Location

Jeju International Airport sits on the edge of Jeju City (Jeju-si), close to the northern coastline and only a short ride from both the old town and the newer Shin Jeju district. It is the island's only commercial airport, and the busy air corridor between Seoul and Jeju is one of the most heavily travelled domestic routes anywhere in the world.

Terminals

CJU has separate domestic and international areas within its terminal complex. Flights from abroad, including any from Singapore, arrive at the international side, where immigration and customs are handled. If you connect from Seoul or Busan, you will land at the domestic side instead, so check your e-ticket to know where to meet your transfer.

Getting to and from the airport

Airport limousine buses link CJU with Seogwipo, the Jungmun resort area and other parts of the island, while regular city buses cover Jeju-si. Taxis queue outside arrivals and are good value for short hops into town. Many visitors pick up a rental car, since Jeju's sights are spread out, though foreign drivers need to check the licence documents Korea accepts before they travel. There is no rail network on the island.

Known as Sunrise Peak, this tuff cone on the east coast rose from the sea in an ancient eruption. A stairway climbs to the crater rim, where dawn views over the ocean draw crowds every morning.

Hallasan National Park

South Korea's highest mountain sits at the centre of the island. Well-marked trails climb through forest to the summit crater lake, and shorter routes suit casual walkers.

Manjanggul Lava Tube

Part of Jeju's UNESCO-listed volcanic landscape, this long underground tunnel was carved by flowing lava, with a lit section for visitors. Check that it is open before you go, since access is sometimes closed for safety and conservation work.

Udo Island

A short ferry ride from the east coast, Udo is known for its white-sand beaches, stone walls and peanut ice cream. Cycling around it is a favourite half-day outing.

Hyeopjae Beach

On the west coast, this shallow, emerald-coloured beach faces the small island of Biyangdo and is one of the best spots for a swim in summer.

Jeju City is the practical base: the area around Nohyeong-dong and Yeon-dong in Shin Jeju has restaurants, shopping and quick access to CJU, while the old town near Dongmun Market is good for local eating. Aewol on the northwest coast is loved for its seaside cafes, and Hamdeok to the northeast has a lovely beach. Seogwipo on the south coast is quieter, closer to waterfalls and coastal walks, and the Jungmun area nearby is where most large resorts cluster. Jeonbok-juk is a creamy rice porridge cooked with abalone, its green tint coming from the shellfish's innards. It is a comforting breakfast, especially near the coast.

Gogi-guksu

Thick wheat noodles in a rich pork broth topped with slices of boiled pork, a humble island classic.

Hallabong

This large, sweet citrus fruit with a knobbly top is grown across Jeju, eaten fresh or in juices, desserts and snacks.
