Changi Airport has been voted the world's best airport more times than any other facility on the planet — and yet the most extraordinary thing about stopping over in Singapore is not the airport. It is the city waiting just 30 minutes away. Singapore is compact, immaculately connected, extraordinarily safe, and home to one of the world's most exciting food cultures. A complete meal of noodles and a cold drink costs under SGD 8. The distance between Changi Airport and the glittering waterfront of Marina Bay is a single MRT ride. Whether your layover is 6 hours or 48, Singapore rewards every minute you give it.

Do not underestimate what is achievable without leaving the terminal. Changi Airport is genuinely one of the world's great public spaces — with a butterfly garden housing a six-metre waterfall, free 24-hour cinemas, a rooftop swimming pool and jacuzzi at Terminal 1, themed gardens across four terminals, and hundreds of dining options ranging from Michelin-recognised dim sum to traditional Singaporean hawker food.
Jewel Changi Airport — the spectacular glass-and-steel dome connecting Terminals 1, 2, and 3 — is an attraction in its own right. The world's tallest indoor waterfall (40 metres) plunges through its centre, surrounded by indoor forest trails, a mirror maze, a hedge maze, and over 280 shops and restaurants. Note that entering Jewel from the transit zone requires clearing immigration — worth doing if your passport allows it and time permits.
Six hours is enough time to experience the heart of Singapore and eat extraordinarily well. The MRT from Changi takes approximately 30–45 minutes to the city centre and costs around SGD 1.50–2.00 each way. Taxis and ride-hailing (Grab) take 20–35 minutes and cost around SGD 20–35 depending on traffic. For travellers with more than five and a half hours of layover time, Changi Airport offers free guided sightseeing tours departing directly from the terminal — the Heritage Tour covering Kampong Glam, Little India, and Chinatown, and the City Sights Tour visiting Gardens by the Bay, Marina Bay Sands, and the Singapore Flyer.
The most iconic one-stop Singapore experience for stopover travellers. The Marina Bay waterfront promenade is open 24 hours and offers one of Asia's great urban panoramas — the three towers of Marina Bay Sands, the Esplanade arts centre, and the CBD skyline reflected in still water. Gardens by the Bay is spectacular by day and extraordinary after dark when the Supertrees are illuminated and the Garden Rhapsody light and sound show runs nightly at 7:45 PM and 8:45 PM.
A hawker centre meal should be on every Singapore stopover itinerary regardless of how little time you have. Maxwell Food Centre, a short walk from Chinatown MRT, is home to Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice — Singapore's most famous hawker stall — alongside dozens of other excellent stalls. A complete meal costs SGD 5–8. This is UNESCO-inscribed food culture at remarkably accessible prices.
Two days in Singapore is time enough to feel the city's remarkable breadth — its extraordinary food, its heritage neighbourhoods, its world-class museums, and its green spaces that make a dense equatorial city feel like a garden. Spend Day 1 on the Marina Bay waterfront, ArtScience Museum, and an evening at Gardens by the Bay. Dedicate Day 2 to neighbourhood exploration: Tiong Bahru for breakfast and art deco architecture, Kampong Glam for the golden-domed Sultan Mosque and Haji Lane street art, and the East Coast for chilli crab by the sea.
