Chubu Centrair International Airport is the international gateway to Nagoya and the wider Chubu region of central Japan. Opened on a reclaimed island in Ise Bay, it replaced the old city airport for overseas flights and today links Aichi with destinations across Asia and beyond. For a traveller leaving Changi, this is almost certainly where your flights to Nagoya will land, and its compact layout, efficient rail link and relaxed atmosphere make it one of the gentler arrival experiences in Japan. Traveloka lets you compare routes into NGO, filter by stops and baggage, and keep your booking in one app.
The airport sits on its own artificial island off the coast of Tokoname, a pottery town on the Chita Peninsula south of Nagoya. A bridge carries the railway and expressway to the mainland, so the island never feels remote, and on clear days you can see across Ise Bay towards Mie.
Terminal 1 is the main building, with international and domestic check-in under one roof and a short walk between the two. A separate Terminal 2 has been used for some low-cost services, so check the terminal on your e-ticket. The Sky Town shopping and dining floor, an observation deck over the runway and the FLIGHT OF DREAMS aviation exhibit make the airport a pleasant place to spend a layover.
The Meitetsu line runs from the airport station, a few steps from arrivals, straight to Meitetsu Nagoya next to Nagoya Station; the limited express with reserved seating is the fastest option. Airport limousine buses reach other cities in Aichi and neighbouring prefectures. A high-speed ferry crosses Ise Bay to Tsu in Mie, handy for trips towards Ise. Taxis and car rentals are available, although driving into Nagoya is rarely necessary.
Nonstop flights between Singapore and Centrair have been offered in some seasons, so the first step is to switch on the Direct filter on Traveloka for your dates. When no nonstop option suits you, compare one-stop routes through other East Asian or Southeast Asian hubs by layover length and baggage rules. Domestic connections through Tokyo are also possible, but remember that Nagoya's other airport, Nagoya Airfield at Komaki, handles only a small number of regional domestic flights. For an overview of both options, see all flights to Nagoya.
Arrivals at Centrair peak around Japan's big holiday periods: Golden Week in early May, Obon in mid-August and the New Year break, when domestic terminals get especially busy. Singapore demand climbs in the June and December school holidays and around Chinese New Year. Spring blossom season from late March and the autumn foliage in November are the most popular times for sightseeing in the region.
Weather can affect flights too. The rainy season in June and early July brings grey days, and typhoons occasionally disrupt schedules between August and October, so travel insurance and a flexible plan help at that time. Winters are cold but usually clear. The price chart on this page shows how fares to Centrair tend to move across the year.
Just across the bridge from the airport, narrow lanes wind past kilns, brick chimneys and walls lined with clay pipes. It is an easy first or last stop on your trip.
The city's landmark castle, with golden roof ornaments and the restored Hommaru Palace, is an easy subway or bus ride from Nagoya Station.
Housed in an original red-brick textile mill near Nagoya Station, this museum traces the region's journey from weaving looms to car manufacturing.
Japan's most sacred Shinto shrine lies across the bay in Mie, reachable from the airport side by ferry and rail.
North of Nagoya, this is one of the few castles in Japan with its original keep, overlooking the Kiso River.
For early departures or late arrivals, the airport island itself and the town of Tokoname are the simplest choices. Most visitors, though, stay in Meieki around Nagoya Station, where the airport train arrives and the shinkansen departs. Sakae suits shopping and nightlife, and Kanayama, a stop on the airport line south of the centre, is a practical, lower-key alternative.
Small rice balls wrapped in nori around a piece of shrimp tempura, a light, portable snack perfect after a long flight.
Thick udon noodles simmered in a clay pot of hearty red miso broth, often with egg and chicken.
Thick toast spread with sweet red bean paste and butter, the star of Nagoya's generous morning coffee sets.
Chopped grilled eel over rice, enjoyed plain, with condiments and then with broth. It makes a fine first dinner in the city.
Landing at Centrair puts all of central Japan within easy reach. Compare flights to Nagoya on Traveloka, set a Price Alert for your dates and keep your e-ticket and hotel booking together in the app.
