But here's something worth knowing before you book: Koh Samui runs on its own weather calendar, one that doesn't match the rest of Thailand.

While islands like Phuket get soaked by the southwest monsoon around the middle of the year, Koh Samui, sitting on the Gulf of Thailand side, actually enjoys some of its best weather during that same stretch. Its rainy season shows up later, in the last quarter of the year, instead.

So knowing when to go here isn't just about picking a generically "good" month for Thailand. It's about understanding Samui's own rhythm. Here's the breakdown.

Most of Thailand, including popular spots like Phuket and Krabi, gets hit by the southwest monsoon from around May to October. Koh Samui, on the eastern Gulf coast, is largely shielded from that. Instead, its wet season arrives with the northeast monsoon, concentrated mainly in October and November.

This quirk is genuinely useful for travellers: if you're chasing sun during Thailand's usual rainy months, Koh Samui is often the better bet.

Here's what to expect across the year, and what each stretch is best suited for.

This is Koh Samui at its most reliable. Expect daytime temperatures around 25–30°C, low humidity, minimal rainfall, and calm, clear seas, ideal for beach days at Chaweng, Lamai, or the quieter Choeng Mon.

It's the best window for island-hopping to Ang Thong Marine Park, snorkelling trips, and simply lounging by the beach without worrying about sudden downpours. The trade-off is that this is also peak season, especially around the December to January holidays, so expect higher hotel rates and busier beaches.

Temperatures climb into the low 30s°C here, with humidity building steadily, but rainfall stays relatively low since Samui is largely spared from the mid-year monsoon that soaks the rest of Thailand. May and June in particular are considered a sweet spot: still great beach weather, but noticeably fewer crowds than peak season.

This period is well suited for beach clubs, water sports, and day trips to waterfalls like Na Muang, plus visits to the Samui Elephant Sanctuary. Hotel rates also tend to be gentler on the wallet compared to the December to March rush.

September starts to bring more frequent rain, but usually in short, sharp bursts rather than all-day downpours. October picks up further, and November is typically the wettest month of the year on the island.

This isn't necessarily a season to avoid entirely, since many showers clear up quickly and leave the rest of the day sunny, but it's worth building flexibility into your itinerary and leaning into indoor options like spa treatments, cooking classes, and Samui's food scene during the wetter stretches.

If postcard-perfect weather is your priority, December to March delivers the most consistent sunshine, just budget for higher prices and bigger crowds. If you want similarly great weather with a quieter island and better rates, May and June are an excellent, slightly under-the-radar alternative.

If your dates are flexible and you don't mind the occasional shower, September is a reasonable in-between, still relatively affordable, with rain that hasn't yet hit its peak intensity. The one stretch worth actively avoiding, unless you're chasing off-season prices and don't mind grey skies, is November.

This is one of the more convenient short-haul routes from Changi. Bangkok Airways and Scoot both operate direct flights straight into Samui International Airport, with a flight time of just under 2 hours, no need to connect through Bangkok.

Fares fluctuate through the year, with September typically ranking among the cheaper months to fly, lining up nicely with the island's quieter shoulder season. As with most routes, booking a few weeks to months ahead tends to land you a better fare.

Good news here too: Singapore passport holders can currently enter Thailand visa-free for up to 60 days for tourism, with no advance application needed. You'll just need a passport valid for at least six months from your entry date, and you'll be required to complete Thailand's Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online within 72 hours before your flight.

One thing to flag: Thailand's government has approved plans to shorten this visa-free stay to 30 days, though as of now the change hasn't yet taken effect pending official publication. It's worth double-checking the latest policy on the Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs website close to your travel date, just in case the shorter window has kicked in by the time you fly.
