As the winner of World’s Best First Class Airline Lounge and Best Airline Cabin Cleanliness in Skytrax World Airline Awards 2016, Cathay Pacific is a dominant Hong Kong airline headquartered in Chek Lap Kok. The airline is a co-founder of oneworld® alliance. Today, the airline has 90 flight routes in 35 countries across Asia Pacific, Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Africa. Up until today, Cathay Pacific has served its passengers with four flight classes: Economy Class, Premium Economy Class, Business Class, and First Class.
The Cathay Pacific Economy Class offers a convenient flight complete with a seamless check-in experience, friendly flight attendants, and a plethora of facilities, such as a personal compartment to place your phone and drinking glass, an adjustable seat back, a small table for those looking to catch up on work, and in-flight entertainment, such as movies, TV series, and music supported by Studio CX for both short and long-haul flights.
In the Economy Class of a long-haul flight, passengers are served with fours kinds of meal. Opened by salad and followed by a choice of main courses such as chicken and pasta, passengers are also served ice cream for dessert and coffee or tea as accompanying beverage. For short-haul flights, mushroom salad is served as appetizer, a choice of chicken or fish as main course, and mousse cake as dessert. For beverages, passengers can choose between coffee or tea.
Premium Economy passengers can enjoy wider seats, which can also be tilted up to 8 inches. The seats are equipped with a wide calf rest, a footrest, and a headrest to guarantee the passengers’ comfort. In-flight entertainment such as film, TV, and music can be enjoyed through the 10.6-inch screen using the soundproof headphone. Premium Economy Class passengers also receive a free amenity pouch containing socks, a blindfold, earplugs, and a set of toothbrush and toothpaste.
Premium Economy passengers are served a variety of menu, from Chinese delicacies to international cuisines. For example, shrimp salad as appetizer can be combined with beef steak or paccheri. Special ice cream can be the delightful dessert, while coffee and tea are always served as the beverages. On long-haul flights, a breakfast menu is always available. The menu includes an appetizer of fresh fruit cuts and a choice of main course such as a breakfast platter filled with sausages, eggs, and toasts, or seafood. Coffee and tea are served as the beverages.
When flying Business Class, more convenience is guaranteed by the wide seating and greater privacy. The 21-inch seat that can be tilted up to 47 inches and is automatically operated by an electrical system, is equipped with a footrest for total relaxation while flying. A private 15.4-inch screen completed with AVOD also enables an unforgettable in-flight entertainment experience, exclusive for Business Class passengers.
Collaborating with chefs from top restaurants and hotels, Cathay Pacific commits to giving the best meals for its Business Class passengers. Passengers can choose a lighter and healthier menu complete with award-winning wine to make their dining experience onboard a perfect one. A restaurant dinner on a long-haul flight, for instance, can be started with salmon gravlax, roasted Australian tenderloin beef with fourme d’ambert cheese for main course, and fruit cuts and black forest cake as desserts. For beverages, passengers can choose between illy coffee and Jing tea.
A long-haul flight on First Class will never be exhausting because here passengers are completely pampered with special seats. The seats can transformed into a small bed, 36 inches in width and 81 inches in length. The seats are also built with a massage machine, a private closet, and a 17-inch private TV screen. With a thick mattress and 500-thread-count cotton duvets, pillows, and cushions, the exhaustion from a long-haul flight will cease to exist and be replaced by a comfortable travel.
First Class passengers have the freedom to choose their own menu and when to have them during the flight. When the passengers are ready for their meal, the cabin crew will set the dinner on the passenger's table. A typical First Class dining starts with exclusive caviar and Krug champagne, followed by a choice of an international dish, such as tuna or Angus beef striploin, or a Chinese one, which ranges from Peking duck salad to fresh abalone, and ends with fresh forest berries topped with ginger syrup or a Belgian chocolate pudding. During the meal, passengers also get to enjoy Arenberger and French Brie cheeses, as well as illy coffee and Jing tea.

Cathay Pacific was founded by Australian Sydney de Kantzow and American Roy Farrell in January 1946. Both were former military pilots who frequently flew across the Himalaya Mountain. Farrell bought the first Cathay Pacific aircraft in New York on 6 October 1945. It was a Douglas DC-3 named Betsy. The aircraft is currently on display at the Hong Kong Science Museum. The first commercial Cathay Pacific flight delivered clothing from Sydney to Shanghai. However, Cathay Pacific had a rocky start. Since its establishment, Cathay Pacific had always been banned by the authorities in Shanghai, which prompted its move to Hong Kong. In Hong Kong, Farrell and de Kantzow registered their business on 24 September 1946 under the name Cathay Pacific. “Cathay” was chosen because it is the ancient name of China, while “Pacific” came from Farrell’s speculation that someday the airline could fly across the Pacific Ocean (which became a reality in 1970s). In 1948, Butterfield & Swire (known today as the Swire Group) bought 45% of Cathay Pacific shares. Later on, the Australian National Airways acquired a 35% stake, while Farrell and de Kantzow took the remaining 10%. Currently, the airline is under the ownership of the Swire Group. At the end of 1940s, the Hong Kong Government split the aviation market between Cathay Pacific and the only local competitor, Hong Kong Airways. Cathay Pacific was assigned to serve the southern routes (Southeast Asia and Australia), while Hong Kong Airways the northern routes (China, Korea, and Japan). However, due to the independence of the People's Republic of China and the Korean War, the northern route eventually became very limited. Therefore in 1959, Cathay Pacific acquired the Hong Kong Airways, making it the dominant airline in Hong Kong. In January 1990, Cathay Pacific acquired a majority stake of Dragonair, which later changed its name to Cathay Dragon in 2016. On 21 September 1998, Cathay Pacific joined forces with American Airlines, British Airways, Canadian Airlines, and Qantas to form oneworld® airline alliance. Until now, oneworld® alliance has had 15 airline members.
