The Bangkok–Chiang Mai train route is one of the most searched train routes in Thailand — it's cheaper than flying and comes with scenic views along the way. A lot of older guides still list the wrong departure station, since the State Railway of Thailand moved all long-distance departures from Hua Lamphong to Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal. This guide covers the current schedule, pricing, and booking process.

All trains to Chiang Mai now depart from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal (Bang Sue), not Hua Lamphong. The total distance is about 643 km, ending at Chiang Mai Railway Station. Journey time runs 10-13 hours depending on which train you book.

The daytime train (#7) is best if you want to watch the mountains and countryside pass by, but it's seats-only for the full journey. The overnight trains (#9 and #13) are better if you want to save your daytime hours — you sleep on the train and wake up already in Chiang Mai. Train #9 uses newer sleeper carriages, so it's generally the better pick over #13 if the price difference is small.

1st class AC sleeper is a private 2-berth cabin with a lockable door and its own washbasin — best for maximum privacy. 2nd class AC sleeper is an open berth with a curtain for privacy, split into upper and lower bunks (lower bunks are slightly wider and have a better view, but cost more). 2nd class fan sleeper is cheaper but has no air-con. 2nd and 3rd class seats have no sleeping berth at all, better suited to daytime trains or tighter budgets.

The official booking channel is dticket.railway.co.th, run by the State Railway of Thailand. You need to register first with your full name as it appears on your passport or ID, passport number, nationality, and a working email address, then verify via the confirmation link before logging in to search and book. If registering there feels like too much hassle, foreign travelers can also book through third-party sites like 12Go or Baolau, which are simpler but usually charge a small service fee.

The booking window depends on what percentage of the train's full route you're traveling. If you're covering 60% or more of the route (Bangkok–Chiang Mai qualifies), you can book up to 180 days ahead. For 25-59% of the route, it's 30 days ahead, and under 25%, only 1 day ahead. Since train #9 is the most popular and sleeper berths are limited, book at least 1-2 months ahead during festivals or long holidays.

Flying takes about 1 hour 20 minutes — fastest but pricier, and you skip the scenery. Buses take roughly the same time as the overnight train (about 9-10 hours) and run more frequently, but don't offer real sleeper beds or the freedom to walk around like a train does. The overnight train suits travelers who want to save daytime hours, sleep in an actual bed, and arrive ready to start sightseeing immediately — without losing a full day to travel.

Bring a small padlock for your bag, since 2nd class sleeper berths are open, not private rooms. Pack a light jacket — the air-con gets fairly cold overnight. Food and drinks are sold on board but choices are limited, so bringing your own snacks is a good idea. Arrive at Krung Thep Aphiwat at least 30-45 minutes early, since the new station is large and finding your platform can take longer than expected.
