Khon Kaen is the main city of Thailand's northeast, the region Thais call Isan. It is a university town and commercial centre with a relaxed pace, a lakeside heart and some of the best grilled chicken in the country. Visitors come for silk villages, dinosaur fossils, temples and Isan food, or to visit friends and family in the region. If you are looking at Singapore to Khon Kaen routes, this page covers the airport, the seasons, where to stay and what to eat.
Khon Kaen Airport (KKC) lies on the northwestern edge of the city, a short drive from the centre along the main highway that runs north towards Udon Thani. It is the principal airport for the central Isan provinces, and many travellers heading to neighbouring towns such as Kalasin or Maha Sarakham also fly in here.
The airport has one passenger terminal that mainly handles domestic flights, with check-in, a small shopping area and eateries on site. Because it is compact, walking from the gate to the arrivals hall is quick, which helps if someone is waiting to meet you.
Metered taxis and airport transfer services wait outside arrivals and can take you to hotels in the city centre. Ride-hailing apps operate in Khon Kaen as well, and car rental counters are useful if you plan to explore Isan by road. City songthaews, the shared pick-up trucks with bench seats, cover many routes in town once you are settled.
Most trips from Singapore to Khon Kaen connect through Bangkok, where domestic services to Khon Kaen leave from both Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang. Check which Bangkok airport your connection uses before you book, because transferring between the two means a separate road journey across the city. Traveloka's Direct filter shows whether any non-stop options are on sale from your connecting city for your dates.
If you book the international and domestic legs separately, allow extra time for immigration, collecting bags and checking in again in Bangkok. A single itinerary with both legs is usually simpler. Check the entry requirements for your passport before you fly, and keep your onward booking details handy for arrival.
The cool season from about November to February is the most pleasant time in Khon Kaen, with dry weather and cooler nights. March to May is hot and dusty, while the rainy season from roughly June to October turns the rice fields green and brings heavy afternoon showers. Rain rarely stops a city visit, but road trips into the countryside can be slower.
Songkran in April is huge here, and Khon Kaen hosts one of the country's biggest water fights along Khao Niao Road, so flights and rooms fill quickly. The Silk and Phuk Siao Festival late in the year also draws crowds. From Singapore, demand climbs in the June and December school holidays and around Chinese New Year. The fare chart on this page helps you compare months.
This large lake in the city centre is where Khon Kaen comes to exercise, picnic and watch the sunset. A walking and cycling path loops around the shore, with food stalls, temples and small parks along the way.
Standing beside the lake at Wat Nong Wang, this nine-tiered pagoda is richly decorated with murals of Isan life and history. Climb to the top floor for a sweeping view over the water and the city skyline.
West of the city, the Phu Wiang area is one of the most important dinosaur fossil sites in Southeast Asia. The museum displays skeletons and life-size models, and nearby dig sites in the national park show fossils where they were found.
Chonnabot is known for mudmee, the ikat silk that Isan weavers tie-dye before it goes on the loom. Workshops and shops let you watch the process and buy fabric directly from the families who make it.
North of town, the reservoir behind Ubolratana Dam is a favourite weekend escape, with floating restaurants, viewpoints and quiet roads for a scenic drive.
The city centre around Klang Mueang Road puts you close to restaurants, shopping and the evening food markets. It is the easiest area for a short stay without a car. The streets near Bueng Kaen Nakhon are a little calmer and suit travellers who want morning walks around the lake.
The area around Khon Kaen University in the northwest is lively with cafés and student eateries and is also close to the airport. If you are visiting for business, the newer developments along Mittraphap Road offer easy highway access and large shopping centres.
Isan cooking is bold, sour, spicy and eaten with sticky rice by hand, and Khon Kaen is one of the best places to try it.
Grilled chicken marinated in garlic, coriander root and pepper is a local pride, with the version from the Khao Suan Kwang district famous across Thailand. It comes with sticky rice and a tamarind chilli dipping sauce.
Green papaya salad is pounded to order in a clay mortar. Try the Isan style with fermented fish sauce for a deeper, funkier flavour, or ask for Thai style if you prefer it sweeter.
Minced meat tossed with lime, chilli, fish sauce, fresh herbs and toasted ground rice makes a bright, crunchy salad. It is a staple at every Isan meal.
These sour fermented pork and rice sausages are grilled over charcoal and served with ginger, chilli and cabbage. Look for them at evening markets and grill stalls around town.
