

Geylang Serai Neighbourhood

Besides the popular annual Geylang Serai Bazaar, there are actually lots of hidden gems within the Geylang Serai neighbourhood itself. The Geylang Serai Market is one of the busiest wet markets in Singapore; with the market on the first floor and a hawker centre on the second floor. It houses plenty of food stalls that serve authentic Malay cuisine such as Asam pedas stingray (sour and spicy stew), beef rendang (braised meat cooked in coconut milk and spices) and more. If you would love to try some yummy Malay food fare, head down to Geylang Serai and try them!

Nestled within the Geylang Serai neighbourhood lies SyraSkins, a henna studio and academy opened by 2 sisters, Mehroon Gulam & Syra Gulam. They sell a wide range of Henna products like the Henna Cone, Jagua Gel, Design e-books and many more. For Henna lovers, you’d be glad to know that they have online classes and in-house workshops where you can learn the art of Henna and practise them on yourself or your friends!

There is still much more to explore in the Geylang Serai neighbourhood that is filled with its own heritage and culture, waiting for you to uncover. Bring out the explorer in you and head down this festive period!
