Fukuoka is the largest city on Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan's four main islands, and a place that feels both big and easy-going. It blends a busy merchant quarter in Hakata with the shopping streets of Tenjin, a seaside promenade and open-air food stalls along the river. For many Singaporeans it is the start of a Kyushu road trip to hot springs and volcanoes, or a short city break built around ramen and shrines. Comparing flights to Fukuoka on Traveloka helps you weigh up times, baggage and fares on a single screen.
Fukuoka Airport is famous for being one of the most central major airports in Japan. It lies just east of the city centre, so Hakata Station and the Tenjin district are only a few subway stops away, and approaching aircraft pass low over the rooftops.
There are separate domestic and international terminals on opposite sides of the runway. The international terminal handles flights from Singapore and other overseas cities, while the domestic terminal serves routes to Tokyo, Osaka, Okinawa and elsewhere in Japan. Free shuttle buses run between the two, so leave time for the transfer if you are connecting to a domestic flight.
The subway's Kuko Line starts at the domestic terminal and runs straight to Hakata and Tenjin, which is the quickest way into town for most visitors. From the international side, take the shuttle bus to the domestic terminal station, or catch a direct bus to Hakata Station. Taxis queue outside both terminals and are reasonable for groups with luggage.
Nonstop flights between Singapore and Fukuoka run on some schedules, and connections via other Asian hubs or via Tokyo and Osaka are common alternatives. Switch on the Direct filter to check what is flying on your dates. If you are already in Japan, the Tokyo to Fukuoka flight is one of the country's busiest domestic routes, departing from both Haneda and Narita, and it is often a practical way to fit Kyushu into a longer itinerary.
Planning a wider trip? Some travellers fly into Fukuoka and out of another Kyushu city such as Kagoshima or Nagasaki, returning by a different route. Multi-city searches make it easy to compare that against a simple return ticket.
Spring, from late March into April, brings cherry blossoms to Maizuru Park and the riverbanks, while autumn colours peak around November. Early summer has a rainy season, and late summer can bring typhoons along with heat and humidity. Winters are cool rather than harsh, with occasional light snow in the surrounding hills.
From Singapore, flights fill up during the June and December school holidays and around Chinese New Year. Within Japan, Golden Week in spring and the Obon holiday in August are the busiest domestic travel periods, and the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival in July draws big crowds. The monthly fare chart on this page shows which months usually have more room.
This great shrine dedicated to the patron of scholarship sits in the town of Dazaifu, an easy train ride from the city. Students come to pray before exams, and the approach street is lined with shops selling warm umegae mochi.
A large lake with a walking path loops through the middle of Ohori Park, next to the stone walls of the old Fukuoka Castle. It is one of the best places in town for cherry blossoms and for a gentle morning jog.
Every evening, small open-air food stalls pop up along the river on Nakasu island and in Tenjin. Squeezing onto a bench next to locals over ramen and grilled skewers is a quintessential Fukuoka experience.
An artificial beach and boardwalk front the bay, overlooked by the slender Fukuoka Tower. The observation deck gives a fine view of Hakata Bay, especially at sunset.
West of the city, the Itoshima coast has surf beaches, seaside cafes and the photogenic wedded rocks of Futamigaura, perfect for a relaxed day out by car.
Hakata, around the main railway station, is the most practical base if you plan day trips by train or bullet train. Tenjin is the shopping and nightlife centre, full of department stores and underground arcades. Nakasu and the adjacent Kawabata area put you close to the yatai stalls and the older shopping streets, while Gion is quieter and dotted with temples. Families who want the seaside often pick the Momochi area.
Fukuoka's signature dish is ramen in a rich, milky pork-bone broth with thin, firm noodles. Order a kaedama, an extra serving of noodles, when you reach the bottom of the bowl.
A hearty hotpot of beef offal simmered with cabbage, chives and garlic in a soy or miso broth, often finished with noodles in the leftover soup.
Spicy marinated pollock roe is a local speciality, eaten over rice, stuffed into rice balls or stirred through pasta, and a favourite souvenir to bring home.
This gentle chicken hotpot, cooked in a cloudy collagen-rich broth and dipped in ponzu, is a warming dinner on a cool evening.
