Yogyakarta, a city in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) province, combines history, culture and modernity, presenting beautiful harmony. This city still maintains ancient cultural traditions led by the Sultan of Yogyakarta.

The variety of magnificent historical sites makes this area a cultural heritage. One of them is the Prambanan Temple, the largest Hindu temple in Indonesia and the most charming historical place in Yogyakarta.

Another temple is Borobudur Temple, the largest Buddhist temple in the world, located not far from Yogyakarta. During the annual Vesak ceremony, this temple will be filled with thousands of Buddhists who come on pilgrimage. This temple area is also home to the Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat Sultanate, located in the centre of Yogyakarta city. It’s proof that this city still preserves its culture today.

What is Yogyakarta Best Known for?

Yogyakarta is still strong with its traditions and culture. What still exists today?

1. Shadow Puppets

This art is part of the traditions and culture of Yogyakarta, preserved through wayang kulit. Wayang kulit involves leather puppets projected on a screen with gamelan music. Stories usually revolve around Ramayana or Mahabharata, skillfully staged by the puppeteer.

2. Batik

Batik is a traditional art of decorating cloth using a unique wax colouring technique. Yogyakarta is known as the best batik-producing area in Indonesia. The motifs, such as Parang, Kawung, and Sido Mukti, have unique characteristics. Batik-making is complicated and requires expertise. Yogyakarta batik cloth is still popular for daily wear and traditional events.

3. Sekaten Ceremony

This cultural celebration at the Yogyakarta Palace commemorates the birth of Prophet Muhammad SAW. It lasts one week and includes religious, artistic, and cultural activities.

The night market around the Grand Mosque is a highlight, offering delicious traditional food, handicrafts, toys, and Yogyakarta knick-knacks. The celebration also features gamelan performances, shadow puppets, dances, and traditional competitions involving the local community.

Yogyakarta’s Delicious Culinary that Your Tongue Must Taste

1. Gudeg

This traditional Yogyakarta dish is made from young jackfruit cooked with coconut milk. It is boiled with brown sugar and coconut milk for hours, producing a sweet and flavorful dish. There are two types of gudeg to try: dry and wet, or red and white gudeg.

If you're in Yogyakarta, don't forget to visit Gudeg Mbah Lindu Sosrowijayan. The recipe used at this restaurant was formulated by Mbah Lindu decades ago and is still being used today, even though Mbah Lindu has passed away at the age of 100. You can also try Gudeg Pawon, which is only open for 3 hours at night.

2. Klatak Satay

Craving for a late-night snack? Stop by Sate Klatak Pak Bari, known for its unique iron bicycle spokes grilling method. The goat meat is delicious, tender, and not greasy. Enjoy it with a hot goat's gule during cold weather.

3. Mangut Lele

Explore the culinary delights of Yogyakarta villages or "Blusukan Kampung". Mangut Lele, smoked catfish with spicy coconut milk sauce, has been sold by Mbah Marto since the 1960s. It is cooked and served straight from the kitchen.

4. Ice cream salad (rujak es krim)

This is a unique dessert that combines ice cream, garlic sauce, jicama, and fruit in one bowl. Perfect to enjoy on a hot day!

5. Joss Coffee

In Yogyakarta, try a cup of coffee mixed with hot charcoal. This coffee has health benefits as the activated carbon in the charcoal helps bind toxins in the body. Lik Man Angkringan near Yogyakarta Tugu Station has been serving this special joss coffee since the late 80s.

6. Wedang Ronde

A chewy dessert made from round sticky rice, hot ginger water mixed with coconut or palm sugar, fried peanuts, pieces of bread, and kolang kaling. Enjoy it during the rainy season to warm your body.
