Lombok is the island just east of Bali in Indonesia's West Nusa Tenggara province, known for surf beaches, the towering volcano Mount Rinjani and the car-free Gili Islands off its northwest coast. It feels less developed than its neighbour, with Sasak villages, rice terraces and long stretches of empty sand. Travellers book flights to Lombok for trekking, diving, surfing and slow beach days, and the island works equally well as a standalone holiday or combined with Bali.
Lombok International Airport (LOP), officially Zainuddin Abdul Madjid International Airport, is near Praya in Central Lombok. Its position in the south of the island puts it close to Kuta Lombok and the Mandalika coast, while Mataram, Senggigi and the harbour for the Gili Islands lie further north.
A single terminal handles both domestic and international flights, with check-in, cafes, money changers and SIM card stalls. Signage is in English and Indonesian, and the arrivals hall has counters for official taxis and shuttle buses.
Official airport taxis are the most straightforward option, with fares set at the counter by destination. Airport buses run towards Mataram and Senggigi, and many accommodations arrange private pick-ups for a set price. Heading to the Gili Islands, drive north to Bangsal or Teluk Kodek and take a boat across; some operators sell combined road and boat transfers.
International links into Lombok are fewer than into Bali, so start your search from Singapore and turn on the Direct filter to check whether a nonstop Singapore to Lombok flight is available for your dates. If not, connect through Jakarta, Denpasar in Bali or Kuala Lumpur, where regular domestic and regional flights continue to Lombok. Another choice is flying to Bali and crossing by fast boat, though sea conditions can affect schedules. On connections, a single booking that covers both legs gives you more protection than two separate tickets.
Lombok's dry season, roughly April to October, brings sunny days, calmer seas for the Gili boats and the best conditions for climbing Mount Rinjani. The wet season from about November to March brings heavy afternoon rain and the trekking routes are often closed during the wettest months. Surf is good on the south coast for much of the year. From Singapore, the June and December school holidays and Chinese New Year are the peak times, and Indonesian holidays such as Lebaran and big events at the Mandalika circuit can fill flights and rooms quickly.
Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air are three small coral islands with no cars, clear water and plenty of turtles. Trawangan is the liveliest, Meno the quietest and Air sits comfortably in between.
Indonesia's second highest volcano rises over northern Lombok. Multi-day treks climb to the crater rim above the Segara Anak lake, and Senaru village at the foot of the mountain is the classic base.
The south coast around Kuta Lombok is lined with white-sand bays such as Tanjung Aan and Mawun, backed by green hills. The Mandalika area is also home to a motorsport circuit that hosts international races.
This traditional Sasak village near the airport shows thatched rice barns, handwoven textiles and daily village life, and local guides explain the customs and architecture.
Near Senaru, a forest walk leads to two impressive waterfalls fed by Rinjani's slopes. They are especially powerful after the rains.
Kuta and the Mandalika coast suit surfers and beach lovers and are close to the airport. Senggigi on the west coast offers sunsets, restaurants and easy access to the Gili boats. Mataram, the provincial capital, is practical for business trips and short stays. The Gili Islands are ideal for diving and relaxed island life, while Senaru is the natural choice before or after a Rinjani trek. Travellers seeking remote beaches can look at the southwest peninsula of Sekotong and its small offshore islands.
Lombok's signature dish is grilled or fried young chicken coated in a fiery chilli paste. It is traditionally eaten with rice and plecing kangkung.
Water spinach is blanched and topped with a spicy tomato sambal and crunchy peanuts, creating a fresh, punchy side dish.
Named after the Rembiga neighbourhood of Mataram, these beef skewers are marinated in a sweet and spicy paste before grilling, giving them a deep caramelised flavour.
A spicy rice dish from Central Lombok served with shredded chilli chicken, fried soybeans and peanuts, often wrapped in paper for a quick meal.
From the Gili Islands to the crater rim of Rinjani, Lombok offers a different side of Indonesia. Search flights to Lombok on Traveloka, compare routes from Singapore, set a Price Alert for your dates and manage your booking with Easy Reschedule if plans change.
