New Zealand Visa for Singaporeans: Why You Need an NZeTA Instead

New Zealand is one of the most breathtaking destinations on earth, a country of extraordinary natural drama where the fjords of Milford Sound plunge into still green waters, the geothermal landscapes of Rotorua bubble and steam, the vineyards of Marlborough stretch across sun-drenched valleys, and the adventure capital Queenstown offers everything from bungee jumping to ski slopes. For Singaporean travellers, New Zealand does not require a traditional visa, but it does require the NZeTA, a quick online pre-travel authorisation that must be secured before you fly. Here is everything you need to know.

Do Singaporeans Need a Visa for New Zealand?

Singapore citizens do not need a standard visitor visa to enter New Zealand. Singapore is among the visa-waiver countries whose passport holders can visit New Zealand for tourism, visiting family and friends, and certain business activities without applying for a full visa. However, visa-waiver travellers including Singaporeans are required to hold a valid NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) before boarding any flight or cruise to New Zealand. The NZeTA is not a visa, but it is a mandatory pre-travel authorisation linked electronically to your passport. Arriving without one will result in being denied boarding at departure.

New Zealand's major airports, including Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington, and Queenstown, are all well-served from Singapore. Compare and book flights to New Zealand on Traveloka to find the best fares across hundreds of airline options in one search.

What Is the NZeTA and How Does It Work?

The NZeTA is New Zealand's electronic travel authorisation system, introduced for visitors from visa-waiver countries. Once approved, the NZeTA is electronically linked to your passport and is valid for 2 years from the date of issue, allowing multiple short-stay visits to New Zealand within that period. Each individual stay may be up to 90 days.

The NZeTA is applied for through the official Immigration New Zealand website at nzeta.immigration.govt.nz or via the free NZeTA mobile app. Applying through the app costs less than applying via the website. There is no physical document issued: the authorisation is stored digitally and checked automatically when airlines scan your passport at check-in.

Alongside the NZeTA application fee, all visa-waiver travellers are required to pay the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) of NZD 100. This is paid once at the time of your NZeTA application and covers the full two-year validity of your NZeTA, regardless of how many trips you make to New Zealand within that period.

NZeTA Requirements for Singaporeans

The NZeTA application requires the following:

A valid Singapore passport. Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your intended stay in New Zealand.
A recent passport-style photograph meeting the specified requirements
A clear scan or photo of your Singapore passport's biographical page
A valid email address to receive your NZeTA approval
A valid credit or debit card for payment of the NZeTA fee and IVL

At the New Zealand border, you may also be asked to demonstrate that you have sufficient funds for your stay (at least NZD 1,000 per month, or NZD 400 per month if accommodation is pre-paid), and that you hold an onward or return ticket.

From the lakeside lodges of Wanaka to the boutique hotels of Auckland's waterfront, New Zealand's accommodation is as varied as its landscapes. Browse and book hotels across New Zealand on Traveloka, with real guest reviews and instant confirmation.

How to Apply for the New Zealand NZeTA

1.
Download the free NZeTA app (recommended — the application fee is lower via app) or visit the official website at nzeta.im migration.govt.nz.
2.
Complete the online application form with your passport details, personal information, and travel purpose.
3.
Upload your passport photograph and passport page scan.
4.
Pay the NZeTA application fee and the mandatory NZD 100 IVL using a credit or debit card.
5.
Await approval. Most applications are processed within 72 hours, with many approved significantly faster. Apply well in advance of your travel date.
6.
Receive your NZeTA approval by email. No physical document is issued. The NZeTA is linked electronically to your passport and will be verified at check-in and on arrival.

NZeTA and IVL Fees for Singaporeans

The total cost of obtaining an NZeTA consists of two components. The NZeTA application fee is NZD 17 when applied through the official mobile app, or NZD 23 when applied through the website. The International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy is a fixed NZD 100, paid once at the time of application and valid for the full two-year lifespan of your NZeTA. The total cost is therefore NZD 117 via the app or NZD 123 via the website. Both fees are non-refundable. There are no additional visa or entry fees for Singaporeans beyond this.

Tips for Your New Zealand NZeTA Application

  1. Apply through the official app to save NZD 6. The NZeTA mobile app is free to download, and the application process is identical to the website. There is no reason to use a third-party service for the NZeTA, as the application is straightforward and the official channels are the only authorised platforms.
  2. Apply well before your travel date. While most NZeTAs are approved within 72 hours, applying at least a week in advance is sensible. If your application is flagged for manual review, you will need time to respond.
  3. Your NZeTA is tied to your passport number. If your passport is renewed or changed after approval, your NZeTA becomes invalid and a new application is required. Always travel with the passport you used for your NZeTA application.
  4. The IVL is a one-time payment for the duration of your NZeTA. If you visit New Zealand multiple times within your two-year NZeTA validity, you do not pay the IVL again. When your NZeTA expires after two years, a new IVL payment will be required with your next application.
  5. Carry proof of funds and your return ticket. New Zealand immigration officers may ask to see evidence of sufficient funds for your stay and a confirmed onward or return ticket. Having these ready prevents delays at the border.
