About Osaka Itami Airport (ITM)

Itami was Osaka's main airport for decades before the offshore Kansai airport opened. Today it is a compact, efficient domestic hub favoured by business travellers because of how close it sits to the centre.

Location

The airport lies north-west of central Osaka on the border of Itami city in Hyogo Prefecture and Toyonaka in Osaka Prefecture. It is surrounded by residential suburbs, which is why night operations are restricted.

Terminals

Itami has one terminal building, remodelled in recent times into a central hall with a north wing and a south wing that serve different domestic airlines. Shops, restaurants and an observation deck overlooking the runways sit on the upper floors.

Getting from Itami into Osaka

Airport limousine buses are the simplest link, running to Osaka Station and Umeda, Namba, Shin-Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe. The Osaka Monorail stops at Osaka Airport Station and connects with the Hankyu line towards Umeda at Hotarugaike and, at Senri-Chuo, with the Kita-Osaka Kyuko line, which runs through onto the Midosuji subway. All flights at Itami are domestic, so a trip from Singapore that ends here means flying into another Japanese airport first and connecting. When to Fly to Osaka Itami

A forest trail from Minoh station follows a stream up to a tall waterfall. The walk is at its most striking when the maple trees turn red in autumn.

Takarazuka

A short train ride west of the airport, this riverside town is home to the famous all-female theatre troupe and a museum devoted to the creator of Astro Boy.

Where to Stay When Flying into Osaka Itami

Umeda is the natural base, with limousine buses from the terminal and trains to almost everywhere in Kansai. Shin-Osaka is ideal if a bullet-train journey is next on your list. Senri-Chuo and the Toyonaka area, both on the monorail, offer quieter streets near the airport, and Namba works if you prefer the nightlife and food scene of southern Osaka.

Osaka's version is not grilled squid on a stick but a thin, chewy pancake of batter and squid pressed flat on a hot iron, often with an egg, and sold from department-store food halls.

Doteyaki

Beef tendon simmered slowly in miso and mirin until tender, a rich, sweet bar snack found in standing counters around Shinsekai and Umeda.

Kasu Udon
