Kunming, the capital of Yunnan province in south-west China, is known across the country as the Spring City. Sitting on a high plateau at around 1,900 metres, it enjoys mild weather in almost every month, and flowers seem to bloom on every street corner. Many travellers book flights to Kunming as the starting point for a wider Yunnan journey, with the old towns of Dali and Lijiang, the tea hills of Pu'er and the tropical south of Xishuangbanna all within reach. Traveloka makes it easy to compare Singapore to Kunming flights, as well as routes from other cities in the region.
Kunming Changshui International Airport (KMG) is on the north-eastern side of the city, on raised ground well away from the older urban districts. It replaced the old Wujiaba airport that once stood close to the centre, and today it is one of the busiest airports in western China and an important hub for routes to South-east Asia and South Asia.
Passenger flights use one large main terminal, recognisable by its sweeping roof held up by curved, ribbon-like steel arches. Domestic and international areas are separated inside the building, so follow the signs for international arrivals and immigration when you land from Singapore. Always check the latest terminal details on your e-ticket, as airport facilities in fast-growing Chinese cities are expanded from time to time.
Kunming Metro Line 6 runs from the airport towards the city, connecting with other metro lines for onward journeys to the centre. Airport shuttle buses serve several districts, and official taxis queue outside arrivals and use the meter. Ride-hailing apps are widely used in Kunming, and a mobile payment app linked to your card will make taxis, metro tickets and shopping much simpler.
Nonstop flights link Changi with Kunming, and there are many one-stop options through other Chinese cities and regional hubs. Tick the Direct filter to see only nonstop services, then compare departure times, baggage allowances and fare conditions. Since Kunming has just one main airport, the key choice is between a direct flight and a connection that might suit your schedule better.
Kunming also links well with the rest of China and South-east Asia. If you are flying in from Shanghai, Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur, or planning to combine Kunming with other Chinese cities, you can search multi-city trips on Traveloka and keep every booking in one place. Onward flights and high-speed trains from Kunming reach much of Yunnan and beyond.
Thanks to its altitude, Kunming stays temperate all year. The dry season from about November to April brings sunny days, cool nights and very clear skies, and it is the favourite time for sightseeing. The wet season from roughly May to October brings afternoon showers and lush green countryside, and it is also the best time to try Yunnan's famous wild mushrooms. The sun is strong at this height, so pack sunscreen and a light jacket whatever the month.
For Singapore travellers, demand for Kunming flights rises during the June and December school holidays and around Chinese New Year. Within China, the Spring Festival, the May Day holiday and the National Day Golden Week in early October bring big domestic crowds to Kunming and the rest of Yunnan. The fare chart on this page shows how prices move across the year, and a Price Alert helps you catch a good moment to book.
Cuihu, or Green Lake, is the city's favourite park, with willow-lined causeways, pavilions and dancing groups in the evenings. In winter, flocks of black-headed gulls migrate here and gather over the water, where people come to feed them.
Yunnan's largest lake stretches along the south-west edge of Kunming. Above it rise the Western Hills, where a path cut into the cliffs leads to the Dragon Gate, a series of temples and grottoes with sweeping views over the water.
Outside the city in Shilin, this UNESCO-listed landscape of towering limestone pillars looks like a petrified forest. Paths wind through narrow passages between the rocks, and the area is home to the Sani people, a branch of the Yi ethnic group.
Kunming's most important Buddhist temple sits near Green Lake, with a pond at its centre crossed by elegant bridges and surrounded by carved halls.
On the shores of Dianchi, this open-air park introduces the architecture, dress and festivals of Yunnan's many ethnic groups in a single, easy visit.
The area around Green Lake in Wuhua district is the most pleasant base, with leafy streets, the university quarter and plenty of cafes. Nanping Street and the Jinbi Square area are central and good for shopping and nightlife. Travellers heading to the railway station for trains to Dali, Lijiang or across the border to Laos may prefer staying near Kunming South or Kunming Railway Station. The Guandu old town area in the south-east offers a quieter, more traditional atmosphere.
Yunnan's best-known noodle dish, eaten all over Kunming, arrives as a bowl of piping hot broth with a tray of raw ingredients such as thin slices of meat, quail egg, vegetables and rice noodles. You add them to the broth yourself and they cook in the heat.
Qiguo ji is chicken slowly cooked in a special clay pot with a spout in the middle, which fills with steam and produces a clear, intensely flavoured soup.
During the wet season, Yunnan's markets overflow with wild mushrooms, and restaurants serve them in rich hotpots. Eat at established restaurants and follow the staff's cooking advice.
Xianhua bing are flaky pastries filled with sweet rose petal paste, a fragrant Kunming snack sold at bakeries and markets throughout the city.
With its gentle climate, colourful markets and easy access to the rest of Yunnan, Kunming is a rewarding city break from Singapore. Set a Price Alert for flights to Kunming on Traveloka and book once the fare and timing look right for your Yunnan plans.
