Spain uses two plug types across most of its sockets. Knowing them in advance will save you a lot of head-scratching at the checkout counter.

The most common plug in Spain. Type C is a two-round-pin plug without an earth connection, used across most of continental Europe. It's compact, widely available, and fits the majority of Spanish sockets you'll encounter in hotels, cafés, and apartments.

Also widely used in Spain, Type F looks similar to Type C but adds two earth clips on the sides of the plug body. It's the same plug used in Germany, the Netherlands, and much of mainland Europe. Many Spanish sockets are designed to accept both Type C and Type F plugs, so the two types are largely interchangeable in practice.

If you're travelling from Singapore, you use Type G the three-flat-pin plug, which won't fit Spanish sockets. You'll need a plug adapter that converts Type G to Type C or F. 

Spain runs on 230V at 50Hz, the standard used across the European Union. This is the same voltage as Singapore, so Singaporean travellers are in the clear, your appliances and chargers are already built to handle it.

That said, if you're joining from the US, Canada, or Japan, take note. These countries use a lower mains voltage, typically between 100V and 127V. Appliances designed only for that lower voltage range, older hairdryers, certain straighteners, electric shavers without a dual-voltage switch, can overheat, malfunction, or become a safety risk if plugged directly into a 230V Spanish socket. Always check the label before plugging in.

If you are traveling from Singapore, you will only need a travel adapter and not a voltage converter.

Spain uses Type C and Type F sockets, and Singapore uses Type G. These plugs are different, but since both countries run on 230V, 50 Hz, everyday electronics like your phone, laptop and camera will work without the need for a voltage converter. What you need is a Type G to Type C or F travel adapter and you are all set.

For peace of mind, before you travel you can check the voltage rating of the other appliances you may want to bring, for example hairdryers and shavers. Most of the other appliances will be fine, but old hairdryers or other appliances will more than likely be incompatible.

The major chain to look for is MediaMarkt, with branches in most large Spanish cities and shopping centres. They carry a wide range of adapters and voltage converters at reasonable prices. El Corte Inglés department stores also have electronics floors worth checking.

Carrefour and Hipercor stock basic travel adapters in their household or electronics aisles. These are solid budget options if you're not after anything fancy.

In central Madrid, Barcelona's Gothic Quarter, Seville's Santa Cruz neighbourhood, and around major train stations, small general stores and tourist shops often sell basic adapters. Prices vary, but they're quick to find if you're in a rush.

A few habits worth building before you land:

Rather than buying a single-purpose adapter for Spain only, invest in a universal adapter that covers Type C, F, G, and A/B. It'll serve you across Europe and beyond, which quickly makes it worth the slightly higher upfront cost.

Before plugging anything in, find the label on the plug or power brick and look for the voltage input range. "100–240V" is dual-voltage and safe anywhere. A single rating like "120V" means you'll need a converter for Spain.

Spanish hotel rooms, particularly in older buildings, pensiones, and charming rural casas rurales, often have just one or two accessible sockets per room. A compact multi-port adapter or travel power strip solves this without needing to hunt down housekeeping.

Travel hairdryers, curling irons, and similar appliances should be unplugged when you're done using them, don't leave them sitting plugged in on standby. This is good practice anywhere, but especially important when travelling with devices that run close to their voltage limits.
