Linate is the airport Milanese people call their own. Tucked just east of the city, it is the quickest way to reach the centre of Milan by air, and business travellers value it for exactly that reason. Travellers from Singapore rarely fly here nonstop, but booking flights to Milan Linate makes a lot of sense when you are already moving around Europe, or when you connect through another European hub and want to step off the plane only minutes away from the Duomo.
Linate sits about 7 km east of the historic centre, on the edge of the city next to the Idroscalo, a large artificial lake that locals use for rowing, swimming and summer events. Its closeness to the centre is its biggest advantage over Malpensa and Bergamo, and it is especially handy for short visits, meetings and weekend breaks.
The airport works from a single passenger terminal, with departures and arrivals on different levels. It is compact and easy to find your way around, which keeps walking distances short from the gate to the exit. The building was renovated in recent years and has shops, cafés and airline lounges.
Metro line M4, the blue line, starts right at the airport and runs through the city, stopping at San Babila, a short walk from the Duomo. City buses also link Linate with the centre. Taxis and ride-hailing cars wait outside arrivals, and because the distance is short, a taxi into central Milan is a practical option for groups.
Linate mainly serves routes within Italy and to other European cities, and the airport has restrictions on longer-distance services. From Singapore, the usual approach is a connecting itinerary that changes planes at a European hub before the final short flight into Linate. On Traveloka, search for your city pair and then compare the stops, layover times and arrival times. The direct-flight filter is useful when you are starting from another European city.
If you prefer a nonstop long-haul flight from Changi, look at Milan Malpensa, the intercontinental gateway. Milan Bergamo is another option for European routes, and the Milan city page shows all three airports together.
Milan is at its most comfortable in spring and in September and October, when café terraces fill up and walking through the city is a pleasure. July and August are hot, and many Milanese leave town around the Ferragosto holiday in mid-August, which makes the city quieter than usual. Winter is cold and occasionally foggy, though the festive lights and markets bring plenty of atmosphere.
For travellers from Singapore, demand peaks in the June and December school holidays and around Chinese New Year, while business travel to Linate is busiest on weekdays outside the summer break. Big events such as the fashion weeks and the furniture fair make seats and rooms harder to find. Check the price chart on this page and set a Price Alert to follow fares for your dates.
The M4 line brings you within walking distance of the cathedral square. Next to the Duomo, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is a glass-roofed arcade from the nineteenth century, lined with cafés and elegant shops, and a classic meeting point for visitors and locals alike.
Just north of San Babila, streets such as Via Montenapoleone and Via della Spiga form Milan's luxury fashion district. Even if you are only window shopping, the grand old palazzi and the displays are worth a slow walk.
Right beside Linate, this artificial lake is known as the sea of Milan. Its shores have walking and cycling paths, parkland and summer beaches, making it an easy escape if you have a few hours before a flight.
South of the city, this Cistercian abbey with its tall brick bell tower and quiet cloister feels far from urban Milan. It is a short trip from the eastern side of the city and a peaceful contrast to the busy centre.
Milan's modern skyline gathers around Piazza Gae Aulenti, with glass towers and the tree-covered residential towers of the Bosco Verticale. The nearby Isola district has independent shops and lively bars.
With the M4 line running from the terminal, the area around San Babila and the Duomo is a natural choice for visitors on a short trip. Porta Venezia, near the large public gardens, offers a lively mix of cafés and restaurants. Porta Romana and the streets towards the university suit travellers who want a local neighbourhood feel, while Città Studi and the eastern districts are close to the airport and quieter. Business visitors often choose the Porta Nuova area for its offices and good transport links.
A cross-cut veal shank slowly braised with wine and vegetables until the meat falls from the bone, traditionally finished with gremolata of lemon zest, garlic and parsley.
These Milanese meatballs were once a clever way to use leftover meat. Flattened, breaded and fried, they are often served as a snack with a drink in the early evening.
A hearty winter dish of pork cuts and Savoy cabbage, cooked slowly and usually eaten with polenta during the colder months.
Milan's famous sweet bread, rich with candied citrus and raisins, is found in almost every bakery in the run-up to Christmas and makes a popular gift to bring home.
