Noi Bai International Airport (Nội Bài in Vietnamese) is the main airport for Hanoi and northern Vietnam. It is a hub for Vietnam Airlines and handles a large share of the country's domestic and international flights. The IATA code is HAN and the ICAO code is VVNB.
The airport lies in Sóc Sơn district, north of the capital, around 30 to 35 km from central Hanoi. Most drivers use the expressway over the Nhật Tân Bridge, which links the airport road directly with the city.
A free shuttle runs between the two terminals. Both buildings have restaurants, shops, lounges and currency exchange. Terminal 2 also has duty-free shopping for departing international passengers.
Vietnam Airlines flies the largest network from Noi Bai. VietJet Air and Bamboo Airways add many domestic routes, and the Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City link is one of the country's most frequent. Foreign carriers, including AirAsia, Cathay Pacific, Korean Air and Singapore Airlines, connect Hanoi with cities across Asia.
Many first-time visitors base themselves in the Old Quarter, a short walk from Hoan Kiem Lake. The Temple of Literature and the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum complex are also in the city. Hanoi is the usual starting point for trips to Ha Long Bay and the mountains of Sa Pa.
Check whether your flight leaves from Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 before you set off, as they are separate buildings. Traffic into Hanoi can be heavy in the late afternoon, so leave a buffer. Bus 86 runs only during the day; late arrivals are better off with a taxi.
