Hue sits on the banks of the Perfume River in central Vietnam and was the seat of the Nguyen emperors, the country's last royal dynasty. Its walled citadel, riverside pagodas and grand royal tombs make it one of the most rewarding heritage stops in Southeast Asia, while its cooking is famously bold and spicy. Most travellers booking flights to Hue from Singapore pair the city with Da Nang and Hoi An further south, turning a short getaway into a proper tour of the central coast.
Hue is served by Phu Bai International Airport, airport code HUI. It lies south of the city in the Huong Thuy area, close to the main north-south highway, so the drive into town is straightforward and usually quick outside rush hour. Because it is the only commercial airport for Hue, there is no choice of airport to worry about when you search.
Phu Bai is mainly a domestic airport, and its passenger facilities are compact and easy to navigate. Check-in counters, security and the arrivals hall are close together, which keeps walking to a minimum. Facilities are simpler than at the big hubs, so it is worth eating or picking up snacks before a late departure.
Metered taxis wait outside arrivals, and ride-hailing apps work well in Hue if you prefer an agreed fare shown upfront. An airport shuttle bus also runs towards the city centre and is a good budget option for light packers. Many hotels in the old quarter and along the river arrange pickups on request, which is handy if you land in the evening.
From Changi, the usual way to reach Hue is with one connection through a larger Vietnamese city such as Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi, where domestic flights to Phu Bai leave throughout the day. Use the Direct filter on the results page to see whether a nonstop option is offered on your date, and compare total journey times rather than just the first leg. Another popular approach is to fly into Da Nang, which has more international routes, then travel to Hue by road or rail along the coast. Choose whichever gives you the connection that suits your schedule best.
Hue has a distinct rainy season from roughly September to December, when heavy downpours and occasional typhoons can bring flooding along the river. February to April is generally the most comfortable time, with milder temperatures and spring colour in the gardens. From May to August the weather turns hot and humid, though the skies are usually drier and the long evenings suit walking the riverfront.
Demand from Singapore rises during the June and December school holidays and around Chinese New Year, while Tet, the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, is a busy period for domestic flights across Vietnam. Many shops close for several days over Tet, so plan around it or embrace the festive atmosphere. The price chart on this page shows how fares usually move month by month, which helps you spot quieter periods.
The walled Imperial City is the heart of any visit. Inside the moats you will find ceremonial gates, courtyards, restored halls and the remains of the Forbidden Purple City once reserved for the emperor's family. Allow a generous half day and start early to avoid the midday heat.
Perched on a low hill above the Perfume River, Thien Mu Pagoda is recognisable by its seven-storey tower. It remains an active temple, so dress modestly. Many visitors arrive by dragon boat from the city, which doubles as a relaxed river cruise.
The emperors built elaborate mausoleums in the hills outside the city. The tombs of Tu Duc, Minh Mang and Khai Dinh are the best known, each with a very different style, from lakeside pavilions to intricate glass and porcelain mosaics. Hiring a car or motorbike driver lets you see several in a day.
Hue's largest market sits on the riverbank near Truong Tien Bridge. It is a busy, local place to browse conical hats, dried goods and sesame sweets, and the food stalls inside are a good introduction to the city's specialities.
South of the city, the coastal road climbs over the Hai Van Pass towards Da Nang, with sweeping views of mountains and sea. Lang Co, a quiet lagoon and beach town along the way, makes a pleasant stop for lunch.
Most visitors base themselves on the south bank of the Perfume River, around Le Loi Street and the lanes near Pham Ngu Lao, where cafes, restaurants and boutique stays are within walking distance of the river. The north bank, inside or near the Citadel walls, is quieter and puts you close to the monuments. For a slower pace, look at garden houses in the Kim Long area upstream, or stays near Thuan An beach if you want sea air after sightseeing.
The city's signature noodle soup uses thick round rice noodles in a beef broth fragrant with lemongrass and chilli. It is heartier and spicier than the pho most visitors know, and locals often eat it for breakfast.
This humble dish combines rice with tiny baby clams, herbs, peanuts, crispy pork crackling and a splash of chilli. It is a true Hue street food and costs little at local stalls.
Royal cooking left Hue with many small, delicate dishes. Banh beo are steamed rice cakes topped with dried shrimp and crispy shallots, while banh nam are flat rice parcels wrapped in banana leaf.
End the day with a glass of che, the local sweet soup made with beans, lotus seeds, jelly and coconut milk. Stalls by the river offer dozens of versions.
The old royal capital is an easy add-on to any central Vietnam trip. Compare flight to Hue options on Traveloka and let a Price Alert watch your dates before you set off from Changi.
